I'm posting in this topic as you ladies will hopefully take 2 minutes to sign this!

In opposition, the Tories promised to recruit 3000 extra midwives. They have failed to honour this now they are in (coalition) government.

There is now an e-petition for an extra 5000 midwives. If e-petitioning worked for fuel prices surely it's worth a shot! Thank you all :)

To find out what the birth to midwife ratio is in your area, take a look at this map

Thank you :)

PS: I am not posting this with the intention of frightening anyone. Safe birth should not be a postcode lottery - and it's important that MP's and ministers understand that we do all notice when they fail to deliver on pledges as important as this.

p.s. In my area I was annoyed that despite being told how brilliant home births were, at 8 months I was suddenly informed that it was 50/50 weather or not they'd be enough midwives on shift to make it happen. I was so upset. As it turns out I need to be induced anyway, but otherwise it would have been months of one plan being taken away due to numbers, not medical needs.

Thankyou for bringing this up again - the more times it comes up the more likely it is that enough signatures will be collected to force the government to give it time :)

Just to clarify a point that came up on previous threads, this petition does not ask the government to train 5,000 additional MWs - we're currently in the ludicrous situation that newly trained MWs cannot get jobs (as PCT's want experience) and too many experienced MWs are leaving the NHS, and sometimes the country, because of the pressure of working under current conditions.

My understanding is that the UK has plenty of MWs - they're just not currently employed. And mothers and babies lives are being put at risk in consequence :(.
