Food Poisoning/Stomach Bug at 35 weeks

I'm a bit nervous of googling this as scared of what I might come across but have been really ill today and it feels like when I had food poisoning a while ago..

I know this can cause big problems in the first trimester but wasn't sure if there was a risk to my baby at this late stage?

It might also just be a bug as DD wasn't well over the weekend and I might have picked that up...

Anything anyone can say to reassure me or tell me to go see my midwife if you think I need to - would be really welcome... TIA.

Keep your fluids up. Keep an eye on your temp - any fever or pain or bleeding? Also on baby's movements.

I'd give the MW a ring anyway to rest your mind.

Thanks Iggly - am drinking lots although can't face any food although am sure I have enough in storage for a couple of days if need be Blush...

No fever although a couple of stomach cramps but that's it... baby is moving like normal, quite a feisty soul which I am thankful for as that's the thing I've been really aware of and thought would highlight any problems...

Thanks again!

How are you feeling now? Just wanted to pass on my sympathies. I'm 27 weeks and have been hit with a stomach bug today. I think it has to be a bug as not eaten anything today that could cause food poisoning but been vomiting twice an hour since about 5pm. Miserable, isn't it?!

I'm in a hotel away from home with work too Sad.

I'm struggling to keep water down but only been a few hours os if not better by am, I think I'll tell my OH and ask him to drive here or will consider who else I can contact here if I can't get fluid in.

Happened to me at 32 weeks and also couldn't keep water down.

Called MW and on their advice went in for a quick once over. They gave me an injection to stop the nausea (was great!) and then decided that I was a little dehydrated and put me on a drip. It wasn't a drama but it did really help and dehydration at this stage is something to watch for.

If you're being stoic because of work, don't be. I don't want to alarm you because, as you say, the baby is moving etc etc, but it will take longer than normal to recover from something like this so I would try and speak to someone sooner rather than later.

Am 32 weeks, had similar over weekend. I didnt call mw as vomiting stopped in 24hrs. But has left me feeling v washed out. I had a look on tinternet and what I read said it was only a risk if you get into a bad star yourself with dehydration or temperature etc. The actual bug isn't usually a problem for baby.

Sorry for hijacking this threqd with my own bug but been reassuring to read the responses and know to keep an eye on things and dehydration.

Thanks for letting me share the advice - can be difficult to know what to do when it's violent vomiting as feels really strong in the abdomen but lots of movement still going on.

How are you skillbo?

ITryToBeZenBut have you tried ice instead of water? just let melt slowly in your mouth.

HugosGoatee · 16/11/2011 11:54

I had similar at 33 weeks, ate from salad bar at work Hmm and up all night puking and diarhoheaa. (have given up trying to spell that correctly and iPhone not helping!)

Midwife wasn't at all concerned - just warned me against salad bars! Your immune system is lowered during pregnancy so you're more likely to pick up bugs. Have a couple of days in bed, drink water and eat dry toast or whatever you can keep down. It's likely only to be a problem if you get dehydrated or start losing weight.

ITryToBeZenBut · 16/11/2011 18:41

Thanks. MiauMau - hotel bringing me some ice now. They're very lovely. Smile

You're welcome :) Hope it helps! Food wise, if you can stomach it of course, you should only eat "white food" like boiled rice, bread, a very simple chicken soup, bananas. But, absolutely no milk, apples or any citrus fruit, the acid from those will just make you feel worse.
