SPD sufferers - when did you finish work?

SPD is getting worse andI could cry with it. Painkillers work short term, crutches are ok but impractical with a 3 year old, belt is useless.
18 weeks to go and trying to work out when would be best to finish work to rest as even driving is killing me now.
Didn't want to start mat leave 11 weeks before as wanted more time off at the end with the baby.

helsi why is work worse than being at home?

being at home is much worse for mine! (3 year old to pick up, 6 year old to cuddle, housework to do etc)

helsi · 03/01/2006 16:59

because I am on my own and don't need to move about.

I struggled and worked up to 3 weeks before due date. I really ought to have gone off earlier though. I was daft to struggle on like i did.

Enid · 03/01/2006 17:10

I wouldn't take the co codamol

you have to try and beat this with physio

you are going to have to go back to work after a week and I presume won't be able to take the pills then (do they make you drowsy?)

helsi · 03/01/2006 17:32

I have to go back to dr for sick note next week if needed. he wants me to take the week off as he does not advise me driving at the moment and this is my only way to work as its outside in the sticks!

helsi you are going to have to start your maternity leave early I think

sorry to be brutal but the spd is unlikely to get any better

bossykate · 03/01/2006 20:23

helsi, presumably you have childcare when you're at work? so if you're off sick you will still have the childcare? ergo you will have the opportunity to rest at home on your sick days - at least until it's time to pick up your lo? pace enid, i would absolutely not start your mat leave early - get a sick note instead. you will be paid and can (i assume) maintain your childcare - giving you the holy grail of child free/work free time in order to rest.

enid is right - this will not get any better. i had a relatively mild case of spd with dd - it was misery. physio helped to stabilise the condition (i think without it i would have had a much worse time) - but the real palliative was rest and as much of it as possible.

good luck and hth.

ps enid - the thing to remember with swimming is absolutely no breast stroke - i.e. no legs apart kicking motions - but imho any physical exertion just makes it much worse. i couldn't even do my pg yoga class, fhs!

I agree with bossykate, get signed off sick, keep using your childcare and rest as much as you can. I spent time in hospital with raised bp with ds2 and having a few days rest made so much difference to my spd. Don't let work bully you into starting mat leave early, if dr will sign you off then do it.

Enid · 04/01/2006 10:15

PS bk I tried to remember about the 'breaststroke legs' being a no-no but it is so hard to do breaststroke arms and kicky legs, I kept lapsing!

Well I struggled in today and have booked mat leave to start 11.4.06 - 4 weeks before due date. I have also asked for 3 weeks leave at the end of it so I will return to work on Monday 31st October 2006. haven't told them what working pattern I would like to do yet!

Helsi - glad you seem to have sorted it out.
I was signed off sick at 16 weeks but my mat leave does not kick in until 37 weeks. You definately need the rest so pleased you have managed to organise everything.

helsi · 08/01/2006 18:03

I struggled through last week. am at doctors again on wednesday morning. am going to go in Monday & Tuesday as have a big meeting to chair ut after the doctors on wednesday I am going to try and push for an earlier finish (on sick of course) as I am really in quite a bit of pain now.

With my last pregnancy I left work when I was 38.5 weeks! Had him one week later. Tbh the pain was terrible wherever I was so I figured that I might as well keep going and have more time with baby afterwards. It was such a relief after the birth when the pain vanished as quickly as it had arrived (at 12 weeks). Hope yours does too.

loopyredangel · 09/01/2006 23:14

I had to leave work esrly, at 7 weeks before due date, should have left alot sooner but I was stubborn! Ended up on crutches and in a chair, went to a pain clinic, was given co-codamol and paracetamo, was fine taking them, had a beautiful baby boy weighed 10lb 9.5oz tablets had no effect! They just took the edge of the pain a little, was also prescribed dihydracodeine but wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. DS is now 18 weeks and I am still having problems with SPD!!!

helsi · 09/01/2006 23:21

Loopyredangel - I make no wonder with a 10lb 9.5oz baby - my that's a healthy one! sorry but phew!! well done you.

Hi helsi
I did need an emergency C-section! He is now 18 weeks and just over 17lb with a cute double chin!

jofeb04 · 10/01/2006 20:16

loppy,
I had the spd since 18wkks, still suffering 15weeks later. Ive been having physio and am being sent for an xray. Also using loads of tablets, and tens machine. Give it a go, and talk to the doctor.

Hi,
I have SPD had it at 34wks with my daughter.
Couldn't walk ended up on crutches. Never really got over it, always made worse if I'd been out shopping or just walkin for more than 1hr anyway pregnant again with number 4 (oops!). At 12wks couldn't walk again so decided to try antenatal Yoga and it really worked the pain has gone although it comes back if I miss more than 4 days. I just wished I had done this sooner. Try it, it does work but do remember do not push yourself only do what you can.
