I would like to know how late into your pregnancy you could still fit behind the wheel of a car Blush

Getting really worried about this - didn't drive in my last pregnancy so not sure about this. However, I couldn't walk very far at all in the last few weeks either. And this time, I don't have the option of staying at home as I have a child to get to school - over a mile away. There and back twice a day is four miles a day [worried]

hi,
i'm 4'10'' with (as described by my mw) a huge bump not to be grown any more at 37 weeks and i can just still drive. do feel like i'm stretching my toes to change gear but its ok. my bump does rub against the steering wheel though but i'm not going more than 10 mins really now.

Thanks that is helpful. I'm just 5'1" and don't have especially short legs for a short person. Last baby was 8lbs 6oz and the bump was EPIC. I an assuming this one will also be a whopper.

Hi,
I'm 4'11" and 36+4 - and have measured 3-4 weeks ahead since 28 weeks. I'm still driving but it is uncomfortable. I can't have my seat quite as far forward as I'd like and my bump is squashed up against the steering wheel, but I just have to put up with it - it's a rural area and I have to take my wee boy to nursery and my DH to work. I drove up to 40w+ last time but I wasn't as big as I am this time. I just hope I don't go too overdue, DS2 was 9 days late, I will be massive if I get that far!

Oeisha · 14/11/2011 12:05

Depends on the car, but some have a moveable steering column (i.e. you can move it up) . I'm 5'3 and will probably have to do this...
Just check your manual...or check out the specs online!

ButHeNeverDid · 14/11/2011 12:12

I am 5'2" and had twins ..... and could always fit behind the wheel

kickingking · 14/11/2011 12:27

Thanks this is very reassuring! I don't think my steering column does adjust, but I'm more hopeful I'll be able to keep driving Smile

I'm 4'11'' and 36w and the steering wheel has been brushing my bump for the past two weeks. I wouldn't want to be doing any motorway driving as even the slightest accident would hurt the baby a lot but I'm reasonably happy to do short town driving.

With my first, when I was carrying a stone more than I am this time, I stopped driving around 36 weeks because I just couldn't squeeze in anymore.

2wwmadness · 14/11/2011 14:20

In 15 weeks and 5"2 but already very big! I was size 8 when I got pregnant but my bump is really big already. I'm a bit scared! My back is beginning to hurt already. I work in retail, on my feet (heels) all day. I want to work as long as I can and was planning on working until 35 weeks. Am I deluded?!?

Iggly · 14/11/2011 14:22

2ww ditch the heels for a start. Also try yoga - it'll help with posture and back pain too.

welliesandpyjamas · 14/11/2011 14:23

5'2", comically enermous bump with DS2, and still just about fitted behind the wheel at the end. When needs must etc etc.

youtalkintome · 14/11/2011 14:24

I am 5'1 and have a 46 inch round the middle bump Blush. I am still able to get in the car at 38 weeks pregnant although i am starting to feel my driving is getting a little dangerous. I can't lean forward to look to my left at junctions and reversed into a low wall the other day as i don't have a great view behind me, probably time to stop but i have to get from the kids from school and it's a 20minute drive.

Iscreamtea · 14/11/2011 14:38

It depends on the car. I'm 4'11" and in my 1st pg stopped driving at 36 weeks because I didn't fit. In my 2nd pg I was too ill to drive the last couple of months.3rd pg I had a bump that was enormous (turned out to be mostly water). I stopped fitting in my car at about 34 weeks. I started driving dh's which was snug but ok then we sold that and got a new car which was absolutely fine.

kickingking · 14/11/2011 14:41

youtalkintome this is what I'm worried about - i live somewhere very hilly so quite often you have to lean forwards to look left while on a 45* or more slope. You can't even get in my road without doing that actually Confused

I'm 5'1" and was enormous when pregnant with DC1. I drive with the seat as far forward as possible, and I also sit quite upright. I could drive for my whole pregnancy with DC1 and I am hoping to this time round too. I don't think long journeys would be very comfortable, but it was fine to nip here and there.

youtalkintome · 14/11/2011 14:48

I have reduced my need to drive by going on mat leave at 35 weeks and only going out to collect the dc from school, dh takes them other than that i'm pretty much housebound unless i can walk somewhere. I was fine until 35 weeks. I would just say accept as much help as possible my MIL has offered to get the kids 1 day a week, DH is now collecting them 2 days and i just have to do the other 2. so not too bad really.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 14/11/2011 14:50

5ft 2 and big bump here. And short bloody legs as well Angry. It's getting more difficult but I keep reclining the seat a little and it's ok so far. I need longer arms now though!
