Too fat for a decent scan @ 23 weeks - so ashamed

I'm so ashamed - just been for a follow up anomally scan (the baby was lying in the wrong position at 20 weeks for them to check the heart properly) and the sonogropher really struggled to get a decent image because of my BMI - not sure exactly what it is but I'm 5'3 and a size 16. I was so embarassed I could have cried - anyone else had trouble with scans? Got to try to keep my weight under control!! :(

Well said McQueasy :-)

Happened to me too last week. I'm a size 16-18. It may or may not have been anything to do with my BMI - I was a size 8 in my first pregnancy and they struggled to get a good picture from the position the baby was in.

But why feel ashamed? I honestly don't. I'm the size that I am. It's not a reflection on character, it's a physical fact.

I have a long history of Eating Disorders and was hospitalised during my first pregnancy. You know what? I'm far healthier now, physically and mentally, and in a much better position to set a healthy example to my children. My current weight isn't ideal but it's an improvement and I'm healthier overall. Don't let anyone make you feel ashamed, you've done nothing wrong, even if you were the size of a house.

When I went for my 12 week scan, the sonographer couldn't get the baby in a good position, and when I checked my notes later, she's basically said it was because I'm too fat (size 12 before I got pregnant, 5'3''). We had to go private to get the nuchal measurements, I mentioned to the consultant about what she'd said and he said she was talking bollocks, and less experienced/good sonographers often say that if they just can't get it right so it doesn't reflect badly on them. he had no problems at all getting lovely pictures.

I am a size 22. At my 20 week scan, it was all pretty clear. I actually asked the (lovely) sonographer if weight affected scan clarity and she said that it depends where a lady carries her weight. I was ok because I've always had fat thighs and a big butt rather than a big stomach. She also said that it can be easier on ladies with a bit of give, so to speak because they can push in harder. With very slender women with toned, tight tummies, it can be equally as hard, I think. It also depends on which way baby is lying too so lots of variables can affect scan quality. Please don't feel bad xxx

I am big, I just have an internal scan. Much easier.

I had to be rescanned at 20 weeks because my son was in a crap position and I’m fairly skinny, skinny enough to see movements through my skin at 14 weeks...I hope you don’t feel bad op :(

twistedpink · 09/02/2018 15:47

I'm a size 16 and carry my weight on my tummy, the woman had no problem scanning me. But I would have died at her comments! What's a b*tch. Don't let her make you feel sad and ruin the experience for you.... even though that's clearly what she has done... I would have felt the same as you. But your not alone girl. I hope her arm hurts for days too! Karmas a both! Xoxo

A size 16 is hardly extreme! You are pretty average in the uk. The sonography has no right to make you feel bad. I have my 20 week scan next week and have e been told that it could take awhile due to the position of the baby. There is every reason that this is why they didn’t get a good snap not your weight. Please don’t feel.

Now is not the time to loose or worry a oboist weight. When your baby comes you can look at ways to bring it down if YOU choose to. In the mean time enjoy your pregnancy. Good luck x

Given that the OP was pregnant back in 2011 I’m pretty sure she’s bed. Able to move on from this

I’m the same height & a size 18. They had trouble at my 12 week scan & put on my notes due to Maternal Build (all my weight carries in my lower abdomen & hips which I thought may have affected it)! It affected the scan so much they had to do an internal scan on me just to get a good picture.
