Mystery SEVERE back/hip/abdo pain at 9 weeks, m/c ruled out. WHAT is IT?

I had severe, severe back/hip/abdominal pain yesterday, so severe I ended up attending A and E. When I got there, I literally couldn't stand up or even sit with the pain, I had to go on all fours, it was the only relief I could get and it wasn't really relief.. had that pacey thing like you get in labour too.

Anyway, they worried missed ectopic because of how I was presenting and they gave me an IV drip. After about an hour, the pain more or less subsided (had had it about 8-10 hours at that stage, getting worse all the time until it went).

I suspect it was positioning myself and the drugs that helped it go away... it was most severe after the journey from home to the hospital. Getting dressed was agony, I could barely get into the car, I was just in SO much pain. Have never experienced ANYTHING like it, I did labour to 5cm before epi and had a very difficult delivery last time, took nine months to recover, but this topped all of that easily.

Had scan and baby was fine and in right place etc, so what in God's earth caused this? They sent me home after scan and of course I was very relieved and happy that I wasn't miscarrying, but I am a bit worried as to what was going on. Has anyone any experience of this type of pain???

Hi Working, what side was the pain ? Did they test to rule out kidney infection, gall stones or apendicitus (spell?). If you are still in serious pain you should go back and demand more tests. Good Luck xx

What side was the pain

StoneBaby · 10/11/2011 11:24

Could it be some kind of kidney infection? ITU?

I never had such a pain but when I have ITU, all my lower back hurts.

working9while5 · 10/11/2011 11:54

It wasn't really any side per se. It was pretty much my whole middle section, if I had to localise it I would say it was almost like in my hip joints/spine.. The pain has mainly gone away today thank God.

I don't know much about things like appendicitis/gallstones.. they took bloods alright, and tested my urine.

They were very sure it was gynaecological pain because of how I was acting, being on all fours and apparently how I was moving.. they said I could be spotted a mile off (!!!). Scan didn't show anything untoward though. I wondered if it could relate to my previous birth somehow as it felt so like that (only worse!), though not sure how it would.. would it be possible to have a birth injury that could be triggered by the womb getting bigger? Ds was a deep tranverse arrest and then a Kielland's delivery, all a bit hectic.

Hi,

It sounds as though you could have a Urinanry Tract Infection my DP and I were in A&E 2 nights ago and I had the same symptons.

RosalindFranklinsNobelPrize · 10/11/2011 12:38

Go to a & e if you get the pain. My appendicitis felt the same as period pain

CrackersandCheese · 10/11/2011 13:18

Could it be really bad constipation?

My other guess would have been UTI but you said they tested your pee.

Has the pain gone now though?

working9while5 · 11/11/2011 10:10

Went yesterday, came back again last night but not as severe. It's not constipation, it's not that kind of pain for a start. Can constipation be as severe as labour? I know I had it after ds and it was horrendous but I never doubted it was constipation!!

Could be a grumbling appendix. Id go and see your Gp.

pregnantmimi · 11/11/2011 10:36

I dont know get it cheacked out for something more serious just I remember being the same at your stage and had to crawl out of bed had such bad dragging down pains in back hips tummy and couldnt straighten up my tummy and back. x

notcitrus · 11/11/2011 10:53

Could be a bit of a tummy bug mixed with pelvic girdle pain thanks to pregnancy hormones?
I had something similar at 8 weeks, got a GP to visit for the first time in my life, SPD pain worse than at 8 months last time (when I was using a wheelchair as couldn't walk from the pain) - and then once the really minor tummy bug calmed down it got better.
Still had SPD-type pain but now at 25 weeks it's actually got better over the last couple months rather than worse, so I'm much better than I was in my last pregnancy.

And IME constipation really can be worse than labour!

Oeisha · 11/11/2011 10:57

Constipation can be unbelievably painful. Think a solid ever-expanging balloon in your abdo, eventually it pushes against something that doesn't like it - though not usually that painful as it's usually spotted earlier than this and is treated IYSWIM.
Did they look into PGP/SPD? If one of those fits, get to your MW and get a physio referal.
I have something intermittent going on it there, that I put down to IBS pains, but not constipation. Pain doesn't bother me that much, mainly because between severe period pain and refractory migraines I've learned to dose and cope. BUT this pain does peak at around a 7-8/10 when asked. When LO lies awkwardly, this seems to be the trigger, and like you, mostly I find adopting a particular position (can vary) helps a lot, though not for my last attack, that went off then LO moved. It could just be 'growing pains', but every time I have my appendix poked, bloods taken to rule pancreatitis, and everythign checked in case I'm in premature labour...
Basically, if it IS intermittent, and they don't really know what it is, then it might go on and on throughout pregnancy, or it might not. I'm thinking of getting a tent in my local hospital's carpark and jsut staying there for the last 10 weeks...

working9while5 · 11/11/2011 11:15

My money is on it being more mechanical to be honest.. it's not really a dragging pain, it's more spasmy/acute, and closest thing I can compare it to is my back-to-back labour. I think my pain threshold is decent enough, also have classic migraine and have had serious back trouble in the past. Anyway, haven't had any poo trouble to indicate it could be, going regularly Blush. When I went to A and E it was literally like it was ripping me in two.
Going to try to sort out physio referral to rule out this next, maybe it is SPD/PGP which is exacerbated by my existing scoliosis.

Hi, just a thought but does it hurt when you press your ribs? You sound exactly like me when I'm having a costochondritis flare up. They thought I was appendicitis, various ovarian complications, gallbladder inflammation, and so on and so on because I was getting pain that was radiating out. Costochondritis affects your back too and can send all your muscles into spasm. It is bloody difficult to get a diagnosis though because it doesn't show up on any tests. Pregnancy causes flare ups and can put you in A&E. The way you are describing it hurting when you get dressed or travel in a car make me think that too.
Hope you feel better soon!

working9while5 · 11/11/2011 12:15

No, I had costo last time! I remember the pain well! They too thought I had gallbladder issues etc, even liver problems! It was around my right rib and started later in pregnancy. This is much, much lower, nothing higher or even central.

I am a crock.

Ooh never met a fellow costo sufferer before! Nice to meet you! Hope it doesn't flare up for you again during this pregnancy.

Hmm...I'd keep on at your GP. Sounds like it could be the start of SPD though.
Feel better soon!

A remote possibility is fibroid degeneration, but that would usually have been picked up on a scan unless they weren't looking for it or fibroid was too small/in awkward postion, & it usually occurs a bit later on in pregnancy. It does go away on it's own after a few hours - 72hours. It doesn't necessarily cause pain in the area of the fibroid but can can pain at a referred site. Did they mention it at all? i had it & they went thru everything else possible first depsite knowing I had fibroids, prob cos there is nothing they can do for it. i was vomiting with the pain when I had it - I was strangely impressed that something could be that painful.
