Paracetamol which sucks. I feel for you because I've been there.

Inhaling steam with olbas oil is allowed and while it certainly isn't a handful of sudafed I found it surprisingly effective.

JambalayaCodfishPie · 09/11/2011 21:14

Thanks, I've got the olbas tissues, which are effective for about 3 seconds after blowing my nose.

Will try the steam.... And maybe a bit more feeling sorry for myself too. :(

Karvol vapouriser is excellent, drink honey and lemon, if I am really bad I put vaporub on near my nose also douse pillows and clothing with Olbas oil. Keep your fluids up and boost your Vit C. If you are really poorly take the day off if you work, and rest, you need to take care of yourself.

You can have some lovely paracetamol.

Try some Olbas Oil on a pillow case and take it to bed.

You can't have decongestants so wave buh-bye to the good stuff (erm Lemsip).

Boil up some lemons and honey and just drink some vitamin C :)

Oh and rest.

Graciescotland · 09/11/2011 21:51

Boots do an own brand hot drink which is just lemon and paracetamol which you can have, add some honey and it's quite nice in a fake lemsip sort of way

MissRee · 09/11/2011 22:10

Lots of hot Ribena - the heat gets things shifting snot/mucous wise and it's full of vitamin c! The sugar will also give you a bit of a pick-me-up!

Drink a tonne of water, rest more than normal and anticipate a longer recovery ( don't want to scare you just don't try and push through).

Steamy warm showers with olbas oil dropped into the bath.

I didn't drink that much coffee so a cup of filter coffee and a couple of paracetamol gives you a temporary boost!

I suggest washing your nose with some salty boiled water ( obviously your body temperature). This helps just a lot. I at first found the idea repulsive and twisted but now I can swear by it. You can get in pharmacy special plastic bottle that comes with some salt to dilute or there is also some spray with sea water.
Get well soon.

I have to confess for the couple of days that I felt like that out of a whole 9 months of following the rules - I had a hot bath followed by a large glass of sloe gin and then bed. Slept like a log and it did me the world of good ... but it depends on how much that would bother you

I had a minging cold thing a few weeks ago. Think it was the change in weather. Out here (am currently in the US), my doc advises we can take tylenol PM which is paracetamol and Diphenhydramine ( a type of anti-histamine). So, it didn't cure my cold but it knocked me out for a few hours! Also used the old-school head over a steaming bowl of water and towel trick. And a great deal of moaning and whinging to DH....

JambalayaCodfishPie · 10/11/2011 07:11

Aww, you lovely lot, thank you all for your ideas.

Have been up all night so will be taking the day off today. I shall rest and drink honey and lemon.

Thanks again! :)

I spoke to a herbalist who said it's safe to take echinacea, which has helped keep a few of my colds at bay

PlinkertyPlonk · 10/11/2011 10:02

I've had a stinking cold since Monday (I'm 19wks) and have taken the day off to recover, having just spent 2 days (pre-booked) holiday mostly asleep. Sad MW said I could take paracetamol (but no sudafed/decongestants or cold remedies that have anything other than paracetamol), honey & lemon, and throat sweets, and to rest.

bmm39 · 11/11/2011 15:43

I feel for you. I am 25 weeks pregnant and I too am a snot machine. I had an annoying cough for 7 weeks that turned out to be a chest infection and now I have a stinking cold. I take paracetamol, eat lots of oranges, hot ribenna, honey and lemon drinks, throat sweets etc... (everything that everyone else has said). It won't go as quickly as normal because your little baby is zapping your immune system. Plus, get plently of rest. I had the oppinion of 'No, I will plough on'. Its rubbish get as much rest as you can. xxxx

PlinkertyPlonk · 11/11/2011 16:07

A fresh packet of tissues coming your way, bmm!

I can vouch for rest - spent most of yesterday asleep too and am feeling heaps better today, although still snotty. I am just very grateful that I can take the time off and don't have children to look after. How the hell does anyone who has to look after under-5's at the same time cope? Confused Hats off to them.
