Movements more sluggish at 30 weeks

Morning all :)

I'm currently 30+2 with DC1 and just wanted a bit of reassurance. His movements are definitely still there, just felt a nudge as I was typing, however they don't seem as frantic as they were a couple of weeks ago.

I've been told every time I've been measured and at my 20 week scan that he is measuring 'rather large' for his gestational age, could it be that he is simply running out of room in there? To be honest I don't really feel kicks so much any more as wriggles and shuffling. Is this normal?

if you are not sure hun then ring your midwife, any change in movement should be looked at. Its probably nothing but best to be on the safe side.

I was thinking that but didn't want to bother the midwife with something that could be perfectly normal. I have a GP appointment for tomorrow morning so I will mention it then and see what they say.

you are never bothering the midwife hun thats what they are there for. Give her a ring and if you cant get through then ring the other numbers she should have given you when you booked in.

I'm 30w too with DC1 and my movements have definitely changed in the same way you are describing. I haven't felt anything that you could actually call a 'kick' for a few weeks now, but there is plenty of wriggling and shifting position instead. When I rest my hand on my belly, or sit a bit too close to a table so it rests against my bump, I can actually feel that she is moving yet I'm not really feeling it internally, if that makes any sense?

I'll admit I've worried a little about it but she just seems to have active days and sleepy days, and sometimes its nothing more than a few sleepy days in a row that gets me a little concerned. But I've just assumed that it is because she is starting to run out of room (certainly compared to the room she had a month ago!) and also that she is just a wriggler instead of a kicker.

I'd be interested to hear what your GP says though!

All changed in movement should be checked. Phone your midwife and ask for her advice, and maybe have a look at the countthekicks website. You can print out a monitoring sheet so that you can count the times he moves. Sometimes when you write it down you realise that he is actually quite active after all.

I'm not questioning the advice here (especially as its my first) but surely babies do move differently as the pregnancy progresses and they have different amounts of room?

lucidlady · 09/11/2011 12:48

Movements do change but you should always be able to count a minimum of 10 movements in any one period of time - I think the current Nhs guideline is 10 movements in 12 hours but personally I always looked for 10 movements in a 1 - 2 hour period. Have you tried having a cold fizzy drink and seeing if movements increase? Please don't worry in silence - call your midwife - better to be making a fuss about something that turns out to be nothing than suffering a tragedy.

MmeLindor. · 09/11/2011 12:50

Bella
Yes, the movements do change a bit in that there is obviously less space for the tumbling around, but if they change in frequency then you should get it checked out.

Karmanna · 09/11/2011 12:54

I'm 30w + 2 too!! I've actually never felt my baby kick - he just wriggles and moes around a lot. He does seem to sleep a lot, but if I've not felt him for a while I normally eat or drink something sweet, and that normally get's him going - he;s gonna have a sweet tooth I think. He's started sensing sweets even before I've eaten any - he's start wriggling if I open a bag of maltesers! :o

BartletForAmerica · 09/11/2011 12:56

If movements change, better to speak to a midwife and 'waste their time' when all is well (although they will never say it is a waste of time, but I know how it feels when you feel like you are pestering them), than not speak to one and miss something significant.

imip · 09/11/2011 20:45

Sometimes a glass of cold orange juice will make a baby move, but really, just contact your midwife.

LivingDead · 09/11/2011 20:55

I would go and get checked out tbh. I don't know about anyone else but I got vigorous movement throughout pregnancy, as in lumps and bumps poking out all over, I did have a lot of fluid though so maybe more room.

dilkam · 10/11/2011 12:35

Its worth checking it out as its obviously worrying you which isnt good for you or bump. Movement does get less erratic as they run out of room but if in doubt get checked out just for your peace of mind xx

kiki22 · 10/11/2011 18:01

i'm 29 weeks and i don't have many kicks anymore either i tried the count the kicks but there doesn't seem to be any pattern in his movement no 2 days are the same, today he has been moving loads and loads with big movements that make my belly move but yesterday not much at all only every few hours nothing visible. I've just decided he dances to his own tune and dont worry unless it goes more than a few hours i do give him a good poke at times tho Shock
