Which blood tests at 28 weeks?

Hi does anyone have a note of which blood tests you get at 28-weeks?
Anaemia and anything else...? I'm Rh Negative, and due the anti-D soon, do they check for antibodies at this stage too?

No reply from midwife number (as usual Smile) and I need to get them done at GP clinic tomorrow, and they've already said they don't know which ones are compulsory.

None are compulsory - they're all optional!

My pregnancy notes book says 2 weeks is Antibodies and full blood count.

i had mine done at 24 weeks because my midwife thought i was 28 wks, she said i would prob have to get them done again. but i dont?

Flisspaps · 08/11/2011 11:48

samwellsbutt You don't have to have any of the blood tests done. As with all procedures, they are offered to you but not compulsory.

If you are being told that you have to have them done, then you're being misinformed. Of course, they can be useful if you believe that you don't have a particular antibody or immunity to something, or if you are believed to have a low iron count etc - but it is up to you whether or not you choose to have them done.

Crosshair · 08/11/2011 11:48

They took two tubes, I think one was for anaemia and the other for anti bodies but I might of just made that up. Shock My memory is terrible!

Enraha · 08/11/2011 11:55

I just want to get the normal/ recommended ones done, am aware of my rights etc and choose to have them done.

Sorry for any misleading language, if that's caused confusion.

So the candidates are: anaemia, full blood count and Rh neg antibodies.

If anyone can remember what they've had recently at 28 week mark, that would be helpful Smile

I don't think it's your job to remember - they should know when taking them at the clinic Hmm

MrsIcarus · 08/11/2011 12:11

I had my 28 week bloods done yesterday. They did full blood count (which checks for anaemia), random glucose and blood type/antibodies.

Enraha · 08/11/2011 12:31

Great - thanks. My normal midwife is not very skilful at taking bloods and left me with a corking bruise on the last 2 occasions, so a trip to the lovely GP, armed with this info, will be preferable.

They test your HB for iron levels, and they will definitely test your antibodies as you're rh-negative. These are the only 2 things they tested for at my 28 weeks appointment.

They will also give you one big jab for the anti-D.

My midwife is like that - terrible with the needles. best blood test ever was done by a special blood taker (can't remember his job title) and I didn't feel a thing!!! I was Shock

kiki22 · 08/11/2011 17:57

I had my 28 weeks last week and got antibodies and iron

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 08/11/2011 18:10

Iggly- Phlebotomist, I ma needlephobic and can't have them taken by the Phlebotomist anymore :(

Full blood count and something else iirc btw

mrsrvc · 08/11/2011 18:35

Had mine today: full blood count, blood group and random blood sugar. Hope that helps.

Iggly · 08/11/2011 19:51

Thanks Purple and why not?!

MiauMau · 08/11/2011 20:12

Iggly the same happened to me with the midwife in my first appointment. She said that taking blood from me was like taking blood from a rock, she nearly started crying after she poked me in the wrist and I barely bled and made me go to Phlebotomy the following day at 7.30am. A male nurse there saved my life from a lot of subsequent poking by telling me the precise location of a good vein so that I should tell this to all the nurses and midwives I also have to tell them to be patient :)
It works a treat!

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 08/11/2011 21:08

They have decided that blood has to be taken on the premises/maternity unit so I can't go right next door and have it taken by the Phlebotomist. Unless, I travel 20 miles to another hospital where I can have it taken there. Hmm

Iggly · 08/11/2011 21:35

Hmm that is just a little bit ridiculous!!

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 09/11/2011 15:45

I went to the GP today and mentioned it to him and he said it was Bullshit. Which has amused me no end my Doc swearing like that! If they say that again, then I am to get them to ring him straight away apparently. :o :o
