quick question about the nuchal test and blood test

Hi. can any one please advise of what info you get and when? I have my 12 week scan later this week and I have opted for the downs syndrome screening test. I know they take a neck measurement (?) during the scan - do they give the risk figure for this part straight after the scan? and do they explain what the figures mean? ie what is high risk and what is low risk ? and how long do you usually wait for blood test results?

sorry for all the questions, but for some reason this is on my mind and I don't want the excitement of my scan to be overshadowed by confusion and some numbers I don't know what mean. I want to understand that they are telling me.

I had mine a couple of weeks ago and the sonographer said that a measurement of the nuchal fold (ie how much fluid is behind the neck) under 3.5mm is considered normal (mine was 1.6) (although I think this has increased since I had Ds as remember being told differently then). They told me the measurement at the scan and I then had bloods taken and was told that I would be called within a couple of days if the combined result was high risk but if it was low risk I'd get a letter in a couple of weeks. Had the letter at weekend and overall
risk was 1 in 11000 which is low so I'm relieved as had been a bit worried before.

From my experience you often have to ask if you want the information (ie what the measurement is and if it's in the 'normal'
Ie low risk range)

Hope all goes well

Same as above, they told me that if there was a problem they'd ring within 3 days, if not a letter within 2 weeks - they can't give you an instant result becUse it takes into account the blood tests which need to be looked at.

Hi my neuchal fold measurement was entered into some computer programme with the results of a blood test to generate a overall probability - which was then sent to me in a letter. So not discussed at the scan for me.

at my scan they didnt tell me but if you watch the monitor when they measure the fold a little line comes up with the measurement next to it so keep your eyes peeled.

I got the letter about 10 days after with the figure on and whether it was classed as high or low risk

Hope it all goes well for you
