Clary sage for kick-starting labour?

Anyone used this essential oil with any success? I bought some today (yes, yes, am only 38 weeks, but because I have gestational diabetes they're muttering about not letting me go longer than 40 weeks at the absolute maximum and I'd rather start myself off more naturally than with a pessary or drip).

I also know that babies don't come unless they're ready

So...clary sage...what did you do with it? Drops in the bath, rubbed into bump (in a carrier oil), burnt, sniffed?

hi i tried clary sage and didnt get anywhere at the time but do keep using it aswell as raspberry leaf tabs and primrose oil and even if this does not work straight away it may make your baby come a few days early. (i will warn you that the constant smell of clary sage may make you feel quite sick)

hunkermunker · 31/12/2005 21:33

Hmm, yes, I wish it smelt nicer - lol!

also try a warm bath early morning and late night

Any essential oil will work by entering your blood stream. A massage (using a suitable carrier oil) will be effective as will inhaling by using some drops on an oil burner.

CS is the essential oil that is, in its chemical composition, most like our hormones and is used for PMS but is actually contraindicated in pregnancy as it can cause the uterine muscles to contract. Although this is what you want, very few aromatherapists would suggest you use it.

hunkermunker · 31/12/2005 21:39

Why, BS? Is it dangerous?

if your up for having sex then this should be after a bath. Then rest with your knees up and your pelvis tilted up as if you were to concieve. Do this for half hour.

beansprout · 31/12/2005 21:41

Not exactly, but something that can cause uterine contractions is not something that aromatherapists can recommend to pregnant women as it wouldn't be responsible.

hunkermunker · 31/12/2005 21:52

That's fair enough. Uterine contractions sound good to me atm

Liliana - will be whispering sweet nothings to DH very soon, I think

I used clary sage last time - massaged into my bump ( in a carrier oil ) - contractions started there and then. I had been having a long drawn out show for a day or two previously, but no other signs of labour starting. So, I was obviously ripe, but I reckon the massage set the ball rolling.

Mistymoo · 01/01/2006 10:45

I used clary sage - recommended by midwife. Was told to put in carrier oil and rub in to ankle as this was where a reflexologist would rub for the womb.

I'm not sure if it did start it - I was contracting already. My mum rubbed it in on and off all day. The next day dd was born.

It may have been the right time though - 5 days over.

DoesntTheNewYearDragOn · 01/01/2006 10:49

My gut response to this thread was "dear god that stuff smells rank"

I used it once on a burner and a couple of times in the bath.

How about reflexology? And don't forget to tell your baby how desperate you are to meet him/her and how you look forward to seeing him her on XX Jan

iv been using clary sage oil in my bath for the last 3-4 weeks to no result- im 40+6 now!! i havent tried putting it in a carrier oil tho so i think that might be the next move!! ill let you guys know if theres any result from that one!! btw what wold you use as a carrier oil??

fuzzywuzzy · 03/01/2006 11:54

Just don't rub it straight onto your bump, also I've heard that Clary Sage oil tends to give you really painful fast contractions, not sure if it's true or not.

Are you going to try all the old wives remedies, hot curry, RLT capsules (stronger than the actual tea), sex....

Good luck.

RosiePosie · 03/01/2006 12:17

I just used some olive oil as a carrier, contractions started there and then - not intense or painful at first though. Labour was a normal 8 hours from first contraction to birth.

JennyWren · 03/01/2006 12:35

I used clary sage oil during my labour, or at least my dh did for me - I couldn't reach the bottom of my bump! It was recommended by my midwife, because my contractions were fading. A few drops in a carrier oil (I'm not sure which - I had other things on my mind at the time ) massaged onto my bump - a contraction started every time. Unfortunately, they were still not strong enough, but that's another story...
I wouldn't use it though if you're not sure that baby's ready, as it could well start the ball rolling!

sweetkitty · 03/01/2006 12:37

SK waddles off to shop for some Clary Sage oil

Hunker you are NOT beating me to it!

ei23 · 03/01/2006 17:36

just tried the clary sage oil massaged onto my bump and into my ankles! v v relaxing even if it doesnt shift the baby!! we put it into sweet almond carrier oil which was recommended by the woman in holland and barratts! just gotta wait and see if it kicks anythin off!!

4blue1pink · 03/01/2006 17:59

Not clarry sage related but try califig a nice healthy laxative ( all natural fig and senna) i have heared a lot of good stories re labour starting this way!

ei23 · 04/01/2006 17:51

nope!! clary sage deffo doesnt work for me as nowt has happened!! i suppose it all depends on whether the baby is ready as to whether these 'remedies' actually work!! i think as crap as it may be youv jus gotta wait impatiently for labour as iv tried everything- hot hot hot curries, spicy food, sex (in various positions!!), clary sage oil, long walks, hot baths, lots of fibre and anything that may produce laxative effects- including laxatives themselves!! and nothing has worked for me if anyone has anymore suggestions then please be a darling and tell me cos im out of ideas!! sorry!!
