I'd heard nothing but bad stories about Pregnacare. I took Superdrugs own brand of pregnancy multi vitamins. I was fine on them to a point. They only made me Ill cos they have 100% RDA of iron in them and iron supplements have always disagreed with me

Jamina · 07/11/2011 17:23

Thanks will give them a go x

Make sure you take them after a meal. That always made me feel ill if I didn't!

AllIWant85 · 07/11/2011 17:27

I can't take the Pregnacare ones either. They made me violently sick. I'm now taking the Sanatogen Mother to Be vitamins as they are alot more gentle on the stomach. I also take mine just before bed instead of wuth food and I've had no side effects from them.

I have been taking Floradix liquid and never had any problems with it. You don't have to digest tablets as it's in a liquid form and also made mostly from fruit and vegetable extracts so perhaps might be a bit easier on the tummy? You can buy it in Holland and Barratt, most health food shops and on Amazon. It says it is especially suitable for mothers (expectant and breastfeeding). www.salusuk.com/products/floradix.html I take it every winter and find I get less coughs and colds than i used to and now i take it every day whilst i'm pg.

Floradix with orange juice, its help digestion and stop constipation

MrsHuxtable · 08/11/2011 09:44

I also had Hyperemesis and while it's a lot better now, I still can't swallow big pills.
Lidl sells disolvable tabletts that taste just like an Orange drink. They are the only Multivitamin ones I found, without the vit A. I also found some chewy sweets for children and adults in Boots with our daily recommendation of Vit D and Calcium.

I'm not pregnant & struggle with solid multivitamins making me want to barf! Try a liquid supplement - Floradix is great stuff. I still have to take it with food after lunch - otherwise it will make me feel a bit nauseous.

Why would you take supplements? Some vitamin tablets contain many times the amount of RDA you actually need and this is from The Independent

"It is possible, however, to overdose on vitamins. While a surfeit of a water-soluble vitamin, such as C, is seldom dangerous as it can be expelled via the urine, it is much harder to expel excess quantities of fat-soluble vitamins. Vitamin A is a case in point. In large doses it has the potential to accumulate in body fat, especially in the fatty tissue around the liver. The toxic effects of this can be severe, causing headaches and dizziness and in pregnant women adversely affecting the foetus."

Most health advisors would now recommend that you get your vitamins naturally as to be quite honest, supplements are just a way for drug companies to make money by convincing you that you NEED these vitamins to have a health pregnancy. You don't.

Folic acid is one supplement that is hard to get naturally (although this is now added to many cereals) but others are not so hard. A fruit smoothie every day can contain up to 3 portions of fruit. Then vegetables with your evening meal and a salad for lunch brings you up to your 5 a day. That's all you need really.

The darker and more colourful the fruit and veg - the better. So broccoli, sprouts, cabbage, peppers, spinach are all good. Blueberries are a superfood and great in smoothies. Cereals and brown bread/brown pasta and brown rice will all give you your fibre. Eating healthily will ensure you get just the right amount of vitamins and minerals and of course your body does a really good job of directing most of that good stuff to your baby. It's also a darn sight cheaper meaning that you have money left over to spend on anti-stretch mark cream Wink

Supplements become essential if ypu have hyperemesis and therefore can't eat anything, nevermind a balanced diet.

Also the Vit D is very important and if you life in Scotland like me, plus don't leave the house due to said Hyperemesis, you also need it as a supplement.

TheRhubarb · 08/11/2011 10:17

Sorry did read the bit about hyperemesis, thought it was just about supplements for a healthy pregnancy which drug companies do a good job convincing pregnant women that they need.

I see a kinesiologist as I had problems conceiving and then 2 mc's, and she recommended these. She uses all their products, and I've used them a lot myself in the past (I like alternative therapies!).

I took Pregnacare last time and was sick as a dog tbh, but it's not been nearly so bad this time. I thought they were expensive, but on checking I think they're pretty good value.

Sandra2011 · 08/11/2011 13:41

I've taken Pregnacare Plus in two pregnancies during the whole pregnancy and never had any problems.

Maybe I'm special then :)

smk84 · 08/11/2011 14:09

I have been awfully sick too, and was taking pregnacare which made it worse. Tried to find a pregnancy multivitamin without iron , as I suspected it might be that. The only one i found was Femibion, which is really expensive at about £17, but it is much better and doesn't add to the nausea. I figured I can go back to the cheaper ones when I (hopefully!) feel better.

I was recommended to take a good conception and then pregnancy multi-vitamin by my fertility clinic.

I have taken Pregnacare with both of my pregnancies. I take them after my evening meal and not had a problem. Particularly during the first trimester, my morning nausea was horrendous so I’d have had no chance of keeping any vitamins down then.

squishousdelicious · 22/02/2025 17:51

I had HG in my last pregnancy (and expecting it again with this one) - i always took anything that was once daily just before I went to bed, as I never needed to be sick overnight. Maybe that could help?

Francesca1986 · 23/02/2025 06:14

@Jamina

I was the same in my first pregnancy with Pregnacare. I’m taking Wild Nutrition pregnancy & new mum vitamins this time and feel a million times better X
