Hi all

My LO is now 3 months old and as I spent most of my pregnancy glued to MN, worrying about all sorts of things, I thought I'd share some of the stuff I've found from being the other side of baby arriving!

I LOVE my pushchair. I got an outnabout nipper because I needed something that fitted in my small car but would also go off-road to walk the dog. I was worried about it not being parent facing & it not having a 'pram' carrycot. As it turns out, not parent facing isn't a problem. It has a mesh where baby looks at me but 90% of time, he sleeps on walks so it's fine. I also bought a phil n teds cocoon which fits great, and that was invaluble before LO grew out of it.

Definately go for a light weight pushchair if you can! SOOOOO glad we did. :)

I have found my moby wrap amazing. Really quick to slip on now I'm used to it, if I just need a pint of milk. Saves faffing about with pram. Plus LO stays asleep for ages in it and I can be 'hands free' to have a cuppa/make phone call/hang washing etc.

LOVE baby sleeping bags. Now he's big enough for them, definately helps him sleep as he doesn't kick covers off. :)

Cold water sterilizing is easy and been happy with it for his bottles. He is ebf so only do the occasional bottle mind you.

OOhhh...best gift/purchases for sure are cot top changer. My goodness it has saved my back! And...also bf pillow has been great but not using it so much now LO is heavier. Was v helpful when he was tiny as he was only just 6lb at birth.

Found we got given lots of baby clothes which were great. Just used sleepsuits in v early weeks with little vests underneath but from a few weeks old, I just had sleepsuits at night and now have little outfits during day. LOVE dungarees. Easy to pop on and off.

Oh and we were given a lovely baby bath set. Were told probably wouldn't use baby bath itself, just the top and tail bowl but I've used the bath LOADs. LO got bad nappy rash (don't use too much cream, that started it off!) and bathing him daily from a month old has really helped clear it up. Only take a few mins to dunk him in tub. No slower than top and tail. Just easier doing top and tail when he was tiny in first couple weeks. I don't put much baby bath in and don't use johnsons as I think it's too strong. My nephew got eczema from it!

Lansinoh cream a MUST in early days if BFing! Got manual breast pump at about 1 month in and it's been FAB. I am lucky with good supply so doesn't take long to pump and it's v comfortable. Use a medela one.

Oh and you can't have too many muslins!!!

Anyways, just a few things I've learnt and thought I'd share them.

Final word, don't worry too much like me about how things will work. You will just find out and it'll be ok. Stupid things like how to take baby to supermarket (ie where baby goes in a trolley) and how to fit dog/baby in small car, used to worry me, but then you just do it and think 'ok' that's how!

Thank you!

I'm 32 weeks today and find these sort of tips really useful. I've got the Lansinoh cream and as it says on the box, very useful for dry lips!

I didn't think about getting a baby bath but bought one from Wilkinsons two weeks ago for £9 and so glad that I did. It means I can bath baby in the sitting room where it is warmer as we have a multi fuel fire.

I wasn't going to get a cot top changer but I have been rethinking that funnily enough and now I think I will invest in one. Do they fit most cots / cotbeds?

We don't know the sex so all I've got is sleepsuits and will be thinking that is all 'he'll' wear for the first four or so weeks anyways as 'he' is going to be a January baby and I've no intention of going anywhere special!

A friend gave me a baby carrier which I have every intention of using when doing housework and when going 'big' shopping in the town centre.

Your last point is so true. I spent so much time worrying about how I was going to do things with two of them (2nd preg) & 6 weeks in we are just doing it... It happens & it works out.

Also love my Moby wrap & my Ergo for when they are bigger. Metanium nappy cream is the bomb. & for a winter baby I think one or two bfing vests to layer under things are useful so you don't freeze when feeding in parks (guess that's a second baby thing!).

Great tips ladies - thank you v much! Best bit to know is that it does just fall into place. Good luck with your LOs and I'm hoping that others on the other side will also contribute their top tips!

Thanks for the tips! :)

I'm 3 weeks in with my first LO and totally agree with all of these points. Dunking in the baby bath is much easier than top and tailing, muslins are my beast friend and you definitely need nipple cream for the early days of bf no matter how much the experts try to tell you it shouldn't hurt! Mine were scabby for around 10 days but are fine now. I've only used vests and sleepsuits so far too.

Other things to add; newborn sized clothes will not necessarily fit your newborn! LO was 7lb 3 so not little but has been in tiny baby until today! MIL had been raiding bootfairs for the past few months which I wasn't too keen on but I'm so glad she did otherwise I'd have had nothing to put on LO!

Sleepsuits with the sleeves which fold over so you don't have to use scratch mits are fab - LO seems to be too small for the mits too atm.

Somebody told me (a MNetter) to get baby stuff in the same/similar colours so that they can all go in the same wash and you don't have to faff about with lights/coloureds so LO (a girl) is mainly in white/cream and sheets, blankets, towels etc are all cream and white too.

Can't think of anything else right now - we only slept for an hour last night here :)

How easy is it to get the baby in and out of the moby wrap? I've bought a sleepy wrap (very similar as far as I can tell) as I love the look of stretchy wraps. It looks quite straightforward to put on but putting the baby in doesn't look very easy! Does it take much getting used to?

RillaBlythe · 06/11/2011 19:14

Sevens, I found it very simple after the first time.

WorrisomeHeart · 06/11/2011 21:43

Definitely go for a cot top changer. We bought ours when DS was 4 months and I sooooo wish we'd had it from the start instead of the mat on the floor/coffee table. Mind you, now he's 1 I'm having to think about changing him on the floor again as he seems to have a daredevil streak!

Good luck ladies!
