Baby movement

Hi all,

This week, my GP told me I should be feeling my baby move "lots and lots" by now. This has completely freaked me out as I don't feel him/her move lots. I know baby is fine as the heartbeat has been checked twice this week but she has me freaking out that something is wrong, and now I'm wondering if what I feel is baby moving at all! The main reason is that the movements are quite quick to pass and I feel them really low down just above my pubic bone rather than in my tummy.

I'm 20+3 at the moment- can anybody shed some light/reassurance! My scan isn't for another week yet :o(

I'm pregnant with my third and as far as I recall they've all had pretty different energy levels at this sort of stage (I'm 21+6). My first moved a lot and quite violent movements (where I could see feet/arms pushing my stomach out by 20 weeks), whereas this one feels more chilled out and gentle and is a total night owl - barely moves in the daytime.

Also, different positions for placenta etc will affect movements.....you'll find out if that is what is going on at your scan.

I'm sure it's fine. If LO's been checked out then I wouldn't worry. Many women don't feel anything regular until 24-26wks. Is your placenta anterior? If so, you may not feel everything. You may also be dismissing more hoovings as you/bowl/whatever, rather than LO than you realise. Most of the movements I had (although I felt things fairly early) were down really low. LO was on her head, very low at my 20wks scan.
But, if you're still worried, always call MW. It's not worth the stress.

CopperLocs · 04/11/2011 22:00

I'm not too sure about the position of my placenta- is that something they would have told me at my 12 week scan? I just wish she hadn't said the "lots and lots" but but I guess I'm winding myself up now :( May call the midwife on Monday.

it feels like bubbles at first not necessarily a feeling you would recognise as a baby moving IYSWIM. It's quite common to not feel it with your first until later on.

Once you do "countthekicks" get to know how your baby moves.

Crosshair · 04/11/2011 22:04

I've never felt much movement compared to what others say, get squirms every 2/3 hours and if Im lucky the occasional kick.

Call her if you're worried to put your mind at rest. :)

dreamfeeder · 04/11/2011 22:05

no, I was getting twitchy before my 20 weeks scan last time, had hardly felt a thing, like you. Turned out I had an anterior placenta. The sonographer said 'oh, you won't have felt much'. I could have kissed her!!!! Don't worry, heartbeat has been checked, just relax, enjoy the movements you do get, and they WILL get stronger!! Mine did. It's just while the baby is still quite little, and the placenta is at the front and cushions you from feeling their kicks.

I bet it's something like that.

I'm pg again with twins, and this time I think I'm feeling movements now- tiny little flutters- at 16 weeks, but only one I think. I know I have two placenta's, and one is posterior (no idea where they said the other was!) so maybe I am only feeling one move. Either way, I'm stressing, and most likely, neither of us should be!

kiki22 · 04/11/2011 22:07

You shouldn't worry at all you your docs talking rubbish they don't worry about no movement until 22 weeks so feeling some movement at 20 is fine. You sound the same as me i didn't feel anything high up until 26 weeks all down near my pubic bone. You'd also think that by 28 weeks were i am that you would feel every movement so if i didn't feel him i'd think he'd not moved for hours but i went for a scan last week where i watched his wave his arms and bring his feet to his face and back down and i did not feel any of it at all only when he turned around. My placentas nice and high so theres no reason i don't feel that much just that i seem to have a gentle baby his movements are very smooth not jerky like most according to the sonographer.

As long as you feel something your fine.

Sophiesworld · 04/11/2011 22:13

I was really stressed about this before my 20 week scan - people kept asking if I'd felt the baby move much and I didn't feel I had had any definite movements, just a few things that might have been. I read about anterior placentas and suspected that might be the case and sure enough it was confirmed at the scan.

Sounds like it's perfectly normal anyway even if you don't have an anterior placenta so try not to worry.

By the end of the pg DD was sticking her arms and legs out everywhere and contorting my stomach into all sorts of weird shapes :o

Crosshair · 04/11/2011 22:22

Just wanted to say my placenta is posterior!

CopperLocs · 04/11/2011 22:43

Ah thank you ladies- this is much needed reassurance! Funny enough, as I type this, LO has decided to reassure itself with a few movements! Counting down the days to my scan now :)

kiki, my GP has a lot to answer for with her stupid flipant comments this week. In this same appointment she all but confirmed that I had a UTI (which I don't) and that it was pretty much self inflicted because I hadnt been drinking enough fluids. I'm refusing to see her again, I will see another Dr at my surgery instead because the last time I checked, scare mongering was not in her job description Angry

Wait til you see buba moving in your scan not feeling it puts your mind at ease :)

CopperLocs · 05/11/2011 00:03

I bet it does, I honestly can't wait! Plus I really want to find out the sex :O

It did put my mind at rest when the midwife on the Labour Ward checked the hearbeat with a doppler and LO moved away from the probe- I didn't feel it move then either but s/he moved cos she had to chase LO to find the hearbeat again lol!

I didn't feel anything until about 4 days after my 20 week scan and then it was bubbles and irregular, wouldn't say I could monitor anything until after 24 weeks now at 38 weeks you can see her mexican waves haha

tentative123 · 05/11/2011 17:16

I'm 22 and only now starting to feel movements more than once every few days. That was kind of the doc to put your mind at rest!!

tentative123 · 05/11/2011 17:16

weeks that is, not years old (sadly)

thegauntlet · 06/11/2011 14:29

addictediam · 06/11/2011 19:23

with my first i didnt feel the movements untill 22 weeks and even thoes were few and fdar between, it was at 25 weeks i could feel regular movements and feel her 'lots and lots'

user59457812 · 06/11/2011 22:19

Hey copperlocs I posted something really similar yesterday. I am 20 +6 and baby's movements are pretty variable. I had a couple of days of pretty hard kicks at the same time each day, but for the last too years quite weak and very sporadic - lucky if I can feel ten in a day.

I'm also a bit worried about it, esp. as I know my placenta is posteria. Some of these posts do make me feel a bit better though!

Comparing notes it would seem like it's pretty normal, although I will feel SO much better when LO is kicking all the time. My pregnancy book does also say at this stage movement can be sporadic at best. I think I'm still going to ask the midwife about it tomorrow as I need to speak to her anyway...

user59457812 · 06/11/2011 22:19

I mean for the last two days the movements are variable - doh!
