What to wear to give birth in?

Probably a ridiculous concern but I cannot decide what I should wear to actually give birth in.

I have PJs for after the event but clearly cant do the actually deed in them!

What is everyone else doing?

Clearly I need to get out more!

an old nightie that you don't mind throwing out, since it will get covered in blood and probably poo.

reallytired · 04/11/2011 12:57

I would wear old clothes that you don't care about during and after birth.

You will have quite heavy locia in the first few days. Think about protecting the bed with a waterproof mattress cover when you get home. Locia is really the mother of periods!

I wore an old nightie both times.

TimothyClaypoleLover · 04/11/2011 12:57

A cheap nightie from Primark did the job for me.

OneHandFlapping · 04/11/2011 12:57

I wore an old shirt of DHs, one of the ones with traditional shirt tails to cover my bum.

Crosshair · 04/11/2011 12:58

I've been thinking about maybe a oversized shirt.

TeacupTempest · 04/11/2011 13:02

Dont have old nighties as usually sleep in the nude ( probably not a good idea on a hospital ward!) and DH is not very tall so his old shirts dont really give much bum coverage!

I will check out Primark and men's shirt option too.

Definitely going to get some protection for the bed for the aftermath!

I think my brain is focussing on this to avoid the issue of having to think about the actual pain side of things!

I bought a cheap nightie to wear, but it didn't even come out of the bag.I ended up in just my bra. Started off fully clothed but ended up shedding clothes as I went. No idea why!

Flisspaps · 04/11/2011 13:05

I wore one of DH's t-shirts and a nursing bra.

By the time it got to pushing I was roasting, stuck on a bed with drips, monitors and a wearing-off epidural, with the Entonox stick in my hand, wishing someone could read my mind and cut the bloody things off. I didn't have the presence of mind to actually be able to ask someone to do it for me.

Find something comfortable, that you can get off easily if you want to or don't mind cutting as well as getting stained!

I kept the t-shirt though, and plan to wear it this time round.

I bought a cheap nightie from Primark, but ended up just wearing the saem top I had arrived in. Never even thought to get changed in the end.

BelleRomford74 · 04/11/2011 13:51

I used to work in Primark & we sold bucket loads of the cheap jersey nighties approx £4.50 each to pregnant ladies goes up to size 22.. also their toweling robes are a good price if your normal one is tight. Their big full pant knickers are also much cheaper than maternity ones!! :)

SixStringWidow · 04/11/2011 13:57

I wore and oversized grey t-shirt.

I still have it and I wear it to lounge about in the house.

It has holes in it and is all out of shape but I'll never throw it away.

Oh, I also wore bright pink socks Grin

Sparklingbrook · 04/11/2011 13:57

Old nightie for DS1. Was still fully dressed with DS2. They had to pull my trousers (and DH's boxers i was wearing for comfort Blush ) off while DS2 was arriving!

pinkpeony · 04/11/2011 14:00

I wore the hospital gown for both DCs. Don't have to worry about what happens to it after!

TeacupTempest · 04/11/2011 14:01

Ha! Bright pink socks!

Sparklingbrook yikes!

I told them I had to push and they didn't believe me Teacup Sad

BleughCowWonders · 04/11/2011 14:03

V cheap (primark?) long nightie. Nothing worse than wondering what's on show if it's too short. And something clean and cotton for afterwards

But the reality is you'll probably whip it off to push the baby out. Lots of women do.

But also consider a birth pool - tankini top?

littlemisslozza · 04/11/2011 14:04

I took an old t-shirt of DH's to wear but actually ended up with nothing on at all as I could not bear to have anything on my skin! Blush I'm not an extrovert at all, I'd never have imagined that I would do that!

teacoupons · 04/11/2011 14:07

Get a cheap nightie, button down if you're breastfeeding or low cut at least. Primark have nice ones for £5 and New Look have a plaid long shirt nightie for £10.

If I'm honest, I had a nightie but was so hot with DD1 I ended up completely naked in front of hospital staff, two midwives and a doctor. Now I am mortified. At the time, I was freeee. DD2 wasn't much better. A low cut black sweater dress as she came so fast I had no time to change!! ShockGrin

Prometheus · 04/11/2011 14:08

I bought a cheap Primark nightie but ended up in a hospital gown I shed my clothes when I arrived and was lifted onto bed. Handed a gown by the midwife....was in too much pain to search bag for nightie Grin

Methe · 04/11/2011 14:09

I wore a nightie and then washed it and still wear it now, 7 years after the event.

BadRoly · 04/11/2011 14:10

With dd1 I wore a surgical gown as she as a c section. With the other 3 I wore whatever I turned up in, so t-shirt I had on and bra.

Don't recall having the "change into something more comfortable" moment - would be interested to know when/how that happens Grin

FreckledLeopard · 04/11/2011 14:11

Think I ended up giving birth naked. Can't for the life of me remember having any clothes on. Maybe a sheet somewhere? No idea. Probably not something that you'll worry about when the time comes!

ConstanceNoring · 04/11/2011 14:13

I wore a full length black slip from M&S for both births as I knew how damned hot it would be in hospital. If you're planning on bfing remember to wear a nursing bra underneath.

TeacupTempest · 04/11/2011 14:15

Perhaps I should try to come to terms with the fact I may be doing this naked then!

StetsonsAreCool · 04/11/2011 14:20

Am I the only one who did this naked? TBH what I was wearing was the last thing on my mind. I had oversized tshirts and all sorts of comfy stuff in my hospital bag. The only things that came out of it were nappies and babygrows Blush
