SPD / pelvic girdle pain-how does it feel at first?

Hi,

I'm 22 weeks pregnant with my third child. My first pregnancy was normal, the second sadly ended just before this point, but I have never felt this sort of pain before.

It's not really sore (yet...?) but basically it started with a sort of achy/swollen feeling in my perineum, and then yesterday one buttock started to hurt a biy and this morning it's sore at the top of both my legs -and my sacrum feels tender.

Can anyone who has had it give me any advice? Is it weird to get it after two pregnancies without it? Any advice would be great!

Thanks

i think it can strike in any pregnancy, whether you've had it before or not.
your symptoms sound pretty typical so probably best to get a diagnosis and treatment asap. Mine struck at 14 weeks this time around (had it in the final weeks with my previous pregnancy) but a wonderful osteopath has helped keep it under control, by adjusting my sacrum every couple of weeks.

Now I'm almost 34 weeks and it's getting quite bad but I've got a scary big support belt from the NHS physiotherapist that seems to help a bit. The physio also showed my hubby how to adjust me, but I seem to be slipping out of whack constantly now!

Good luck - lots of women suffer from it but to varying degrees. Mine sucks now but really it's been well under control for most of the pregnancy so that in itself was a big result!

PS - do read up on the dos and don'ts while you are waiting for an appointment. Things like keeping your knees together, etc. can help prevent more problems.

I was wondering this - have similar symptoms to OP. I have read it can be occur in a subsequent pregnancy randomly or possibly related to how the previous birth went, like if the pelvis underwent some degree of trauma from forceps or something. I was referred to a physio who did not examine me at all, just had a chat & dismissed what I was saying. I'm going to read up on self help & get a second opinion as I know you can cause serious damage if you have it severely & aren't taking the appropriate measures.

I was just planning to start a new thread regarding this subject.

I'm currently 23 weeks pregnant (2nd pregnancy) and my hip pains started 5 weeks ago.

I'm sleeping really badly, wake up every few hours to adjust myself and around 4am I'm thinking about getting up because pain is so bad.
Have pain on both hips and also pubic area.

Yesterday my MW send a referal to obs physio but she also mentioned that rarely it helps.
Waiting time for physio is around 4 weeks.

Agree that it can strike any pregnancy randomly - for example, I only had it in my first pregnancy. Mine started about the same gestation as yours, in my sacrum, and really was agonising and incapacitating at times. Sorry, perhaps not want you want to hear but I left it a bit long before seeking help. See your GP or MW because you need a referral to an obstetric physio ASAP. They can teach you exercises that might help. You may also find a support band helps - your MW or the physio should be able to advise.

At night, I found a very long pillow helped to prop me into a semi-comfortable position.

I'm wondering whether I have this, too - 19+3 and I feel it mostly when I walk or go upstairs, as a 'clenching' kind of pain in my left buttock only. I wouldn't call it agonising, but it makes walking very uncomfortable, at a time when I want to remain as fit as possible. What, if anything, can be done?
