Don't you think waiting from week 28 to 34 is a really long time to see a midwife or a GP? If it's your first pregnancy you get a GP appointment at 31 weeks aswell.

Is anyone making an extra appointment anyway? Or are you all sticking to the timetable appointments?

I suppose it depends if you have any particular concerns.... I found after my 34 week appointment my next appointment was at 38 weeks which I was surprised at (especially as I had DC1 37+4), but if its the system then...

Wormshuffler · 01/11/2011 06:38

Its really wrong, I was supposed to have gone from 20 weeks to 28 weeks without seeing anyone either! as it was I just rang up the gp's and asked if I could be seen at 24 weeks and it was fine. It is 10 years since my last PG so it feels like the first time again to me.

The appointments here dont change for 2nd baby - we also have one at 32 weeks. 6 weeks I think us a very long time.

Cutelittlecatlover · 01/11/2011 09:01

We have the same appointments for second pregnancy which I was quite surprised about but we don't see anyone from 16 weeks until 25 weeks (apart from anomoly scan obviously) which seems like ages!

mumt1 · 01/11/2011 09:09

I no! I'm 15 weeks n I've not seen my midwife since I was 8 weeks, fair enuf there's not much she can do in that time but having had as many complications as I have so far ud expect to see her..iv had bleeding(until 10 weeks) and severe cramps and pains the whole pregnancy so far, I was up all nyt the other week with wt felt like contractions. My whole belly was going tight. (2nd pregnancy) so no wt it feels like. N I phoned her n she jst said well she's not working so shud contact someone else and turned her phone off!

deardear · 01/11/2011 09:21

mumt1 did you have a scan in between your 8 week and now? if so that will be counted as a MW visit.

i am on DC3 with a 12 year gap. nothing has really changed and i see the MW or hospital every 4 weeks. next one will be at 26 weeks. if you are concerned just book an appointment. luckily my doctors are only up the road and if i am concerned i can usually drop in and see the MW without an appointment (she is there one day a week).

notcitrus · 01/11/2011 09:33

It's less long than between 20 and 28 weeks...
Personally I don't feel that trekking to the hospital again before 28 weeks would be beneficial, but the MWs have made it clear that if there's anything I'm worrying about I should contact them, along with list of symptoms to watch out for - otherwise to rest as much as possible and let the baby get on with it.

Had appts at 11 weeks (booking), scan at 13, then appt at 16 (catch up on medical problems), 20, 28 then I think it's 34, 38, and 40 weeks.
First time was 21 weeks for booking (plus scan at 15 weeks to tell me I was pregnant, but long wait for MW appts), then 28, 34, 38, plus an extra appt I made at 23 weeks for SPD, so essentially the same.

TeWihara · 01/11/2011 09:45

I haven't had any between 20 + 28 weeks, and now don't have my next until 36 weeks!

I don't really mind, everything is proceeding totally normally, and although it was good to be reassured in my first pregnancy I don't feel I need the reassurance this time.

banana87 · 01/11/2011 10:01

It's a long time. I am going private and being seen every other week from 28 weeks and now weekly from 36 weeks. I think leaving it is careless, but thats the NHS for you :)

ImpYCelyn · 01/11/2011 10:04

I haven't got anything between 12 and 20 weeks (actually 14 and 22 is turned out after the scan). It's such a long time and I find I'm panicking a lot more than I did last time.

so I bought a fetal doppler on ebay

MrBloomsNursery · 01/11/2011 10:19

I was seen at 16 weeks, then 20 weeks (scan), 24 weeks, and 28 weeks. I just feel they've seen me regularly at the start and then can't be bothered towards the end.

I might book a GP appointment anyway - they can't deny me an appointment can they?!! Grin.

I think it's crap quite frankly! I'm preg with no.4 and the system's changed every time! Did have a 10 yr gap between pregnancies no.2 and 3 but just 11mths between 3 and this one. Went 2mths frm 16wks, which though is mid-pregnancy still think they should get you in for blood pressure, urine and you and your babies general wellbeing. When I had my first daughter, (who's now 13,) they used to see you all the time (and every wk towards the end.)
Having said all that, all they seem to do at the later appointments now in my experience is find something else to worry you! I'm 38wks and saw MW yesterday who promptly sent me for an emergency scan as both her AND another MW thought baby had now gone transverse! (I knew he hadn't as have so much low pressure and you can tell from my long lying bump in my opinion anyway!!) After a worrying drive to hospital, getting v strong and fairly painful contractions with a wining toddler in tow, :( I had two nurses quickly examine me who both said immediately that he was def still head down and did back up scan to prove it! Grrr...

lovingthecoast · 04/11/2011 21:01

Ive just had No4 last month. I was booked in at 8wks, then seen at 16wks then 28wks then 36wks and that was it. That is apparently standard here now from 2nd baby onwards. 12wk gaps but told I could make an extra one at 40wks if I wanted and if I went over to make one for 41wks.

I'm lucky as I didn't have any issues but I can imagine finding it stressful if it was my second and I had had problems with my first.

NinkyNonker · 04/11/2011 21:05

I'll be seen at 9 wks for booking in then it'll be about 16 weeks. Then all the way to 28 weeks!

GwendolineMaryLacey · 04/11/2011 21:07

Definitely a lot of big gaps. I saw a mw at 16 weeks, then scan at 20, then mw at 28 weeks. A 3 month gap between 16 and 28 weeks seems ridiculous but I guess they think you know enough to contact them if necessary. If it wasn't for a couple of appts I've had this week re: blood pressure, the next time I see anyone would be 34 weeks.

blueeyedmonster · 04/11/2011 21:25

I saw my mw at 8 wks, 16wks and 28wks. I wasn't meant to see her until 34wks next but she asked to see me at 31wks. I can only assume it is because I measured 26wks at my 28wk app and she wants to check the growth.

cerealqueen · 05/11/2011 00:07

i've seen the MW 9 times so far, more than the schedule, prob due to my age and the fact they kept messing things up (so much fuss about being 43 but they couldn't manage the basics, I've had to chase everything constantly). I've been more concerned about the quality of visits than the quantity, reading about what should happen and what does happen. Each visit they do BP, wee test, palpate, listen to heartbeat.

In my notes though, says in bold for 34 weeks - 'Review mental health and social assessment again' That didn't happen.
36 weeks - .Vit K discussion, newborn screening, postnatal care, awareness of baby blues and post-natal depression. That didn't happen either!!
