Is it normal? I'm going to my doctor about it as I've read some scary things. Anyone else experiencing this?

Ds had hiccups around 4 times a day since very early on in the pregnancy. Now 32 weeks with dd and shes just started getting them loads - between 3 and 5 times a day. Everyone ive asked says is normal. Not sure i want to ask but what scary things have you read? I was told it just meant they are practising breathing so is a good thing!

THanks Mmmmcheese. I can't remember how much DD hiccuped, but this baby likes to do it alot.

I'm wondering if this is what I feel it's
Like a shuddering or twitching feeling but lasts only for five to ten seconds?

hubbahubster · 29/10/2011 20:04

Have to say, of all the things I worried about in pregnancy, hiccups wasn't one of them... DS had them loads, mammoth sessions of 10-30 mins at a time. I found it reassuring since he wasn't a big kicker - at least I knew he was fine. He still gets them now a fair bit and he's 14 weeks old! A midwife in hospital when he was born asked me whether he hiccupped a lot when he was a bump since he still had them once he was born - she wasn't surprised when I said yes, must be fairly common. Don't worry! I remember those weird little shudders with affection now...

hairylights, I get a constant jerky/twitchy movement every second for about 1 minute to 5 minutes.

Thanks hubbahubster, I'll try not to worry! Won't google stuff anymore!

During my pregnancy DS hiccupped all the time; after he was born he hiccupped all the time... He does it much less frequently now. I really wouldn't worry. Smile

My DS hiccupped a lot and this continued after he was born until he was a few months old. I'm also curious about the scary things you read. If you are worried though do chat to your mw- that's what they're there for.

It might be hiccups but it may also be baby 'practicing' swallowing. I never knew they did this until I had a growth scan this week and the sonographer noticed the baby doing it and it felt like hiccups to me only much shorter (happened 4-5 times as opposed to going on for minutes like hiccups do). I wouldn't worry, tis completely normal :)

Dd1 had hiccups a lot, used to drive me nuts and keep me awake at night, she was fine but still gets hiccups every day at the age of 7.

MrBloomsNursery · 29/10/2011 22:46

I don't want to post anything here about what I read, and I don't suggest looking it up either.

You're all right, it is something that is normal, and I shouldn't really worry. I will phone up MW to just ask to reassure myself.

He's hiccupping again as I'm writing this!

Both my dd's were terrible hiccuppers in utero. Drove me mad. They were born healthy. Now on pregnancy 3 and have had no hiccups - so here was me worrying that there is something wrong because NO hiccups!!

Life is funny. Do you really need to bother the midwife about this, I mean it is normal, right?

breatheslowly · 29/10/2011 22:58

I thought that hiccuping is exercise for the diaphragm - so effectively practice breathing. DD did it loads and continued after she was born. I just thought it was quite cute when I was pregnant. I can't imagine what you found googling it to make you so concerned [hconfused].

LDNmummy · 29/10/2011 23:04

My DD did it a lot as a bump, and a month after having her, she hasn't slowed down with it. I wouldn't worry, it is normal from what I understand.

MrBloomsNursery · 29/10/2011 23:14

I'm glad that alot of you have been experiencing the hiccups too, or have experienced them in the past. It's definitely sounding like a normal occurrence for everyone so feel less worried. Thanks.

I try not to google anything about pregnancy - ignorance is bliss as they say [hwink]
