hi
my first post here :)

I have just found out that I am PG 5 wks, our first child after trying for a while now.
me and hubby are both 39 yrs old
apart from the aches the pains the wind, the sore bits the icky feeling and feeling absolutly terrified I do have an added worry I am afraid, apart from being rather elderly in the bigger scheme of things I am AB neg blood group and DH is A positive

I have read on the net that if the mum is neg blood group this can cause issues, which frightens me, I have to wait another week to see the GP (next fri) and I phoned the to make an appt with the midwife and the first available one is 17 Nov! which takes me to 9 weeks (I think LOL) not really doing much to reassure me,

I was wondering if any one has any knowledge of these please :)

thank you

you get an anti-D injection at least once during the pregnancy and straight after the birth. As long as you get this I think it's unlikely to be a problem.

supergreenuk · 28/10/2011 22:08

It's only a problem for dc 2 or 3 etc. If you don't get the anti-d injection it could cause problems for further pregnancy but this one should be okay. Ensure you get the jabs at recommended times and situations.

UnDeadDolly · 28/10/2011 22:10

Congratulations first of all!

Secondly, please don't worry about being rh negative. I am rh neg and am pg with DC2. All your midwife will do is schedule you for a injection of anti-d at around 28 weeks, and depending on baby's blood group, you may have to have another one once the baby is born.

Also, if you have any bleeding after 12 weeks gestation, then you'll need an injection then too.

The anti d stops your body making anti bodies that could attack the fetus if your blood crosses the placenta. This usually only happens at birth, or if you have any bleeding during pregnancy.

Wishing you well with your pregnancy.

melliebobs · 28/10/2011 22:10

As someone has just said you get an anti d injection (I've got mine at 28 weeks) then there's another one after strait after the birth and mw said they take a sample of chord blood. It's more of an issue in your next pregnancy if you don't get it rather than this one. But that's why they do blood tests to find out what group you are so they can offer the jab to you

thank you so much for your replies, you have already made me and DH feel a lot better :)

Hi Bubblyuk, congratulations. Same info as above, but also if you have a fall or any kind of hard knock you will need a jab of Anti-D in case of internal bleeding. I was rear-ended (ooh, er missus Grin) when pregnant with DS1 and though felt ok was advised by the hospital to get an extra jab.
Don't worry about it, am sure it will all work out fine.

BlingLoving · 28/10/2011 22:23

A woman I work with is rh neg and on her second child she discovered she was producing anti bodies as for some reason (they think she may have miscarried without even realising it between dc1 and dc2). Her midwife told her this was so unusual these days she hadn't looked after a woman with anti bodies in 5 years or more! I was relieved as am also rh neg.

My point is have the injection, make sure every one knows you are rh neg and it will all be fine. Congratulations!! Smile

feelingratheroverwhelmed · 28/10/2011 22:23

You'll be fine. I'm RhNeg and have just had DS2. I bled a lot at the beginning of this pg (no idea why) so I had an anti-d at 12 weeks. Then I had a useless MW and had my scheduled jab late (about 34 weeks) as she forgot. But all is FINE! And if this is your first then you really don't need to worry, as it only affects 2nd and subsequent children.
My advice is to familiarise yourself with when you need the jabs, so you can chase them up just in case you get my MW!

secretcodes · 28/10/2011 22:34

Please don't panic. It's a lot more common than you probably think. I am A negative and DH is O positive. We had a miscarriage age 18 and was given Anti D injection to prevent anti bodies, age 23 we had our DS1 also had anti D during pregnancy and after his birth as he is also O positive. I am now 32 weeks with DS2 and again have had Anti D, no complications and no anti bodies detected. They will screen you at your booking in appointment to check for anti bodies you may already have built up against the baby and again at 28-30 weeks when you will be offered Anti D. It prevents almost all of the problems with rhesus problems and really is not a problem now days. Congratulations on your pregnancy!

kerala · 28/10/2011 22:43

Its nothing to worry about these days just an extra jab. Both my DDS were rh neg too so didn't really need the post birth injection but they did it anyway. Was a real problem in the 1970s for subsequent babies but not an issue these days so really not worth worrying about.

twogirls1more · 29/10/2011 06:44

Same as all above! (congrats by the way!) I'm O neg and preg with no.4. I'm also now with my second DH. Had the Anti D jabs with my previous pregnancies but didn't need this time as DH2 is also O neg! Didn't cause me any additional worry or complication, just be lead by your MW hun. :)

KenDoddsDadsDog · 29/10/2011 06:50

I'm AB neg, had the anti D and absolutely fine!
Congratulations and try not to worry.

ComeToTheEdge · 29/10/2011 06:54

They write it in big red letters on your file with the midwife so it isn't missed, so don't worry about it.

I had an amnio and am A- so had the injection then, and then another one when dd was born. She is A+.

Congratulations!!

pregnantmimi · 29/10/2011 08:46

can I just add that Im res neg I had bleeding 5 weeks 11 and 13 and I dont know if its connected but I spoke to alot of woman res neg who have the same problem but its ok as long as you dont bleed after 16 weeks which id when it can produce antibodies your midwife will go thou all this with you not saying your more likely to bleed just that I found after talking to lots of woman on here and at home they had same problem/ I had the anti d at 28 weeks it didnt hurt and felt fine after so dont worry and dont nother reading too much on the net I did and it freaked me out bit too much.

PumpkinSizedEmmaRoyd · 29/10/2011 08:55

I'm age 40 Rh neg, have 2 DC's, no problems whatsoever, had the anti-d. Try not to worry, relax while you can before he or she comes along! Smile

bubblyuk · 29/10/2011 10:37

thank you so much ever one for your messages, i really do feel a lot better about this now :) and it certainly seems more common than I thought :o

Congratulations Smile
Around 10-15% of people are rhesus negative, so its something that your midwife will be very used to dealing with. It doesnt need any specific management at the stage you are at, and not until 28 weeks unless you have a bleed.
