Badminton when pregnant

I have just found out I'm pregnant - approx 5 weeks. It has taken us almost 2 years, and we'd already had the first appointments to start IVF. So it was a shock to get a BFP - a delightful one! :) This is our first and DH is wrapping me in cotton wool.

I have loved my legs bums and tums class, but do tend to be v enthusiatic. I agree that this isn't necessarily the best form of exercise for me now. I played badminton in the past and also pilates.

Now, my DH says he isn't comfortable in me playing badminton. I think he's being over-protective and think it'd be fine. What is the general view? And is it ok to go back to pilates and just tell the instructor I'm pregnant?

Thanks.

omg it's pregnancy not an illness, but if you've struggled to get to this point its understandable DH is being overprotective bless him. Badminton you'd be fine, it's non contact and good cardio exercise. Obviously there's alot of changing of direction so later on your balance could effect this and also ligaments are looser etc so there is a tiny small chance you could go over on your ankle or whatever. And as for Pilates, fine again, but tell your instructor, they'll be able to give you adaptations, but tbh you should be ok carrying on as normal till about 10-12 week

You are not ill and badminton is not dangerous.

You can follow the signs from your body (eg fatigue) to limit your activity, as appropriate.

I'm 9 weeks. I played badminton 2 weeks ago & am playing again next week. It was fine. I think the general advice is if it's an activity you are already used to/ doing - it is fine to continue.

Excellent. Thank you. Just what I thought! Bless him.

I know how important exercise is and just going on the cross trainer is mind-numbing!

Shall have words tonight :)

He is being very over protective. Take him along to your next appointment and get a medical bod to explain to him that normal exercise is good for you when pregnant. He might worry less if he hears it from an official source.

If you go to exercise classes that is fine too. Just let them know you are pregnant. Some instructors might not be happy to take you still, that doesn't mean it isn't safe, they might just have ridiculously cautious liability rules going on.
