Question about c-sections, scarring and time gaps

Have been wondering about this for a while.

I know that after a c-section you get scar tissue inside that can make further sections take longer and can even cause probs, but do time gaps between sections make a difference to how much scar tissue there is or am i talking nonsense.

If there was a bigger gap would there be more scar tissue ???

Sounds like such a stupid question now i've typed it out LOL.

Hello - Had nearly six years gap between my 2 sections but this scar is slower healing and not so neat - think this is in part due to an infection and it is also a wobbly line! I'm also older!

don't know for sure, but I don't think scar tissue increases with time. It will certainly be stronger the more time passes but that will also help it to hold well during late pregnancy. Certainly my consultant has no qualms with the 4 year gap between the sections I am having.

eidsvold · 29/12/2005 08:38

I had over 2 year gap between my 2 sections and they actually cut out a lot of the scar tissue from c-section no1 when they stitched me up this time. I also healed much quicker this time than last.

I can't comment about the internal scarring. My first external scar was large and thick (keloid scarring). When I had ds (seond c section) the cut that scar out.....a flap of skin....wierd! MY scar now is more normal.

I wouldn't have thought that the wait time matters that much, once the tissue had healed iyswim....so I don't think you keep on building more and more scar tisse with time, if that is what you mean.

I had a gap of 3 years and 3 months between my two sections.

MerryKidMas · 29/12/2005 09:29

There was 3.3 years between my sections. The healing was alot slower the 2nd time around but I think thats because I over did things. (I had a 3yr old to look after and my own place).

I don't think the scarring increases with time. The more sections you have, the more scarring tissue there will be. I was going to have an operation to remove some scarring tissue due to still being in pain after 3 years, but the Dr decided it wasn't necessary.

blueshoes · 29/12/2005 12:05

My bro who is a doctor says that there is increased internal scarring with each c-section. That is why as a general guideline, they try to limit sections to 3 - subsequent ones beyond that would be more difficult due to scarring.

I don't think increased scarring is linked to passage of time, though.

Martianbishop/eidsvold, I take a lot of comfort from your posts. My e-cs scar is hypertropic (red and raised, at times itchy) which gets me down a little. If I had a second, one of the factors for me going for an elective cs (if I am given the choice) is to cut out the scar tissue and hope it will heal better second time round. Entirely frivolous reason, of course, but then again, I did not ask for an e-cs either .

Thanks for all the replies.

I have already had 3 sections, with a 2 yr gap between the 1st and 2nd, and a 3 yr gap between the 2nd and 3rd.

I have always healed very very well but have always wondered if the bigger the time gap the more scar tissue there is.

Thanks again

Oh and Iota, that would be telling
