I am only 6 weeks pregnant, and away from the uk till next week and (sorry for tmi),today, a brown discharge appeared when I went to the loo. also have a bit of a low dull ache. I know that if anything is going to happen,. it will happen, but is there anything I can do until I can go to the doctors when I get back next week. This is my first pg and my dh and I are totally distraught (even though I know that won't help!) my other 'symptoms ( nausea and big boobs!) are still there.
ifanyone can offer any words of advice, i'd be really grateful. thanks. x

Hi Olivo, just rest is all you can do.
HOWEVER, I am on my second pregnancy now and both times I have had spotting. In my first pregnancy I had a few episodes of spotting in the first trimester and it was really frightening and upsetting, I had early scans and everything was alright - the spotting died out and the pregnancy was fine. It was a tiny amount - like the size of a 2 pence piece per day, and was dark/watery. I also had mild cramping like a period.
I am now 7 weeks pregnant, and last week began getting spotting again, although no cramps. I have had spotting everyday for the last seven days, bar one. I had a scan last week and there was a heartbeat, so I think that it is maybe something that I do.
I still have mild nausea, so as long as I have that I think I am probably OK.

I think implantation bleeding is a lot more common than people realise, and as long as you have the other symptoms with your boobs and sickness, then your hormone levels are probably still high.

It is frightening, but it doesn't mean it is the end by any means. Keep your eye on it - from what they say it is bright blood that is more worrying.

I had a brown discharge and an achey pain when i was pg with ds2. About 8 weeks gone. I was in Asda at the time and was so scared. I phone the hospital and they just told me to rest. Try not to worry - easier said than done though. My ds2 is 20 months now

When you are back, you can ask for an early scan, if your EPAU is sympathetic. The fact that your other pregnancy symptoms are still there is a good sign.

blueshoes · 28/12/2005 13:27

olivo, I know how difficult it is to stay calm in your situation.

At such an early stage of your pg, I don't think that there is anything you can do - really sorry, but that is what the hospital told me. But just wanted to let you know that I started bleeding brown also around 6 weeks and continued to do so for the entire first trimester, at one point even heavy red bleed - I was so sure it was over then. But for some reason, gods were smiling, I went on to carry dd to term.

When you get back, go to the Early Pregnancy Unit of a hospital and get a scan. Wishing you a sticky bean and much much hope.

Thanks for your help and reassurance - am in the middle east and reluctant to go to a doctor here. do you think it would be best to phone my doctors at home - might they arrange a scan or something for when i get back next week?

I'd talk to your docs when you're home. The EPAU will mostly only have last-minute sorts of bookings, anyway.

The thing is, they might well not see a heartbeat at 6 weeks, anyway - I only ever saw a heartbeat at 7 or 8 weeks with my pregnancies.

brown blood means it is old blood - from a bleed a few days ago - so any problem was then and not now. Bright red or pink blood means it is fresh and currently bleeding.

So brown blood is probably less concerning than red blood. If you still have the other symptoms then you are probably ok - just relax and try and forget about it, and get a check up when you get home.

morningpaper · 28/12/2005 14:55

If you've been doing the deed recently it might just be from your cervix - this happened to me - and if so is nothing to worry about. good luck.

I had exactly the same thing with ds1 I was told by the doctor it was implantation bleeding - where the fertilised egge embeds into the womb and that it would stop in a few days, IT DID!

MerryKidMas · 28/12/2005 20:57

I had a bleed when I was 5 weeks pregnant with DD. The Dr didn't even bother with an early scan as there was nothing they could do. I was advised to rest (not easy when working full-time) The rest of my pregnancy went smoothly and DD was born at 39.5 weeks.

thecattleareALOHing · 28/12/2005 21:14

I had bleeding with dd too. days of brown blood and then quite a lot of red. DD was absolutely fine. No particular reason for it that anyone could find. I do know how upsetting it is, but really, spotting is incredibly common.

HI

had bleeding and ache with DS1 at 7 weeks had a scan for eptopcic pregnancy was totally distraught, turned out to be a planting bleed with first pregnancy, try not to worry but do get it checked out do rest too !

olivo · 29/12/2005 05:01

thank you so much everyone, for your help and words of advice - you've no idea how much better it makes me feel. I hadnt thought about the implantation thing, I thought that happened at around 4 weeks. I'm trying to relax, it has not quite stopped but only a little bit there when I wipe today (sorry!). Reassuring, though, to hear it has happened to others who have had successful pgs.
thanks again.xx

I too had bleeding on and off with my second pregnancy at around this time. It sounds like a small amount now and so try and relax and stay positive. My dd2 is 6 months old now. Wishing you lots of luck. It is scary, but surprisingly common. My friend who had bleeding early on gave birth to her dd two weeks ago a very healthy 10 and a half lber.
Take care
