weight gain?

Hey so I'm 14 weeks pregnant, saw a midwife yesterday and she tested my wee and it said I had high amount of keratin I think it was tht in it. She said have I had severe morning sickness which I haven't even been sick. So she said I'm not eating enuf as the kerarin is my body taking its own fat to make energy cz nt gting it from food. I was underweight when I got pregnant, 7 stone 9. By 12 weeks pregnant I went up to 8 stone 3. Is that a healthy weight gain? She said I need to eat more but I have been, fair enuf not 3 meals a day but I hardly ate before I gt pregnant. So I have improved. There is the factor about gaining weight which does scare me, plz dnt judge, since having my first son I gained so much weight with him. 3 n half stone. I was majorly down so resulted in eatin max of 300calories a day. It all dropped off and now I am struggling to eat a lot mre and gain weight.

She also felt my belly and said baby was very small and my bump. Near enuf not existant for my second pregnancy was small.

I don't think it matters how much you weigh now, if you were underweight before falling pregnant then you need to gain more in your pregnancy to support the growing baby than someone of a normal weight. If your baby and bump are small then eat more and gain more weight. Isn't the health of your baby more important?I understand the nausea making it difficult but more nutritious snacks or higher calorie liquids might help. I think you have to concentrate your baby and not your waistline.

It would be ketones in your urine and this is not good. Simply you are not eating enough and your body is using muscle tissue and protein you eat for energy. Your baby needs these proteins to grow, hence small baby.

Thankyou. So what kind of food do you recommend? Like high protein and that for the baby. I am rly concerned with what she said. My scan at 12 weeks tho the baby was measuring exactly right for dates

If you have food issues then you need to address them. I had the same problem after having my son, I put on lots of weight and then PND hit and I basically starved myself down to ridiculous weight. Being in this mindest in pregnancy is dangerous. Speak truthfully to your midewife and she'll put you in touch with someone who can help. I got a call just this morning from the midwife who deals with mental health as my history is in my notes. Luckily I am fine now, but please do access the help that's available. Fwiw, even if you weren't pregnant I'd be advising the same thing. It's no way to live.

Thanku, I'm actually getting quite upset about it as I no I have a problem just dnt wna make it official. I no I need to do it though, for the sake of my baby, there's many time I thought I've had depression just never spoke to anyone about it. Me n my partner argue a lot and I regularly cnt sleep cnt eat and get to point I dnt see point to live. And always put my self down. I think I need to see someone x

I would see someone and get the help you need, gaining weight doesnt have to mean eating crap.

Tbh brutally honest the baby in all likelihood will not have a problem. It will suck all the goodness out of you to be healthy.

However, 3 months post-partum it'll be your hair & teeth which are falling out and your organs which will suffer the long-term damage never mind the wrinkles!

Lots in the news right now about osteoporosis - sounds pretty bloody grim - and nobody wants a mouth full of gaps when they're so young. :(

AlpinePony that may be true if mumt1 was a normal weight and eating well before the pregnancy. This was not the case. Babies need energy to grow and given that mumt1 has ketones in her urine signals that not enough energy is present, as does the small baby midwife showed concern over. Given the struggles mumt1 appears to be having regarding her mood, eating and self esteem I don't think your post is entirely helpful.

Mumt1 you need to ask your midwife for more support. There are people who can help who specialise in nutrition in pregnancy. To start off with I would eat small things regularly. Aim for every couple of hours and make sure you get a balance of protein carbohydrate and fat. All are needed by your growing baby and for you also. Calcium is also important as is having some fruit and vegetables but do not compromise your weight gain by using these to fill up on. Anything you can tolerate is a good start and things like yoghurt, nuts and seeds, cheese and biscuits, eggs and toast can be light and nutritious.

I have had major issues with eating in the past and am looking at my pregnancy as my chance to make things right. I could never live with myself if I harmed my baby in any way by restricting what I am eating. Neither could I bear the thought of passing on bad habits when they start to watch what I eat. Think beyond the present moment and beyond yourself. It's sounds harsh but it will help. I was told by a dietician, midwife and Obstetrician I should be trying to eat around 2200 calories per day. I too was slightly underweight before conceiving. This is difficult when you feel nauseous or are unused to eating proper meals but can be helped along by adding fruit juices and glasses of milk with your snacks.

Thankyou all! I feel very proud with myself. Been shopping and brought loads of fruit and yoghurts and vegetables. Just finished off a shephards pie, strawberry muller rice, with a glass of fruit juice and some milk. I have had trouble with milk giving me bad indigestions, my mum recommended trying skimmed milk as the fat cud cause indigestion as when I'm eating chips ect I'm gting indigestion and it went down a treat! Feels fine so will make sure to drink plenty of tht, might not have the fat but gt the calcium! :) thankyou all. Will definatly talk to my midwife at my 16 week appointment and ask about a nutritionist. Its hard to cook meals that my partner and my son will eat to. Partner is VERY fussy doesn't like fruit or veg!

Well done mumt1. Not all fats are culprits of indigestion. Olive oil, seeds and nuts might be good alternatives. Remember the balance of what you eat is important and getting something from each foodgroup (protein, fat, carbohydrate) at as many meals as possible is the ideal/ If you feel worried then contact your midwife sooner. Now is a very important time for the growth of your baby.

Be honest with your midwife and get some advice to help you eat enough. You will need to gain more than the average person and they should be keeping an eye on you. It's especially important to get enough protein and carbohydrates. Some fat as well is needed to help the absorbtion of vitamins.

If you can't eat enough at meals, have snacks like a bowl of cereal, dried fruit, nuts, smoothies etc. which are energy-rich but not junk.

mumt1 I wonder if this website is of any use to you. I had alot of therapy and it helps me sort stuff out in my head. Maybe a look through this would give you some guidance. Not at all placing any labels on you or suggesting you have an illness but it is still some thought provoking stuff.
