Baby hammocks

I'm debating using a baby hammock instead of a Moses basket/ crib. Just wondering if any one had used one before and if they would recommend. First baby and already having conflicting advice from friends. Thanks :) Clare xx

Hi I used a Nature's Sway hammock for my first baby and I can happily report that she LOVED it!! She slept like a dream from very early on, and combined with swaddling, I felt like she was cozy and snug and warm. If she grizzled after being put to bed we gently jiggled the hammock up and down for a minute or two and she always went right to sleep. She slept through from 7pm to 7am at 10 weeks (with one 10.30pm dreamfeed). I like the way the sides of the hammock come up to restrict their view so that all they see is the hammock. It kind of blocks out all the other distracting things going on in their line of vision.
Our DD stayed in the hammock for four months until she went into the cot. The hammock to cot transition was fine: we started using the cot for daytime naps first and then after a few weeks of that we put her in the big cot.
I've never heard ANYONE who's actually used a hammock diss them. People (usually MILs) are a bit funny about them because they're different to the norm, but I've had three friends use them and they have consistently reported excellent results. I'm expecting again in March and will be using the hammock again, for sure.

Thank you that's soooo helpful :) I am definitely swaying towards one. Good luck in your pregnancy x

This is interesting- I am thinking about getting a hammock as well- they look very comfy and womb like! Also might help stop my cat trying to sleep with the baby!

Babies really can't fall out can they?

I used an Amby Natures Nest last time and loved it so much I'm going to use it again this time. It's great because you can gently bounce baby to sleep and they're really portable too.

There have been some scare stories over them recently but I've done a fair bit of research and am happy that, used correctly, they're just as safe as any other cot. You can google "hammock recall USA" for more info but bare in mind that in both tragedies they describe the hammocks were used incorrectly. God, I'm not really selling this am I?

Like I said, I'm using one this time and really looking forward to it. Last time I got it at about 10 weeks and really wished I had it from the outset.

Might also try it with swaddling this time and cross my fingers for a baby that sleeps through from 3 weeks!...

Kiwiinkits where did you get your Nature's Sway hammock? did you buy the stand as well?

Another happy Amby hammock user here, all my 3 have slept in it well and safely, and a couple of friends who timed their babies well Grin in between (+1 friend who had to buy her own as her DS arrived too soon after my 3rd!). It will be in use again next year. All the advantages mentioned above really - easier to lug around than travelcot and baby in a familiar bed, snugger than a big cot, and it moves in such a comforting looking way - wish someone would make an adut version!
TBH PandH is the first I've heard of any babies hurt in them, (off to google now)

DM bought an Amby hammock for DS2, he slept in it from birth and loved it, had to finally switch to cot when he started to sit up, would highly recommend them.

Very vain but I also think they look gorgeous! Grin

We used an Amby with both DDs, and will try it again with DC3 in a few months time. Both DDs stayed in it until they went into their own bedroom at 6 months. DD1 adored it, DD2 liked it, but not as much as DD1 - not sure if its because she was a bit bigger. They do look lovely - we have the cream one - and they are fab for just folding down and taking away for holidays, weekends etc. Being able to gently rock or bounce them is nice too. Both DDs slept through from their 11pm / midnight feed to a normal waking up time, from very early on too - not sure if it was the bed, but I think it helped.

Will have to be the exception to the rule here... Got one (Amby) for DS because I'd totally fallen in love with the idea. For some reason though, he HATED it. He started grunting and angrily squirming every time I put him in there... Also, he was a terrible sleeper and I found it really fiddly to get him in and out of there every 40 mins through the night. After a couple of weeks, we ended up co-sleeping.

When he was a bit older though, I did manage to get him to take his naps in there (he was a terrible napper too) and we got the jump-jump attachment when he was 5 months and he loved it, would have probably happily spent most of the day hopping around in it. :)

Sold it on ebay once he started crawling and got bored with the jumping, and they do hold their value well, so don't regret buying one at all. DD will be arriving in a few weeks and I keep thinking about giving it another go...

Miau Mau I bought it off Trademe (kiwi version of ebay). We didnt' buy the stand at first, but later on we decided to use the hammock as our portacot and bought a stand too. At first when baby was tiny we just had the hammock hanging in our bedroom doorway, which was fine. The stands can take up a lot of room, that's one downside.

peasizedbladder · 27/10/2011 22:36

We've used our natures nest for both boys. Both slept very well in it, ds2 was awful once he went into his cot at 5 months (they say you can use them longer but both our boys didn't like it once they wanted to wriggle/turn over) but he had silent reflux so we were v grateful to have had some sleep initially! I will def be using it for the third.

The safety scare really is about not using it properly - use the whole kit, including the 'coat hanger' and you will be fine. I rang amby, the uk supplier. The deaths occurred when it wasnt used properly but they cannot publicise that for legal reasons!!! Once you have looked at one you will see what i mean.

Magnumwhite · 28/10/2011 08:28

our baby loved his Amby Hammock - hated sleeping in a moses basket.
He also had silent reflux so the ability to tilt up the hammock was great.
He transferred easily to a cot at 5 months when it became clear he wanted to turn over.
I also agonised over the 2 tragic American stories but as mentioned before these occurred when the hammock wasn't set up correctly - so please do read instructions carefully, ring the Amby UK website for advice on set up.
I personally wouldn't hang it from a door.
