Hi, am 34 weeks pg and really want to eat some homemade pesto, however it has unpastuerised parmesan in it, would you risk it or not?? Pg has been totally trouble free (so far!)
Thanks

Jamina · 22/10/2011 18:18

I didn't even know this and I eat pesto at least once a week, so reckon you will be fine x

TeacupTempest · 22/10/2011 18:36

I thought hard cheeses were ok so wouldn't have given it a second thought either...

billgrangersrisotto · 22/10/2011 18:44

Hard cheese is fine, as is any cooked cheese (even blue), which it will be if you're adding pesto to pasta. My god, it must have been a hard slog for you if you didn't know that.

Thank you! Grin pesto for tea it is!!

And you don't even need to cook blue cheese now for it to be safe!

Plus baked brie is safe as long as it is thoroughly cooked through.

I've been eating stilton and Shropshire Blue regularly since I found that one out (shame they hadn't changed the advice when I was pregnant with no. 1 five years ago).

NHS: cheese in pregnancy

icooksocks · 23/10/2011 21:23

You have actually made my day- I did not know Stilton was allowed Shock

naomi79 · 23/10/2011 22:38

What about prawns, I had them cooked for tea...

KatAndKit · 24/10/2011 09:20

If it is home made why don't you buy pasteurised parmesan cheese?

Anyway, surely you don't eat it cold? The heat kills all listeria germs so I wouldn't worry.

VikingLady · 27/10/2011 12:09

I thought all hard cheese was OK? I've had parmesan on everything! Baked potatoes, pasta, to pep up cheese on toast or tomato soup... Is it not OK, then?

Hell. How am I supposed to keep track? So much conflicting diet advice! [hconfused]

Bue · 27/10/2011 20:19

VikingLady, yes all hard cheese is completely, totally fine! OP was just confused. Eat away!

naomi79 · 27/10/2011 22:45

Some of the packaging on Parmesan state not suitable for pregnant women so had just wanted to check as know a lot are made with unpastuerised milk, but glad I now know if it's cooked it's ok...Grin

Was it Asda parmesan naomi? I've just seen online that they label theirs as such and it has confused loads of women - absolutely bonkers, they've got it wrong!

naomi79 · 29/10/2011 22:31

Yes it was!! Thanks for clearing that up Smile might ask them about why when i next go shopping!!

I would. I also chomped down a big prawn cocktail last night as I had a massive craving.
