Hi all. I got my positive result on Friday, I'm exactly 4 weeks today. However I have noticed that I am feeling extremely thirsty, particularly today. Had to drink 3.5 pints when I woke up this morning as I was so parched, and have continued to drink throughout the day whilst I've been at work. I've estimated I must've drunk around 4L so far today - and the day's not even over yet.

The first few hours of work involved fairly moderate exercise, the rest was only light. Dozed off for 2 hours and woke up completely parched.

I read that drinking too much too soon can actually have the opposite effect and make you worse since it can dilute the concentration of salts etc. in your body. Do you think this is what I've done (and should therefore try to slow it down a bit) or should I listen to my body and just drink what I want?

Already had a MC so don't want to do anything that could be harmful.

I was very thirsty in the beginning. Can't remember which weeks exactly. I think you have to listen to your body. Around week 17 I craved milk a lot. So I drank milk. Had the same with appele juice...

I understand you worry after a MC, but I don't think drinking a lot of water can do harm. And otherwise.... give the midwife a ring. Good luck and....congratulations with your pregnancy!!!!!

First of all congratulations Dizzy. Thirst and excessive peeing were my first siigns of pregnancy. They thought it was hilarious at work and I got the nickname 'Tenalady' [hblush]

It is true that too much water can dilute the concentration of salts in the body but I am sure your body knows what it's doing. However if you are worried or think you're craving excessively, a trip to the doctors can help. I was given dialyte (?) which increases electrolytes in the body and is safe to drink whilst pregnant.

My body behaved differently right from 5 weeks, I found it really hard to know what was normal or needed looking into further.

Dutchie milk and apple juice are my drinks of choice.

Thankyou both, I guess I will try not to worry too much and carry on as normal. I will still mention it to the doctor when I go for a checkup - first things first is actually registering with a doctor Blush

Dizzy it's understandable Smile xx

Also, I don't know if it's just something available in the west yorkshire area, but I could register with the midwife as soon as I realised I was pregnant.

As for registering with the doctor, you'll get a full MOT done at registration so it's fab timing really.

Another thirsty / peeing lady here - I was actually concerned I had diabetes before I did my pregnancy test.... ooops! Doctor told me was perfectly normal. Oh, and congratulations!

rodeoshoes · 16/10/2011 22:04

It's completely normal! Your body is busy making extra blood & later on amniotic fluid. My insatiable thirst started around 4 weeks & is still going strong at 16 weeks. Drank 5 litres of water the other day & didn't even pee that much!

casperella · 16/10/2011 22:35

I still have the unending thirst, and am over 19 weeks now. I have developed a hitherto undiscovered love affair for juicy ice lollies which seems to keep me feeling hydrated before I head off to bed.

DizzyKipper · 17/10/2011 06:17

Wow 5L - that does make me feel better thanks rodeo. Googled about this and found one woman querying it because she was only drinking 2L a day - was starting to make me feel abnormal. Kept waking up every 2 hours to drink last night though, hope this doesn't go on for too long Confused

It's insane isn't it! I find if I don't drink a bare min of 3L I get terrible dehydration headaches that are really hard to shift.

DizzyKipper · 17/10/2011 17:06

Yes it is insane. I've must've drunk at least 4L by now but my lips are actually getting very raw from my apparent lack of hydration, can't find the lip balm either, ouch!

DizzyKipper · 18/10/2011 06:54

Ok, and now I'm not. And now I'm worried about that! Drank at least 4L yesterday, maybe even 5L, and now I'm not thirsty? Did almost throw up though but don't know if that's down to my GERD or not. Pregnancy symptom come back!

rodeoshoes · 18/10/2011 22:01

I get the dry lips thing too! Lip balm doesn't help though. I won't worry you're most likely hydrated again.Wink I'd say the nearly puking is probably the start of morning sickness, especially if you have GERD. Mine started at 4 weeks & is still going strong Sad & I'm sure my digestive issues were to blame!

DizzyKipper · 19/10/2011 06:29

Thanks rodeo, me and OH are oddly enough keeping our fx for my nausea to get worst - we've heard that bad MS is linked with less likelihood of MC. Of course the best thing would be no MC and a happy healthy pregnancy, but we're still at the nail biting stage. How many weeks are you?

OP posts:
rodeoshoes · 19/10/2011 21:59

16 weeks now. The first 12 weeks are hard with no one knowing, the worry & constantly checking for bleeding every time you go to the loo! Although it would nice, it would also be weird to be symptom free. It does give reassurance it's all still all going the right way. Would quite like the nausea to go now though!
