Has anyone refused a GTT?

Hi,

Not sure what to do I had the GTT last time and it was horrific - I know it was 1/2 day but starving myself made me shaky and nauseous and it was quite frankly a waste of time and energy. They sent me because my BMI was high (it still is) and my mum had Type 2 (although it was steroid induced due to her myriad of other illnesses). My DS1 was born at 37 weeks weight 6lb 30z do they were concerned about him being small. I really don't want it this time what would you do.

BTW I am very active I have a 2year old at home which I look after 24/7 so no rest for the wicked.

My GTT was clear in my first pregnancy, and I almost didn't go for the one in my second pregnancy.

Good job I did because I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes, and had to modify my diet and monitor my blood sugar for the rest of my pregnancy.

I am so glad I found out, because DS2 was born healthy and completely well. I had no complications and didn't have to have any insulin or other medication.
I also hardly put on any weight during my pregnancy and I'm now slimmer and fitter than I've been for years - since long before I got pregnant with DS1.

Please think very carefully before you refuse it.

Frankly you would be an idiot to refuse one if you are offered. If you are at increased risk why would you not want to be tested. So you felt shaky for 1/2 a day, better than having GD and the consequences that go along with that for your baby.

I am genuinely shocked at your attitude.

Can't you just ask for an early appointment?! I had mine starting at 8.30 and there was nothing to it.

Please think very carefully before you refuse. My first baby was still born at 39 weeks, and they are 98% sure that I had undiagnosed gestational diabetes (he was a very big baby, much bigger than my subsequent 2, and they think he put on so much weight from my gestational diabetes that he outgrew the placenta). My case may be unusual, but would you want to take that risk?

I had a test got GD this summer although, like you, I had my doubts. I also felt ill and shakey for the rest of the day despite and early appointment and eating straight afterwards. I tested "normal".

This article was recommended to me and I found it very interesting in giving an alternative view point on GTT.

Henci Goer, the author of the article, seems to write lots on pregnancy and birth but backs it up with evidence which was something I was keen on rather than anecdotes.

Good luck, whatever you decide.
