39wks iron levels STILL falling, midwives making me v nervous...

am 39wks pg, and my iron levels -as per all my pregnancies- started to crash several weeks ago. took iron tablets which made me ill, normally these fix me in pregnany but not these (this is my fourth baby BTW) so took spa-tone, which didnt agree with me 100% but was miles better than crappy tablets.... iron levels re-tested and STILL falling, so put on ferrous tablets, double dosage.told to stop spa tone as not strong enough. iron retested and STILL 'very low', now on three doses a day of tablets and had to have a transfusion form added to my notes for any bleeding after birth.
I'm veggie, -BUT not normally low in iron, only when pg, am eating a good diet -researched EVERYTHING I could find with iron in and am eating it. (and sick to bloody death of OJ BTW) I dont drink tea anymore, I am doing all I can and still its not helping.
please can anyone advise me? I have a home birth booked, and whilst they are agreeing I can go on with that, they make big noises about transferring to hospital afterwards. and really they are scaring the heck out of me, with comments like 'two abnormally low reading in blood components' and the word blood tranfusion banded about. and they KEEP making it sound like my fault...I'm doing all I can tho.
obviously, THIS pg I'm not very 'thick skinned' and am taking all this badly to heart. is there something terrible wrong with me or this baby to make the levels keep falling?

i don't know very much about the subject, but am sure people like pupuce have posted in the past that low iron levels in late PG are a good sign, in that it shows baby is being efficient at taking nutrients etc from you. hope that someone a bit more knowledgable will be on soon to put your mind at ease. best of luck.

oh, I'd never thought of it like that, thanks. I'm abit cranky being this far pg and more than abit stressed out. that 'new light' on it really helped.

What are your iron levels, out of interest?

dramaqueen72 · 20/12/2005 10:42

well they were 95 two weeks ago. I dont know what they are now aside from 'still dangerous and low' (WHY do they ahve to use words like that) I think they like them to be over 120 dont they?

there would be no harm in taking spatone(two sachet a day)on top of the tablets.i wouldnt stop them.

dramaqueen72 · 20/12/2005 11:14

I was told to take 3 spatone/day, although my levels kept falling too (no lower than 9.2 tho). Have you tried fluradix?

The anaemia can make you v tired and wobbly which combined with late pregnancy and Christmas preparations is enough to make anyone feel crummy! It's you that's peaky tho, not the baby

They can give you IV iron (I think) but apparently it's not v nice.
