Maternity wear for chubbers.

I am not at that stage yet, I am only just coming up 13 weeks. But I can feel my jeans getting quite snug so I thought I would look around. A lot of it seems to be only in small and average sizes. My arse has expanded to an 18 even before I got pregnant. Any recommendations for nice but not too expensive stuff that won't make me look like a giant blob?

I'm very lazy, so I kept wearing the old stuff with the button/zip undone (hair elastic stretched across to stop it bagging out), with the addition of braces (I couldn't stand waistbands past about 25 weeks) and long vests (to cover the gaps. The one pair of maternity trousers I tried was useless, and wouldn't stay up (my generous thighs kept pulling them down)

I did find that those peasant style gathered neck/waistband that can lodge under your bump very useful for more formal-type occasions - but I'm very short, I imagine that for taller people they might not be long enough to hook under..

anon2011 · 04/10/2011 12:02

I thought this threas was "maternity wear for clubbers"! New Look do a good maternity range. Variable quality but inexpensive/

kat2504 · 04/10/2011 12:04

Thanks! I had thought that stretchy waistbands would be the way forward, but I hadn't thought of them being annoying on the bump.

Clubbing?! No chance. I find it hard to stay up past 10 at the moment!

chubbers? If thats what you think of people who are size 18+ then its not clothes advice you need.

anon2011 · 04/10/2011 12:07
Hmm
kat2504 · 04/10/2011 12:07

Oh come on get a sense of humour, it is myself I was talking about after all and I know, given a bmi of 31, that I am in fact a bit too plump for my height. No negative judgement of anyone else was meant ffs. I was being lighthearted.

OP posts:
sleepevader · 04/10/2011 12:10

Its actually really offensive. You can use the line its myself I was talking about but by posting it on an open forum you are actually calling everyone else who are size 18+ chubbers.

kat2504 · 04/10/2011 12:12

Right I can't be arsed having an argument with you about this. If you don't like it please ignore. I am quite aware that I am, medically speaking, obese. I am sure other fat people are also aware that they are fat. I didn't start this thread to get into some sort of petty political correctness bunfight.

I am about 11 weeks at the moment and my BMI is 27 (ish). I've never been under 25 BMI anyway (even when I thought I was fairly slim). I've got massive gazongs and I'm sure this racks my weight up :). However, I digress. Dorothy Perkins have a great range called "Purple" and they do really funky "cover all your lumps and bumps" tunic tops. What's more, they are super comfy. Reasonably priced too.

kat2504 · 04/10/2011 12:22

Thanks for that. My DP doesn't have that range I don't think (small shop) but I will have a look at their website. If I get a tunic top I can do the elastic band thing on my jeans for a few weeks.

Oops, someone's got ishoos! Op, as a fellow pg chubber, I can really recommend new look's dark bootcut jeans, over the bump, 15 quid a pair, and quite unbelievably flattering to the arse. Incredibly comfy. This us my third dc, and the first time ever I've had really comfy jeans. I just west them with normal long tunic-y tops.

DorcasGailen · 04/10/2011 12:23

I am an 18+ and quite happy with the term chubbers! Cant see anything wrong with that at all!
Kat I am busting out of all of my clothes now, even my fat jeans at 17 weeks! Where I live is very hot so living in floaty dresses and PJ's. Am heading back to the UK in Dec/Jan so will need to buy a few items of maternity winter wear. I have looked online at Next but there stuff seems a bit tight and I would prefer baggy and loose! Dotty Perkins also has a few things but if you do find anywhere good please post so I can head there straight from the airport! (I dont even own a coat here!)

ChineapplePunk · 04/10/2011 12:25

I've got one with a big yellow butterfly on it and my other half refers to it as "my Silence of the Lambs" top. Not sure how I feel about that :)

sleepevader · 04/10/2011 12:28

No I dont have issues thanks. I just dont appreciate playground names being assigned to people who are 18+ particularly when pregnant. Isnt it hard enough with medical professionals using it as a stick to beat you with than fellow women labelling you as chubbers and fat.

kat2504 · 04/10/2011 12:31

I find Next tight in the thigh at the best of times. I can't fit in a standard next trouser. Jeans for 15 pounds sounds good. Not sure if I am ready for the big elastic panel yet but if they are that cheap it might be worth getting them in ready for a months time.
I don't have that many tunic tops as my waist and top half is generally my redeeming (or least fat) area but I shall be looking out for them.

rathlin · 04/10/2011 12:36

But size 18 is fat - it's not labelling anyone with anything, it's a fact. It's quite clear that the OP was only joking using the term "chubber". I use it myself about myself although not about others. Lighten up!

themightyskim · 04/10/2011 12:39

I saw a really nice maternity range for 18+ the other week and its bugging the life out of me that cant think of where - I want to say new look to be honest but ill keep thinking, and as for next I cant fit my thights in their stuff ever, I have a size 12 waist and size 14- 16 thighs, clothes are not my friends - even less so now as I'm pregnant

And again Im not trying to start rows or anything I know we are all hormonal wrecks at the moment but I affectionately refer to myself as chubs I honestly dont even think of it as a 'fat' term, we are all chubby with baby- to me that just means carrying a bit more weight Im sorry people are upset by that term :(

EsmeWeatherwax · 04/10/2011 12:44

I keep tunic tops quite close fitting over the boobs and then flaring out over the tummy, empire line type of thing. Lol, no sacks! I've also got a pair of under bump jeans from nl didn't mention them cos they're not quite as comfy for me, but probably cos of previous c-sections.

kat2504 · 04/10/2011 12:47

DP website is looking fab, and goes up to size 22! Shame they don't sell the maternity in the shop near me, but I suppose I can just order online and send back what doesn't fit. Thanks for the tip. Cant get new look site to work.

themightyskim · 04/10/2011 12:51

Dots have a returns service that you can use that allows you to get a number and then local newsagents in your area take the parcels back, really easy rather than queuing in post offices and they do seem to have a good range

Im looking at empire line dresses at the moment everything annoys my bump! Asda have a lot of nice tops and dresses that are cheap and will double up as mat wear, im almost certain they go to a size 24 and you can order from George online and get stuff delivered to your local store for free :)

Iggly · 04/10/2011 12:55

What about leggings and long dresses to cover your backside and thighs? Plus heaps more comfy than jeans - even maternity ones cut into my stomach.

charlatan · 04/10/2011 12:59

Trousers or jeans with big stretchy over the bump panels are definitely the most comfortable type. They feel like they are being supportive too. Under the bump to me always felt like they were falling down! Also leggings that go right up over the bump are good with long tops or dresses. I got some from Peacocks.

kat2504 · 04/10/2011 13:01

Peacocks? Have never seen maternity in there. This is what happens when you live in a small town and all the shops are like mini-branches. I might try leggings. I definitely don't have the legs for them but with a long enough dress it might work.

ASOS seems to have sales on their maternity clothes quite often, although they sell out of ,some sizes. Check out the outlet/clearance bit on their website. They do free delivery and returns. I got a couple of pairs of lovely comfy linen trousers for about £8 each. I'm 16/18 (well 18 on my fat arse!) and the XL seems to fit fine, a bit loose. The L was a bit snug!

RubyLovesMayMay · 04/10/2011 16:55

I second Peacocks! Im a size 16 now at 12 weeks so can almost guarantee I'll be at least a size 18 in something Grin

I bought a pair of grey training pants from there in my 1st pregnancy which I have been wearing long after my pregnancy they were pretty cheap. Dunno what the Peacocks website is like though.
