I know this may seem like a weird question but I may be pregnant with baby number 4 and when I think about my friends, collegues and people at school in this day and age do people actually have more than 3 children? I only know of one woman with 4 kids and she is a single mum. I know you shouldnt worry what others think and think more of what my other 3 kids think but people are very judgemental these days. I am one of 4 and so is my hubby but does anyone else out there have a large family coz I only ever hear bad things about big families and I want to continue working part time and not be one of these statistics. I admire anyone who has a large family and would love to hear what people think and whether I am just being silly :D

Oh dear - were in a 2 bed flat with 2 box rooms - capital city centre living though - not at all ideal for our 3 plus imminent one. Once we get through the childcare pain, we'll work on financing the big house then well work on how we pay something towards uni then pensions, then nursing homes - but with 4 boys I'm hoping they'll start helping me a bit at that end of lifeWink

I would only expect the seriously rich to have 4+ kids, given the time and money it must involve! I would never ever want that myself but each to their own. I know a couple of large families and they are very happy indeed - looks like fun.

Instinctively I do think more than 2 kids is not doing the planet any favours, but then if you were that serious about overpopulation, you couldn't justify having any kids at all!

I am pregnant with number 4 - never thought I'd have that many - I am one of 2. But DH is one of 4 and he sneaked the 4th one in! We have a 4 bedroom house now but did have 3 in a 2 bed flat. It was fine. All 3 still share room (DD1 is 7, DS is 6 and DD2 is 3) - and don't want that to change yet. Not that much more expensive - DD2 wears hand me downs from her brother and sister and we grow lots of food. And already have a big enough car. I know 5 families with 4, 2 with 5, one with 6 and one with 8 kids. None of them single parents although some with half brothers and sisters. I know LOADS of families with 3. Not many with only 1. 3 seems the most common in these parts. But we do live in a rural area where schools are closing due to a very real lack of children to fill them so people have a different perspective re overcrowding etc - repopulating is more normal!

Two sets of twins here!

Insanitybecomesme · 28/09/2011 23:36

I have 6dc ages 11, 10, 5, 3 and twins of 20 months we planned for 5 but twins meant 6, there are a couple of families at school that have the same as us and one that has 8 I think.

MindtheGappp · 28/09/2011 23:44

I have five children, all to same father. And we were married before the first child was conceived and still married today.

We are not all 4x4s

Insanitybecomesme · 28/09/2011 23:49

Mindthegappp, the same is true here married at 22 first child just before 25 last children at 35 still married and intend for it to stay that way.

DC4 on the way here also. I am pretty rare here and only know of a couple of other with 4 - but I am in inner London. I was chatting to a friend the other day who, like many, are amazed at the 4-kid thing. I don't know anyone else personally with four though. I am a bit of a talking point locally I think... Lots of one-child families here, some two, not very many three... It is only difficult from the point of view that noone can really appreciate the difficultly with, say, three kids at the park aged 4, 3 and 1 and chasing after them while pregnant! This is it for me though!!!

pinkytheshrinky · 29/09/2011 06:57

I have 4 children (growing number 5) , I have 3 friends with 5 and one friend with 7... all nice people

lollystix · 29/09/2011 08:42

Imip - we meet again. I'm in central Edinburgh. Thought of moving out to suburbia terrifies me but I know our living situation is a bit impractical. Perhaps lIke you my kids are very 'urban' - mini micros everywhere. I do feel like cos were in a built up area were a bit more 'noticeable' especially since mine are all boys - no.4 will be a boy too. 3 weeks to go now. So bored!

tummytickler · 29/09/2011 09:21

We have 4 and ttc5 (and then possibly 6). We are certainly not seriously rich, but we get by, and make life good for ourselves (and we sometimes struggle with the pennies, but it is no bad thing to teach the children that sometimes they have to wait to do what they want).
I am not concerned about putting them through uni, they will put themselves through uni just like dh and I did, although we will give them some money to help out. They will just have to pay back a student loan, and we help them when we can!
i know somebody with 7, somebody with 5, and lots with 4 (10+ - loads!).
I am a SAHM, but was working until last year, but it was too much for the family to take, and giving up work was the best thing i have done, we are poorer for it, but life is not all about money.
Same Dad, married, 3 bed house but very large garden is a quiet town (hope to move maybe next year to my home village but v v expensive!)

spookshowangellovesit · 29/09/2011 10:34

I have four and know of lots of families who have 4. It's manic, chaotic etc.

But I love it Wink

Most of the time.

graciousenid · 29/09/2011 14:39

Yes Grin I have four which is just about average amongst my group of friends - two are pregnant at the moment, one with number six the other with her fourth, the two most recent babies were a number six, number five & number four (my ds). I love it :)

DizzyCow63 · 29/09/2011 14:52

I would absolutely love four (DSD is 13, DS1 is 23wks) but I couldn't endure another pg. After 4 years ttc no 1, I never thought I would say that, but it was horrendous. If someone could just hand me the newborn every few years then yes please, otherwise I'm done Sad

harrygracejessica · 29/09/2011 21:06

2 sets of twins here too and a singleton so its not like i planned to have 5 lol

TooImmature2BDumbledore · 29/09/2011 21:18

Well, Dad has 5, but with two different women and an 18 year gap between first lot and second lot.

I know a girl who is one of 17! No kidding. Her dad had 6, her mum had 10 and then they had her together. She was the only child they had together, mind you, and she was a lot younger than most of the others.
