For baby stuff, I like Penelope Leach, 'The Essential First Year'. Can't stand the What to Expect pregnancy book - it is sooooo patronising and unhelpfully cheery about every problem you could ever have.

Just found out I'm pregnant for the first time (have 2 DSS's with my DP). I read Mel Giedroyc's "From Here to Maternity" a few years ago which her prenancy memoir - might dig it out for a laugh again while I'm fretting about the 1st meeting with the midwife...

A Mum lent me "Babies for Beginners" by Roni Jay. I was very impressed. It has the basic stuff you don't know yet - how to change a nappy, what the story is with wind, and so on. The level of advice given is the advice of someone who has had a baby, no particular expertise or system is professed. It gives good supportive humorous basics and approaches childcare as if it's quite easy. "What to expect" give the impression it's actually pretty hard. It might not take you far if you need advice beyond the first few weeks, but you never know, it might be enough!

If you're thinking of breastfeeding and possibly co-sleeping then "3 in a bed" by Deborah Jackson is amazing!

I read it as I was beginning to co-sleep (by accident, a lot of breastfeeding mums end up bed sharing ) and wanted to do it safely but the book changed my whole outlook. It was brilliant about bonding with babies, breastfeeding, being a mother, parenting styles etc.

I am looking for some advice, my wife and I are both American citizens. We currently live in London.

My wife is pregnant around 5 weeks. We are thinking about moving back to the US to have the baby. At the current moment, we are trying to get our jobs to transfer us. I wanted to see if anyone has been in a similar situation and advice.

As mentioned a bit higher up, first time parent by Lucy Atkins was great for me. Pretty much dipped into it regularly during dd's first year. Had great info as well about preparing for the baby. Not preachy and makes you feel better reading it.
I remember looking at the 16 reasons the baby might be crying section in the early days with my mega colicky baby, helped my sanity along with google and mumsnet!
