Non 'girly' baby girls clothes

We've just found out we're having a little girl, which is wonderful, but the issue is that neither DP or me are big fans of overly 'girly' girls clothes - by which I mean we don't want to overdose on pink, or flowers, or frills and bows, or anything that says 'princess' (apologies to everyone who likes this style, I'm really not judging!). However, I know with babies you do need a degree of 'colour-coding' when they are little so I don't want to dress her in blues and greens and confuse everyone! Grin

Does anyone have any suggestions of good (and relatively inexpensive) places to shop that have a good range of baby girls clothes in reds, lilacs, yellows etc?

Another vote for H&M!!! Not girly at all.

Polarn O Pyret. Swedish. Expensive - ish. Lovely stripy baby gros and leggings etc. They are now online so do a search - lovely lovely lovely.

But don't buy much. People seem to be extra generous when buying new baby gifts and you'll probably be bought loads of teeny things

We're also having a girl and I don't like pink girly stuff, so I've been on the hunt for non-girly baby clothes but ones that that don't scream 'boy'.

John Lewis has a 5 pack of babygrows in primary colours, which are good value. www.johnlewis.com/252180/Product.aspx

Plus some other stuff that's not too girly

Thanks everyone for the recommendations, will definitely check out M&S and H&M, they are within budget for the early days - though, Bleugh, that's good advice, I'll leave the really nice clothes for everyone else to buy as presents!

Very reassuring to hear that we're not the only couple who don't particularly want to dress out little girl as Mummy's/Daddy's little princess!

It's worth a regular root in TK Maxx (if you can be bothered!) as they often have interesting quirky stuff, in amongst the blancmange horrors! Another H&M vote here too.

I detest pale/pastel pink with a fiery hatred.I can cope with flashes of a bright cerise or fuscia pink, but not insipid vomit inducing baby or barbie pinks . There are such nicer colours - browns, lime, teal, purple, orange etc!

For this reason i buy all the clothes for 'our house' for my DSD, as she arrives in glittery princess crap (which goes back washed and immaculate).

I am going to be asking everyone, very nicely, that if this baby is a girl to please not to get any pink stuff. I'm not a pretty pink person myself (I like metal and have a motorbike Grin), so why would I want to dress a daughter in it?!

My DC3 (girl) is due in a few wks & she is going to spend the first 6months of her life dressed in mothercare white fluffy terry towelling babygro's! I just love babygro's on babies (hate seeing a 6wk old dressed in denim jeans & mini trainers - sorry to offend anyone!). And I just know that all my friends will buy the girly girl pink stuff anyway, so I figure you might as well just save £££ & buy plain white basics instead - easy to wash, easy to dress - and they can be 'accessorised' with all the pink stuff your family & friends will no doubt buy you!

Okaidi in Belfast, Lisburn , Newry & Dublin are closing down on the 25th September (this weekend) They are a french kids clothing company; really nice innocent looking clothes; nothing too girly. Maybe get a bargain or two?
Its a shame they are closing as we don't have so much choice in Northern Ireland for baby / kids stuff.

pinkhyena · 22/09/2011 20:30

Ooh I agree with h&m. They do some lovely, quirky stuff.

scarlettsmummy2 · 22/09/2011 22:29

misslavery- that is a real shame! I haven't really seen anything comparable. I live in Edinburgh and love shopping there when I am at home. I have just phoned my mum to tell her to make sure she goes in tomorrow and stocks up!! I had my eye on a couple of little grey and pink dresses, with co-ordinating hats and scarfs for winter!

I got a couple of pretty blue and green dresses from BHS. Not really inexpensive though.
