My oven needs cleaning.

Desperately! Everytime I use it the smoke and smell of burnt is horrendous.

DH says I shouldn't do it because I'm pregnant and the chemicals are too strong. But isn't all this smoke a bit toxic too? So the question is are there any pregnancy friendly oven cleaning methods out there? Should I just do it anyway?

Yes - you can do it with bicarbonate of soda.

HOWEVER
If your DH is telling you not to do it, why not get him to do it instead? ;)

SurprisEs · 19/09/2011 18:48

I must say DH does a lot of the house work. But I jaw become unemployed in the last 2 weeks and he has been having to work around 55-60 hrs per week to keep up with the bills, so I'm trying not to ask him to do much at home.

Thanks for the suggestion. Will be checking the link right after this reply.

I get my mum to do mine, should I send her round? :)

SurprisEs · 19/09/2011 18:55

Crosshair that sounds even more appealing than bicarbonate of soda! Send her over and I'll cook her something in return.

oven cleaning is the worst job ever. get these people to do it for you - best £40 I've ever spent... www.ovenclean.com/ ...they use non-smelly chemicals and will do things like replacing the seal/lightbulb etc.

dizzy77 · 19/09/2011 19:59

I got DH to do it.

VagosaurusRex · 19/09/2011 20:08

What? Ovens need cleaning? Next thing you'll be telling me fridges, microwaves and under the sink areas also need to be cleaned! Perish the thought!

Crosshair · 19/09/2011 20:13

I actually have some bicarbonate of soda in my fridge as some parsley died in there and the smell will not shift. Blush

SurprisEs · 19/09/2011 20:15

Vagiusaurusrex. Hahaha very funny. I have cleaned an oven before. Just wasn't sure if it was safe to do during pregnancy and if there was a less toxic way of doing it. No need for the sarcasm.

I wasn't being sarcastic! Honestly, I have never cleaned my oven. (My husband may have done, though I can't be sure. I think he cleans the fridge and microwave too when he does the washing up.)

SurprisEs · 19/09/2011 20:47

Vagosaurousrex. Sorry if I misunderstood, it just came across as very sarcastic. Never mind.

Oven pride is fab. No fumes at all.

Yogiandyak · 22/09/2011 09:34

Washing powder works a treat!!

featherbag · 22/09/2011 11:16

I was extremely pleased when I found out oven cleaners are too fumey for a pregnant woman to use, DH now understands why I used to get cross when he didn't clean up spills straight away if he was getting something out of the oven!

lynniep · 22/09/2011 11:17

I had mr oven cleaner man in last year. it was my birthday present. and it was once of the best presents I've had. 50 quid very well spent. I dont care if you think I'm a saddo :)

Sandra2011 · 22/09/2011 12:21

I bought some amazing oven cleaner stuff from Lakelands and it was so easy for my husband to clean the oven.

NewEsherMum · 05/11/2011 11:39

I was worried about the toxic fumes etc too with the family and kids being around, so I found a great company that uses 100% green products - no fumes and I could use the oven straight away myovencleaner.co.uk/ . It was about £40 and took around one and a half hours. The best bit was - apart from a squeaky clean shiny oven - they left the area around cleaner and tidier than it was when they arrived :)
