Hi,I've got ulcerative colitis, had it for a few years now. Am 35wks and have been fine during pregnancy until last week or so when I seem to have had a flare up. Have been to GP and told midwife and they tell me that the baby will be fine as long as i keep drinking plenty fluids and eating. However I am still worried and just wondered if anyone has experienced the same thing? And to reassure me!

sorry - hope you're feeling ok.

my sil has it but she got it in her 40's - she had some quite bad times with it and a few internal investigations, had to take steriods - not very pleasant. Happily she seems to have been free of it for very many years now

I'm ok thanks, compared to other times its flared up, it has been really bad in the past and probaby had all the same investigations as your sil. I'm jusdt worried that it might affect the baby in some way but the doctors don't seem too botherd by it. So should probably just relax!Easier said than done tho!

hi I have Crohn's rather than UC but similar - mine flared up early in preg and I was on steriods all the way through, no probs with dd! Maybe they should give you a low dose of prednisolone?

Hi
Sorry to hear you are suffering with this. My ds had it at 9 weeks and the poor mite was in a right state. Can you control it with diet at all?

You certainly have my sympathies and I hope you get some good advice from fellow sufferers.

MistleToo · 13/12/2005 15:13

my sil was told it was nothing to do with diet - don't know how true that is though!

SilentBite · 13/12/2005 15:17

9 weeks? Blimey poor little thing.

I thought you couldn't get that or Crohn's so young

starkar · 13/12/2005 15:20

I have managed to control it with diet, for the last year or so plus herbal and homeopathic medication. I couldn't take some of the herbal things while pregnant tho and think thats why its flared. My Gp didn't want to put me on steroids but am being referred to consultant so maybe he will.
Mistletoo-I was advised on my diet by Jan De Vries he practices in alternative medicine, he told me to cut out cheese, milk, pork and citrus fruits, But you can have cottage cheese and goats and sheeps cheese and milk, so maybe your sil could try that.

Yep he had it alright, I was told for 4 weeks by my health visitor that he was just a very demanding baby but after 4 days of blood filled nappies of screaming morning, noon and night, I went to the hospital's children's ward and told them I would stay and sleep there until he was seen - he was and is fine now - thank god.

I was also going to suggest Homeopathy for you starkar.

Poor wee thing, its amazing how things like that are so easily dismissed by docs etc. Especially a baby! I was diagnosed when i was 18 but had to go through losing 3 stone and being incredibly ill before the doctors decided i should go to hospital, was a nightmare.I would definetly reccomend JAn De Vries he has clinics all over the UK, I had never felt better after seeing him, he really knows what hes talking about.

Wow scary

I was diagnosed at 22 and got down to 6 stone before they got me into hospital!

So meggymoo do they say that it was a one off episode (is that possible with an autoimmune disease?) Sorry I am v interested as I had this conversation with a Paed who said that he had never heard of Crohn's and UC in a child younger than 6

dingdongmeggymooonhigh · 13/12/2005 15:36

Yes SB they were very intrigued at the hospital and have never seen anything like it - which made them think it was something else. UC was put on his notes and with the GP too. He had to have an endoscopy - Dh had to go with him as I was broken hearted and couldn't stand seeing him like that. He was severely allergic to his milk at the time.
