formula feed... the flask method

Hey girls

I am going to try a bf but if I can't I just wanted to get making up formula straight in my head.

I just wanted to know how many of you use the flask method that is mentioned on the governments website for making fresh feeds?

My question is... do you still have to wait for the water to cool a little before putting in the flask, then how long does it stay above 70 degrees for?

Or... do you put the boiling water in the flask, and hopefully its cooled down a little to use to make up the feed?

Yes Fraktious, that's why I agree with you on the making the bottles in advance and putting them in the fridge!

Dialformummy Oh God yes, I have had to do it, well, I ended up using cartons because it is virtually impossible to follow those guidelines. I meant the temperature part of the guidelines. I ended up making a couple every few hours and storing them in the fridge or using cartons. The reason that I followed the instructions about the temperature is that the guidelines had changed between my 2nd and 3rd, so I looked into the reasons why. Apparently several babies in Iceland and also in France actually died due to becoming ill, and the bacteria that caused the illness was found in the milk powder. Once I had read that I felt compelled to reduce the risk.

Hope I won't have to mess round with formula this time but with DS1 I would make up the formula with 1/3 boiling water, mix and then add 2/3 tap water (can't remember at what age but health visitor had already said he was old enough for tap water) That way formula should have had bugs killed but you don't need to hang around. And I guess for a younger baby you could use pre boiled cooled water.

Does this sound safe? I have no idea how I would ever cope having to boil a kettle then wait for it to cool several times a night.....

We had to replace our kettle shortly after DS was born and found a Bosch one where you can select the temperature: so, we "boil" it to 80C (sterilisation point) and make the formula up with water straight from that. It's great as before we got this found we were boiling the kettle then loosing track of the 20mins cooling time and having to start over. It's a bit extreme and potentially expensive if you don't need a new kettle (or want to spend £50 on one) but has been a sanity preserver for us.
