General anaesthetic when pregnant

I can't find this subject on the boards and am hoping some of you may know what the risks are of having a general anaesthetic when pregnant. I may be (unexpectedly) 5 or 9 weeks pregnant - not quite sure how it happened, and had a ga 3 weeks ago. Should I be worried?

Do you mean 5 or 9 weeks after your period was due (ie 9 or 14 weeks pregnant?) If you're 5 weeks pregnant (ie 1 weeks after period due) then the GA will have made no difference as it would have been before you got pregnant. Otherwise I would ring your GP/antenatal clinic to ask. I wuold guess that the main danger would be miscarriage so if the pregnany has continued then all should be fine. Do ask for more information though- and an early scan if you are worried (I was given scans at 6 and 8 weeks during my pregnancy following a m/c- they said they provided them for reassurance- so I'm sure they could scan you early)

My period is 10 days late. Last period beginning of September but I just can't work out how I got pregnant between then and the ga. (Previous period was a bit funny so possibly fell pregnant in August) Also definitely not pregnant after ga - that would be an immaculate conception! I'm all confused with those dates now though.

Wouldn't worry about it at all. General anaesthetic would not make a difference to pregnancy at all.

My friend had an appendectomy when she was 3 months pg and it was all fine. If you are concerned do talk to your gp.

Oh and congatulations!

Thanks! I'm a bit shocked actually as although we had been trying for a little while we had deliberately "made sure" I would not get pregnant before the op. (Puzzled smiley needed here!)

SHouldn't be a problem if you are still OK now. There is very little effect on the baby from an anaesthetic. I'm having one on Thursday and I'm almost 32 weeks (its a very necessary op!) and the anaesthetist is very laid back about it. Hope everything is OK.
