'bright bowel' in 20 week scan - anyone else experienced this?

Not me who's PG but relative. They have all the info re it could be x,y etc and we will do following tests.

Just wondered if anyone else experienced this? What was the outcome and interested if it ever means 'nothing' in the long term?

Is that the same as echogenic bowel? We had this on 20 week scan with ds1. Had blood tests which all came back negative fortunately and gradually it disappeared as ds1 grew in the womb. He is now 2 and fine.
Hope everything turns out ok, it was a v worrying time until we got our results.

Think so.

I know CF has been suggested and tests on mum are underway.

I'm glad yours turned out OK, and I'm sure he's testing you in other ways now he's 2yo. Grin

I'm glad to hear of 1 case where it turned out to be 'nothing' iyswim?

Hi yes we had the same with DS, had a horrible 2 weeks while they did the CF tests, but thankfully all worked out fine and he just turned 4. If you search on echonegic bowel you will find a few threads on this topic. Good luck to your relatives x

Just wanted to add another one who had this with DS2 at his 20-week scan. Had tests for CF etc and a further scan with the consultant a few days later to check his development in more detail (had the scan on a Friday and the next one the following Tuesday and unfortunately it was DS1's 2nd birthday over that weekend so not great timing as it did cast a slight shadow over the weekend). Everything was fine, all tests came back negative.....and no-one ever mentioned it again Hmm

Ds2 was born perfectly healthy and the doctor in the hospital was not remotely interested in the 'echogenic bowel' issue!! He is now nearly 3 and has had no health problems at all.

Most common reason from what I was told/researched is that if the mum has a bleed during pregnancy the baby may swallow the blood and it just sits in their digestive system and shows up as 'bright bowel' - the mum doesn't even necessarily know she 'bled'.

Hope everything is ok and try and tell your relative not to worry!

Yes that's I heard the same explanation about a possible bleed. Hope it all turns out ok for your relative Smile

May be possible bleed. My relative has been really ill (not pg related as we can tell) but I suppose it may be related?

Thanks for all these positive stories. It would be lovely if my rele wants to talk about it to point her towards positive stories.

Thing that worries me about doing that though is if hers isn't positive it may make her feel worse? Sad

It must be difficult to know what to say. For us i tried to think positively about having a baby with CF if that's what was going to happen. TBH nothing you say will probably make too much difference until the blood tests are back. It's one of those horrible times when you are having to wait for news. Once your relative knows the result then they can focus on what it means for the future if needed. Am keeping my fingers crossed for your relative that all is ok. If it isn't the hospital should provide lots of information about any options they may have.

Thanks wheels. They are positive in a strange way. Even if it turns out to be CF they know things are better medication/ treatment wise than they were say 10 years ago and medicine is always advancing.

They found out the sex of the baby at this scan so there's lot's of positive talk about that.

I'll update if and when I have news.

Good news CF tests came back negative for female reletive being a carrier. Grin

Scan next week and they will take it from there.

A friend had this in her last preg, they went through several horrible weeks of having tests for different things and then was told something about bleeding in preg which she had no knowledge of , but in the end they were given the all clear and babe was born perfectly healthy and is four now and is absolutely fine, can't remember all the specific names of tests , but she was told that bright bowel is only being noticed so much these days because technology has advanced so much and that years ago it wasn't even picked up and that alot of times it turns out to to nothing to worry about
