Hi
I live in Turkey and I am 26 weeks pregnant. From what I know it really depends on the hospital you use. I use the local prıvate hospital, all the normal pain relief is available and you are encouraged to have someone with you. It used to be that most people giving birth here had an elcs, however the goverment is now encouraging hospitals to promote natural births. All in all my hospital care has been great and I am more than happy with it.

However... From what I know this is not the case if you use the state hospitals. Care there is very basic and you will not be allowed anyone in with you .
Where abouts in Turkey are you ?

Shock So pleased I am not living in Turkey!

Apart from the heat ,I have loved being pregnant here. I see the same doctor every time, I get scans which are 4d every month and if ever I have any worries (which as I have had a couple of miscarriages in the past , I Have a lot of) I just pop into hospital and see my doctor .
Unfortunatley I have to return to the Uk in 4 weeks time, I am holiday rep and as my contract is only for seasonal work , I dont stay here in the winter. However if I was staying here, I would me more than happy to give birth here.
After the horror stories I have read on here about the NHS, I am dreading going home.
If you fancy a chat @justme, send me a message .

turkishbaby your care in Turkey is that good because you are paying for care in a private hospital!!
I'm sure if you paid for private care here in the UK it would be just as good if not better.
Can't really compare having a baby on the NHS to having a baby in a room on your own with only an epidural for pain relief in Turkey!!!! Shock

turkishbaby · 25/08/2011 14:45

Hi @just me. I am in Marmaris and I go to the Ahu Hetman hospital. I also know people who have given birth in Mugla , Izmir and Denizli and have all had excellent care. But again the have all used private hospitals as most people here do. I will pm you when I get home from work.
Renaıssance227, using private hospitals here are not a big thing, we pay insurance from our salaries and that covers the cost, or a least the biggest part of it, in the same way in the uk we pay NI to pay for the NHS. And you are not left alone, you would have a doctor with you and they usually allow a woman in with you. They just dont believe that men should be present at the birth . I want my OH with me and he is horrified by the idea !

I lived in Turkey for a long time and had many friends (both British ex-pats and Turkish) who gave birth in Turkey. Turkishbaby is right, almost everyone has elective caesarians there - it costs around £400 for a caesarian at a private hospital. Care is superb - scans every 3 weeks during the pregnancy (costing the equivalant of £25 each) and any and every test available, with results usually on the same day.

My friends all gave birth at a private hospital in Fethiye called Esnaf. One or two chose a natural birth, but gas and air was available, as was pethidine. Husbands were allowed in - maybe in rural areas it would be a bit shocking for the staff to have a husband want to be in the delivery room, but not in the very modern West of Turkey these days.

My advice is to visit each hospital you are considering and actually ask the questions - Esnaf (if you are within an hour or so of Fethiye) have a foreign patients' department with translators if you need them. Go and see the delivery rooms and make your decision about which hospital from there.

Good luck, and as far as I'm concerned, Turkish health care is as good as, if not better, than the UK.

turkishbaby · 25/08/2011 15:03

Sorry I should have said that, ın the modern hospitals they are more than happy for your partners to be with you, my OH attends every scan.
However in the more 'turkish' areas and in the state hopitals (well the ones where I am in Marmaris) they dont allow men on the female wards .

justmee · 25/08/2011 17:06

hi turkishbaby ...thanks will await your mail :)

sorry for the confusment when i say on my own i dont mean litrally lock in a room and made to give birth alone lol i mean tht family wise they have told me i wont be aloud anyone in the room whilst im giving birth... i always forget to say that bit :( dohh :)

the hospital i enquired at was aydin it was also private and they had told me that last year they alloud a woman in with you but this year due to hygenic and insurance reasons they wont alow a birthing partner :( this of course really unsettled me and i couldnt sleep for days but now iv just read passmethebucket and i feel a bit better they must have gas and air then maybe if i could contact them and speak to them before hand on the phone :) when did your friends have there babys there was it recintly ?

Justmee - athough I know nothing about Turkey and having babies there, I had my DS 9 weeks ago with no pain relief and felt compelled to reassure you that it is possible and not traumatic if thats the way you have to go. Before I get shouted down as some kind of egotistic superhero - it was not a situation I planned - I planned to use gas n air then an epidural as a minimum and I consider myself a complete pain wuss. However the gas n air made me sick after just a couple of puffs then the epidural failed. At that point the wonderful midwife coached me. She told me it was vital I stayed calm, believe I could do it and draw on mental images that would give me strength and peace. If it wasnt for her I would have freaked and panicked. I did notice that every time I tensed up the pain got worse.
So, if it does come down to having no pain relief, just remember that it is possible, that staying calm and peaceful will help you, and that you can do it by trusting in your own body.
Of course I hope you do get the pain relief you want and that the hospital you chose lives up to everything you want for your birth. All the best x

passmethebucket · 26/08/2011 10:18

All the babies I'm talking about were born in the last five years. As I said, caesarians are the norm now, but one person did have her son 'au naturel' and her partner was allowed in. She chose not to have any pain relief (and actually, there wouldn't have been time - baby came so quickly) but she was fine.

Please do check around. Ring the hospitals or better still, visit them.

To be perfectly honest, since we've returned to the UK, I've heard such horror stories from the NHS (two friends have had experiences where the midwives didn't believe they were in labour - one was left on a trolley in a corridor, and the other on the ante-natal ward - until someone happened to be passing and in both cases, hrrmphed and grrumphed and eventually agreed to call someone and they found the baby halfway out - both husbands had, of course, been sent home, so no partners there for them anyway!) that if I were having another child, I can assure you I would be having it in Turkey. Both these situations above have happened within the last six weeks.

Good luck. Perhaps have your husband/partner ring the hospitals?

turkishbaby · 26/08/2011 10:48

Hi Justmee
Not sure if you got the private message I sent you. I spoke to a Turkish woman that I work with about hospitals in Aydin. She says that there are quite a few good hospitals there ,and that the university hospital is really good. She says to go round the hospitals and find the one you are most comfortable, and that she has never heard of any of the hospitals(apart from the state ones) not letting someone be with you in labour. And as long as you say you want vaginal delivery not c-section, all pain relief is available to you.
How far on are you ? Have you been happy with your care so far ?
Hope you are ok , and just think it will all be worth it when you have your beautiful baby in your arms .

Hi , I am new on mums net just joined ... how much is it to give birth in turkey? are they good there its my second pregnancy

rajna30 · 10/06/2013 17:54

im from London how would I go on about giving birth in turkey?

BeetleBugBaby · 10/06/2013 17:58

Rajna I am sorry but are you taking the piss? Hmm

Littleturkish · 10/06/2013 18:04

Rajna I would reccomend flying to Turkey now. Paying for a private hospital. Giving birth. Wait a bit. Come home.

The above advice is pretty much interchangeable with any country.

Hope that helps.

twinsoz09 · 29/07/2013 12:33

Hi there everyone :-) I'm currently 17 weeks pregnant with twins and moving to the fethiye area. I've heard so many good things about esnaf and its a great relief to hear they support natural birth too as I really don't want a c section unless completely necessary x

Do you know if they allow pain relief at Letoon hospital as my daughter will be giving birth there? Sorry I know this thread is old!

I gave birth to my daughter in Turkey.
I had private medical the whole way through my pregnancy there.
I didn't make it to my chosen hospital as it all happened so fast but I did make to the nearest private hospital and my husband was allowed in during birth and they also offered epidurals however I was too far gone for that so I did all without pain relief. They don't use gas and air in Turkey as they say it makes the baby drowsy.

vodkaredbullgirl · 25/08/2022 03:22

Fuck me the child in question is nearly in secondary school.

Shayward81 · 20/09/2023 11:43

Hi
I am due to fly to Turkey for a 10 day holiday. I am 31 weeks pregnant. I have been seen by a consultant and have been given medical consent and fit to fly.
can anyone advise the best pregnant travel insurance?
I’m also looking for advice as to costs if I do go into labour naturally, as I am aware that a lot of pregnant travel insurance don’t cover natural birth.
Many thanks
