Because I'm not. :(

Can't stop stuffing myself with chocolate and cakes. :( :(

I try to get in a few fruit and veg, but unless it's the weekend I don't manage the whole 5-a-day thing...

I'm far less healthy this pregnancy than I was with my first - I'm giving into cravings for chocolate and meals out this time I thik because I know I'll lose it all bf-ing.

First trimester I ate whatever seems appealing and that wasn't a lot. Now I'm in my second (23w), I'm getting my five a day (mainly through having chopped fruit with 0% Greek yoghurt for breakfast), two oily fish a week and plenty of lean protein and carbs like pasta. However I'm having cake every couple of days and a decent glass of wine every weekend.

G1nger · 16/08/2011 15:03

I'm entirely appetite-led during pregnancy. I've given up trying to make my body eat things that I think are a good idea. That said, I have had a few phases of fruit... I also had a phase of cookies and very little fruit. And I eat way too many crisps. Right now, though, I'm all about grapes.

CBear6 · 16/08/2011 15:26

I'm with G1nger, I'm basically eating what I fancy when I fancy it which I'm sure is "wrong" but far less stressful than worrying about it.

With DS I craved apples, strawberries, ice, and peapods so I ate relatively healthily. This time round my cravings are all over the place. I go through phases of craving fruit and there are always grapes or pineapple available for me to pick at but at various points I've also craved pistachio nuts, plain popcorn, crumpets, sweet chilli sauce, and marmite. Today it's pork pies

I do try to eat healthily and sit down to tea every night with DH and DS which is usually a good square meal (excluding the odd treat night where we have pizza or Chinese food). One thing I do when pregnant is eat breakfast which I never do when not pregnant. Breakfast is usually either porridge and honey or Weetabix or egg and toast. I'm probably deluding myself but I figure a healthy breakfast and tea, along with a daily Pregnacare and up to two pint of milk (another craving), makes up for all the crap I've been eating :)

One thing that sort of worries me though is that someone told me the MW can tell from your placenta whether you've been eating right. Not sure how true it is but I get the feeling mine will come out stamped with a health warning on it if it is true!

HPonEverything · 16/08/2011 16:32

Both - never mind 5-a-day I'm having about 20-a-day as I am craving apples and strawberries and basically any other fruit I can get my paws on. I drink milk constantly whether pg or not so my kid will have bones of STEEL.

However I'm eating tons of pork pies, scones, chocolate, lemonade, and my ice-cream intake has gone up by about 800%

Off for a pork pie now I've said it!

lucindapie · 16/08/2011 16:56

isn't it funny how the pregnacy books always say 'eat a healthy diet,' but never go into how hard it is! I know there's the first trimester morning sickness, but I've felt sick on/off throughout the whole pregnancy. I ate healthily for most of my second trimester, but now in my third I am eating chips, cheese, pizza and ice cream. Books that say don't give into your cravings really bug me because what the f* am I going to eat instead?! If I try to eat healthy stuff, I have tiny mouthfuls that take me about half an hour to finish, then give up halfway through, and then an hour later, I'm starving and eating chips again. And my diet was really healthy before pregnancy so I know it's not my fault.

candr · 16/08/2011 17:09

I am really trying but seem to vomit after healthy meals but am fine after cookies - really hope baby is not a junk food adict. Am 34 weeks with bad heartburn so a few mouthfuls is my limit. Can't wait to be able to eat a whole meal without being sick.

PrincessScrumpy · 16/08/2011 17:27

cola has got me through sickness and the only time I've had macdonalds since my teens has been when pg! I usually love veg but am really off them at the moment.

cantthinkof1 · 16/08/2011 18:01

1st time round I ate healthily - pretty much gave up chocolate, crisps and diet coke (have never managed it before in my life).

This time started out with a fruit salad craving which progressed to a cheese and onion crisp obsession, heartburn kicked in so had to ditch the cheese and onion.

Really gone off red meat this time - but iron levels have been fine so must be getting it from some where.

I am battling with my self over the need for diet coke & crisps v. heartburn.

MockCroc · 16/08/2011 18:07

Cheesy Wotsits are healthy, right? Hmm

annekins · 16/08/2011 18:43

I was a loyal Weight Watcher before I got preggie, and all the healthy stuff went straight out of the window as soon as my all day sickness arrived. I ate anything that would go in and stay there!

At 20 weeks, I am trying very hard to put a little more thought into what goes in my gob, as a) want Pickle to not be a fussy baby and b) very conscious of my weight gain. That said, I've just had 2 slices of toast and crunchy peanut butter (with a little extra butter underneath) and 2 petit filous for tea and I've been grazing all day and emptied my snack drawer at work so I can't really talk.

However I can't get enough of fruit, especially nectarines, straight from the fridge, to the extent that if I take fruit to work and it gets too warm, I'll go out and buy more at lunchtime and put the stuff I bought with me back in the fridge at home for later! Still can't go near raw meat though, and have barely even looked at a vegetable (except at the carvery where a nice pile of turkey and veg seems to go down quite well).

Oh well, never mind. Will do my best most of the time, and not beat myself up when I go astray!

jan2011 · 16/08/2011 19:16

yeh my eating is up and down too i am making sure i get the protein in though, aside from that i am eating sweets and hot chocolates and craving sweet things a lot

MrsBloomingTroll · 16/08/2011 19:21

With DC1 I was quite healthy.

This time (DC2) no chance - worse morning sickness and all I could stomach for ages was Quavers. Due any day now and I have been stuffing my face with all kinds of chocolate and biscuits as I am all-too aware that, as this will be our last child, it will be diets all the way from now on!

MrsChemist · 16/08/2011 19:23

Not really. I try, but one thing I've found is that the more veg I put in a dish, the less carbs and protein I put in, so I end up absolutely starving a little while later.

I've decided that the best course of action is to go for hearty food, so not super healthy, but filling and usually containing at least one vegetable.

I also have got into the habit of having a banana or an apple when DS has one. He usually has at least one if each a day, so I reckon I'm not doing too badly.

However, sometimes I just want a McDonalds and nothing else will do. Mmmm.... Chicken nuggets.

dorsetem · 16/08/2011 19:38

I've just ordered a chinese take away!!

CBear6 · 16/08/2011 19:40

dorsetem, I like your style! :o

jellybeans208 · 16/08/2011 19:43

I ate a load of rubbish when I was pregnant last time and my DD never gets sick really. I am pregnant again and not eating super healthy

lolajane2009 · 16/08/2011 20:19

I'm 35 + 4 and so hungry I am currently eating like a piggy and trying to fatten up my 'small for dates' baby.

spout · 16/08/2011 20:38

I am a major cheese fiend and am getting rather twitchy without my Camembert fix. To make it worse, DH bought home some Chaumes which he thought would be OK as it's pasteurised. It still isn't, apparently. And now it's in my fridge. And I can't stop thinking about it Blush

glitternanny · 16/08/2011 21:32

I'm glad I'm not alone - a past Weight Watcher and exercising 2/3 times a week - I was still overweight but had lost 4 stone over a very long period of time.

Anyway I stopped all that palava when I fell pregnant and I've not been that much better since.....

I eat healthier at work but am snacking more and I asked my MW about vitamins and she said I didn't need them....

I DO need to make more of an effort to eat better.

madmomma · 16/08/2011 22:00

I eat whatever I fancy, which is sometimes healthy & sometimes not. I have my little safeguarding habits that make me feel better though - like I'll always eat breakfast, always take my vits & fishoils; that sort of thing. That's the approach I've taken with all 3 of my pregnancies & it's served me well. 2 big healthy babies and another (touch wood) in the making. I think the main thing is to relax and eat what you fancy, then try and add on some good stuff too - like avocados or extra fruit or whatever.

PinkFondantFancy · 17/08/2011 07:20

I have been eating all sorts of stuff that I would never normally eat: big mac meals, pork pies, salt and vinegar crisps, dairylea..... Am also eating a disgusting amount of mint magnums, chocolate and cake, and am completely obsessed about French set yogurts-eat about 3 a day....

Penelope1980 · 17/08/2011 07:31

I never really appreciated how much I watched my diet until I got pregnant! Am 34 weeks now, and during this pregnancy have rediscovered butter, jellybeans, hot chips, chocolate, cake, more chocolate ... in fact, I am trying to restrict myself to one chocolate bar a day with limited success. It's hard. I mean to eat well, but apart from eating more meat and fruit as well as all the crap, I am not doing a good job of it. As this is my first I am curious about how long it will take me to lose the pg weight, and whether I can go back to a diet without all these foods!

MercyMe · 17/08/2011 07:39

I have not been healthy. Been craving ready salted crisps, and could live off chicken kebabs if my dh would let me. Have been trying to make my own healthy version, but not as good! I am 19 weeks so hopefully will come out of this feeling soon, I have been drinking heaps of milk but it has a fair bit of banana milkshake with it! Wink

TimeWasting · 17/08/2011 07:55

I'm eating whatever it is that I want. Burgers, crisps, salads, fruit.
At 30 weeks I weigh less than I did at my booking in appointment. Grin
Love being pregnant.
