Anyone Had A Membrane Sweep - Did It Work?

Hi! Just that really, have you ever had a membrane sweep & did it make any difference?

I had one about 24 hrs ago & apart from a few "twinges" nothing's happened. Am due to have another one next Tuesday. I'm only 37+3 but have had loads of problems during the later stages of pregnancy so can't wait to get the baby safely delivered now!

If the sweep is going to help, does it normally happen within 24 hrs or is there still hope? Smile

Many thanks.

Worked for me, although I was already 2cm dilated and 40+3 at the time. Got contractions within a few hours.

Hello everyone! Just coming back to update. Well, the sweep didn't work but I do now have my baby at home Grin.

The induction went well & baby Poppy arrived after a 4 hour labour. My only problem being that by the time I asked for pethidine/injection pain relief it was too late as the "crowning" was starting & I ended up doing the pushing bit with no pain relief at all (they took my gas & air away Blush).

Best of luck to everyone else still waiting xxx

Congratulations!!! Wow I can't believe you managed without any pain relief-what an absolute heroine!

I was told yesterday that due to my type 1 diabetes and the fact he's a little bigger than he should be that I'll be given a vaginal examination with the view to induce in 3 weeks (i'll be 37 weeks)

Does this vaginal exam mean a sweep or is it to see how dilated I am? I'm 3/5 engaged now which I know doesn't mean a lot with number 1.

Will this exam hurt? I can't handle smears as I'm very small, is it like this? I don't mind if it does hurt, as I know it needs to be done I just want to be prepared.

Whoop! Well done Emma and congratulations on Poppy arriving so quickly!

firsttimer I've just had a second sweep today and neither of them have hurt - felt a bit uncomfortable but not painful and I hate being messed about with so this is the sort of thing I'd normally avoid like the . If they're just doing an exam they will take it slowly and at any point you can tell them to stop - they won't be funny about it. There are no speculums involved either. The best thing to do is breathe out slowly and relax as much as you can. They will be able to see how likely an induction is to succeed by working out what your bishop's score is - google it for more info but it's basically how ready your body is to go. Good luck!

Hi all
My wife had to have 3 sweeps and then a fourth smaller sweep in hospital and not long after started feeling the contractions. On the Monday (as in 8th aug) out popped little archie after my wife had gone through hyperemesis, epidural, episiotomoty...etc etc. He is a good 8lbs 9oz and my wife and I love him to pieces. Whether or not the sweeps actually made a difference im not 100% sure but they certainly started things off. The first sweep wasnt painful at all but the second apparently was more sore afterwards. hope this helps in some tiny way. Luv to all from Johnny and Luce (and Archie!!) x

Heel all, just a quick update (& an apology for my last post, which I presume was supposed to say 'CONGRATULATIOS!)

The sweep didn't work for me & I ended up being induced & then having an emergency ceasarean as baby was badly positioned & getting distressed. It obviously wasn't what 'd planned, but LO is in my arms now & that's all that matters!

Good luck to those of you still waiting to meet your babies x

Ooh, PrincessJenga only just spotted this. Congratulations!

I've had two sweeps now and they've done buggerall. Third one is scheduled for Wednesday. I will be 41+3. Shark I hope things kick off for you very soon!

Also; bollocks to the idea of induction. I'm not doing it. He'll come when he wants to, assuming all monitoring proves he is okay in there.

Thank you all! And good luck to those of you still waiting. Induction wasn't the nightmare I'd expected it to be and now that he's here I'm just happy to have him next to me and couldn't care less how he arrived Grin
