Eating Pepper not allowed?!?! WTF

Hi

I was out for a pizza with the girls last night and one of my friends who is 9 weeks pregnant, wouldnt have any pepper on her food as she said that her doctor says it wasnt safe for pregnant women. I laughed at this and said how could pepper possibly harm you and that I ate loads of pepper with my pregnancies with no ill effect. She was very adamant saying the doctor had definitely said it, she had read it in a Miriam Stoppard book and seen it on discovery health programs.

Has anyone else heard this?

I just dont believe it and wanted to prove her wrong!

Nonsense! I've never heard such rubbish. Doesn't she realise the sauce already has salt and pepper in it anyway. It's pregnancy paranoia gone mad!

I ate pepper through my pregnancies and have never heard this. I bet it's like the tuna thing and you have to consume six tons of it before it's a problem.

Miriam Stoppard is a silly old moo anyway, imho!

What crap. Although pepper is one of the things you should limit if bf and your baby has a sensitive tummy - it can cause v. v. explosive poop. Do you think she could have got that mixed up?

Black pepper oil (as in essential oil) is to be avoided in the first trimester.

Looks like pregnant women are soon only going to be eating Organic fruit, veg and pasteurised milk thats been boiled... jeeeeeust in case there's a morsal of bacteria floating in there!

I have also read that if you suffer from morning sickness you should avoid garlic, pepper and chilies.
Having never suffered from it I can't say if there is any truth to that.

Does your friend mean pepper as in salt and pepper or pepper as in green or red pepper Beccaroll?? Either way - WHAT A BIG LOAD OF ELEPHANT POO!!!!!!!!! Never heard of either being banned and I absolutely refuse to listen to any more new recommended banned food It is bad enough that when pg with DS I could eat tuna and ham and now pg with No2 I can't
Pupuce ... I think the thing about garlic/chillies and morning sickness is that they can make you feel worse. I usually absolutely love garlic and can't get enough of it(must have been an Italian in a past life) but with DS and this pregnancy the smell of garlic sent me running for the loo ... Now I am over the morning sickness it isn't so bad but I am still not keen on the smell.
Definitely no danger to the pregnancy though ...

What rot! Pupuce right about the pepper essential oil (and other essential oils can also be dangerous in first trimester). But pepper? Pur-lease!
I'd seriously worry if I had a doctor who said things like that. And I've never read in in any Miriam Stoppard book!

I do just think its all a load of crap, I've been pregnant three times and have three healthy children and each time have been told that I can/cant eat diferent things.

Ghosty - you can't eat ham anymore?! Since when?! (have been tucking into ham salad sandwiches quite merrily this week... refuse to believe they're bad - I'm running out of things to put in sandwiches!)

GeorginaA: there's another MN thread about not eating ham when preggers. I didn't understand it. Seems that ham isn't ever considered safe in New Zealand, no matter how cooked it is??? Made no sense to me, either!!!

That's a point - can you get listeriosis or salmonella again or do you become immune after you've had it once? I'm pretty sure I had one of them in my late teens (and was quite ill with it) - had tests done and everything. Must ask the docs to look up my notes and tell me what it was...

GeorginaA, you can definitely get salmonella again as I had it as a child and then got it again a couple of months ago. The baby is not affected apparently as long as you aren't hosptialised/dehydrated or unless it makes you go into labour early. It did none of those for me so I'm assuming all is OK. Dunno about Listeria.
