Eating Pepper not allowed?!?! WTF

Hi

I was out for a pizza with the girls last night and one of my friends who is 9 weeks pregnant, wouldnt have any pepper on her food as she said that her doctor says it wasnt safe for pregnant women. I laughed at this and said how could pepper possibly harm you and that I ate loads of pepper with my pregnancies with no ill effect. She was very adamant saying the doctor had definitely said it, she had read it in a Miriam Stoppard book and seen it on discovery health programs.

Has anyone else heard this?

I just dont believe it and wanted to prove her wrong!

Oh FFS! What a load of pants! I don't have much faith in Miriam Stoppard though.

aloha · 14/10/2003 09:21

Nonsense! I've never heard such rubbish. Doesn't she realise the sauce already has salt and pepper in it anyway. It's pregnancy paranoia gone mad!

marthamoo · 14/10/2003 09:22

I ate pepper through my pregnancies and have never heard this. I bet it's like the tuna thing and you have to consume six tons of it before it's a problem.

Miriam Stoppard is a silly old moo anyway, imho!

katierocket · 14/10/2003 09:27

OMG - what next?! very silly.

CountessDracula · 14/10/2003 09:29

How long before we are all tube fed when we are pregnant cos everything is dangerous. It really is cr*p. My french friends howled with laughter at the pate and soft cheese ban!c

prufrock · 14/10/2003 09:30

What crap. Although pepper is one of the things you should limit if bf and your baby has a sensitive tummy - it can cause v. v. explosive poop. Do you think she could have got that mixed up?

pupuce · 14/10/2003 09:33

Black pepper oil (as in essential oil) is to be avoided in the first trimester.

M2T · 14/10/2003 09:34

Looks like pregnant women are soon only going to be eating Organic fruit, veg and pasteurised milk thats been boiled... jeeeeeust in case there's a morsal of bacteria floating in there!

What next!?

pupuce · 14/10/2003 09:36

I have also read that if you suffer from morning sickness you should avoid garlic, pepper and chilies.
Having never suffered from it I can't say if there is any truth to that.

Ghosty · 14/10/2003 10:35

Does your friend mean pepper as in salt and pepper or pepper as in green or red pepper Beccaroll?? Either way - WHAT A BIG LOAD OF ELEPHANT POO!!!!!!!!! Never heard of either being banned and I absolutely refuse to listen to any more new recommended banned food It is bad enough that when pg with DS I could eat tuna and ham and now pg with No2 I can't
Pupuce ... I think the thing about garlic/chillies and morning sickness is that they can make you feel worse. I usually absolutely love garlic and can't get enough of it(must have been an Italian in a past life) but with DS and this pregnancy the smell of garlic sent me running for the loo ... Now I am over the morning sickness it isn't so bad but I am still not keen on the smell.
Definitely no danger to the pregnancy though ...

bluecow · 14/10/2003 12:36

What rot! Pupuce right about the pepper essential oil (and other essential oils can also be dangerous in first trimester). But pepper? Pur-lease!
I'd seriously worry if I had a doctor who said things like that. And I've never read in in any Miriam Stoppard book!

mears · 14/10/2003 12:38

As a midwife, I have never heard of this one.

morocco · 14/10/2003 16:48

ghosty

let me join you 'la la la la la - sorry - can't hear you'

load of old cobblers and boo sucks to Miriam Stoppard

lilibet · 14/10/2003 16:53

I do just think its all a load of crap, I've been pregnant three times and have three healthy children and each time have been told that I can/cant eat diferent things.

boyandgirl · 14/10/2003 20:12

I couldn't have survived without pepper - it was one of the few things that reduced the morningsickness!.

GeorginaA · 14/10/2003 21:09

Ghosty - you can't eat ham anymore?! Since when?! (have been tucking into ham salad sandwiches quite merrily this week... refuse to believe they're bad - I'm running out of things to put in sandwiches!)

Angeliz · 14/10/2003 21:31

i think it's tosh i lived on Indian food and mashed potato.(not mixed),mmmmmmm mash! I must've had more than my fair share of pepper and dd is fine! ,,,,,,,,,,although she does sneeze alot?

pie · 15/10/2003 06:38

Placenta brain told me the title of this thread was 'Eating PAPER not allowed?! WTF?'

Don't eat paper pregnant or not.

zebra · 15/10/2003 06:59

GeorginaA: there's another MN thread about not eating ham when preggers. I didn't understand it. Seems that ham isn't ever considered safe in New Zealand, no matter how cooked it is??? Made no sense to me, either!!!

Ghosty · 15/10/2003 07:18

I know, I know Zebra ... totally barmy! No ham allowed in NZ - not from the deli OR from the vacuum packed sliced pre cooked sandwich ham ...

GeorginaA · 15/10/2003 13:13

oh bollocks to that - I'm running out of sandwich fillings.

GeorginaA · 15/10/2003 13:16

That's a point - can you get listeriosis or salmonella again or do you become immune after you've had it once? I'm pretty sure I had one of them in my late teens (and was quite ill with it) - had tests done and everything. Must ask the docs to look up my notes and tell me what it was...

WideWebWitch · 15/10/2003 15:38

GeorginaA, you can definitely get salmonella again as I had it as a child and then got it again a couple of months ago. The baby is not affected apparently as long as you aren't hosptialised/dehydrated or unless it makes you go into labour early. It did none of those for me so I'm assuming all is OK. Dunno about Listeria.

GeorginaA · 15/10/2003 16:09

Shame www, I was sort of hoping that all that feeling ill might actually have been useful for something
