ALL ADVICE WELCOME

Increasingly for that last two weeks I have been getting rib ache on my right side - know this is common but I just cannot sleep now.

The last two nights i have have been demented with it and now tonight (its 305am) I am stuck once again in the terrible twilight zone of nightime tv.

Seriously - Rib ache stroke back ache and nausea are preventing me from sleeping and my days are filled with broken sleep - quite miserable.

ALL ADVICE WELCOME

P.S are hot needle like feelings in different bits of bump braxton hicks - this is my first baby anyone else get these?

I take it you know that certain types / locations of pain in the ribs can be a sign of pre-eclampsia ?

I'd suggest speaking to your GP / midwife ASAP tbh.

hub2dee · 30/11/2005 06:46

(in the rib area)

bigscaryeyes · 30/11/2005 09:13

hub - certainly didn't - THANKYOU i have an appointment at the clinic at lunch time to day and I'm seeing midwife tomorrow so I'll def ask -
I know his head has been down since 28wks but surely he should have engaged by now i've even been worrying that he is massive or has turned as all mags/info seems to suggest he should engaged by now hence relief from rib pain - mines just started.

I've just woke up after 3.5 hours - i do feel like a right moaner as I know more lack of sleep over the comming months is to come - after posting last nite i just found it impossible to get relief from sitting, standing, etc had already had a hot bath.

After a few tears i tried arnica from my homepathic kit and managed to get off by just concentrating on breathing deeply.

In the midst of all this i felt scared becasue i know iv'e got to cope with a lot more than this during labour.

I had this in exactly that location during my last pregnancy. The docs gave me a scan because it can be pain from the liver (which by now is squashed and out of shape shoved into your rib cage by the baby) I was fine, but the pain persisted till a couple of weeks after the baby was born and interestingly, that point is still where I get a stitch when I've been lifting or rushing 3 years on. When I had my c-section the surgeon said one of dd's feet was stuck quite high near the ribs on that side which had pushed the organs and muscles about causing the pain. Harmless, but that is no consolation to you when you can't sleep. Hope you feel better soon, try and lie on the left side in bed, but hey at this stage not much is comfortable anyway is it. It will get better when the baby is born!

bakedpotato · 30/11/2005 09:50

Raise the arm on the sore side above your head
Stretch it up and away from your body quite strongly
Used to make me feel as if I'd made a bit of room

hub2dee · 30/11/2005 10:04

Sorry if I sounded a bit pushy / rude with the comment btw, bse. Just that I know PE can be serious stuff you don't want to just 'wait and see' IYSWIM. As others have posted, it's probably just positioning, but better safe than sorry !

BTW, if you wanted to find out a bit more about it, I googled PE and ribs, LOL - and this page had info. In the UK, one often-recommended site is APEC .

HTH

bigscaryeyes · 30/11/2005 12:29

hub - didn't think you were rude not at all - i'm grateful for the advice and thanks for the link. Knowing this info I am certain to raise it when I get to clinic whereas before I might onlY have mentioned it in passing.

hockey - I hope it is just positioning but the right way up! I've lost count of how many theories i've come up with - he moves quite a bit v strongly! This has led me to conclude he's just a big boy or he's wrong way up - well I hope they give me scan at the clinic - due there in an hour - best go an put clothes on!#

Cheers guys

hub - read that link page thanks - you know i did have 1+ protein a couple of months ago but they tested it further and said it was ok. Also -I hope I'm not being paranoid but I havn't eaten much becasue of nausea that last two days (2 yogs, crackers and a sandwich) I have drunk two bottle of lucozade to keep up fluids because I had loose movements on sun/mon which isn't normal for me but whats normal at mo eh?!!

Well I'll certainly mention all of this it is better to be safe than sorry.

FWIW - I was like this with dd1 in the later stages in pregnancy - and am beginning to get like it with dd2 (I am nearly 32 weeks). Just had to shuffle about and grin and bear it - had other aches and pains to contend wih after the birth.

My dd1 was head down from 26 weeks and was never completely engaged - so this is common - not that any of this makes you feel any better - but I send you cyberhugs as I know how crap this time in pregnancy cen be.

bigeyes · 30/11/2005 12:54

thanks hotm - I have counted my blessings i've had an ok time so far and havn't got any other 3rd tri niggles (well apart from loo visits - I think you become and expert of different types of toilet roll re quality - prob just me!) Though I was finding that hard to do at 3am this morning.

This is the thing with this preg/parent business its hard to know whats normal or not as everyone & babies are different just when I think i've got summit sussed you find out somthing else!

bigeyes · 30/11/2005 12:57

LOL count my blessings that is - at 3am and not inspecting the quality of toilet roll in my own loo!

hotmama1 · 30/11/2005 12:57

Nice development for me in this pregnancy is my backache - going to an obstetric physio next week at the hossy - though not really sure what they can do - if you ligaments want to go all wobbly they will - still hurts though.

bigeyes · 30/11/2005 13:08

Oh dear hot(wobbly)m - at 28 to 31 wks I thought I had Pubis D but it turned out I have strained ligaments from a fall early on and upset muscles around vertabrae in back - she gave me a kind of tough massage, advice re movements (which was mostly common sense but some useful tips - carrier bag on car seat to swivel round, wear a silky nightie in bed to turn over easier)

But I was also given a support belt to wear which did help - when I got back i walked into waiting DH and said pulled my top and said look at me I'm mister T!

But enuff daftness big hugs to you - I think the difference with niggles as I was just saying to my mam is that you know they might be with you for however many weeks whereas if you know its labour its more purposeful as you know your baby is on way and you'll get to meet them.

PotPourri · 30/11/2005 13:58

I had really sore ribs in later stages of pregnancy, was just the baby kicking. Sometimes I could even see a foot sticking out - no joke. And my ribs also flared out - which is painful in itself. Apparently that is quite normal, and archeologists use it to see if ancient bodies they find had borne children etc.

Regarding the pain, my first pregnancy (DD) I freaked out when I got leg cramp one night and thougth I would never be able to cope with labour if I couldn't cope with that. But like other poster says, you will. It's for a reason, and you have lots of hormones flowing to help you cope. Once it really gets going, you will be thinking of nothing else but getting the baby out - honestly. It isn't a walk in teh park, but it is a process and your body knows that.

And DD didn't engage until established labour, so don't worry to much about that either chick. Hope you get some sleep - have you tried a bit of paracetamol if it is really unbearable? Or some lavender oil in an oil burner in your bedroom?

bigeyes · 30/11/2005 15:01

Hi Pot, just got back from clinic - after examination and checking of the ribs etc the doc said it is positioning - so thats ok. I am going to take paracetamol 2nite if i can't sleep though I thin the arnica helped last nite.

I massage lavander oil onto bump every day - but i was planning on getting some for burner - will do tonite off to tescos to do big shop to stock up freezer ready for arrival!

Although I feel like ive got a hangover I feel so much better for being reassured - and of course little lewis is not jammed under ribs at mo! I felt sorry for the doc a bit cos she had to ask if i was going to 'harm myself' (all because i described how down I felt and weepy re pain and no sleep) I know they have to, but what a question to have to ask someone. Of course she asked this Q after she had told me there was nothing wrong!

Any further tips welcome - now I mite get even more cheered if mothercare turn up with my travel system and DH turns up with flowers and chocs .

Roll on 3am

hub2dee · 30/11/2005 16:39

Good news - that it's not PE.

bigbaubleeyes · 30/11/2005 19:15

hubdee - yeah so am I phew... No matter i've moved onto complaining about my non existent mothercare delivery I shall have something to say to them in the morning.

princesspeahead · 30/11/2005 19:44

i have the same bigscaryeyes - 32.5 weeks and my ribs on the left side have been killing me for 2 days now. I know it isn't pre-eclampsia because my blood pressure is very low! I have quite a short body anyway and it is just the ribs flaring out to make room for the baby. Bloody painful though....
