oooooook well this is what i had:

clothing:
6 vests
6 babygros
several knitted cardigans
hats
mittens
bootees
snowsuit

other stuff:
blankets
crib sheets
crib
baby bath
bouncy chair
car seat
pram

I think that was about it really!

starlover · 29/11/2005 21:30

that's the bare minimum... after receiving gifts from people we ended up with several thousand babygros, quite a lot of little outfits and more knitted hats, mittens, bootees and coats!

snowfalls · 29/11/2005 21:31

6-8 sleepsuits
6-8 vests
2-3 blankets
lots of nappies
lots of wipes
nappy cream
babywash, shampoo etc
bottle and sterilising equiptment (if not breastfeeding}

erm.....cant think now

starlover · 29/11/2005 21:32

oh and don't forget:

nappies,
cotton wool

depending on how you;'re planning to feed you might need:
bottles
steriliser
breast pump

dummies?

oh and breast pads and sanitary towels for yourself of course

optional extras:
baby toiletries
baby monitor
play gym
gro-bag

snowfalls · 29/11/2005 21:34

OOH, and bibs

Chandra · 29/11/2005 21:36

I think Starlover list it's very good, we got so many more things than that but now I feel as I have been a victim of commercialism and advertisement because you really don't need them... but are fun

In terms of higyene I would add the nappies, cottonballs, no talcum (why do they still sell it?), no baby bath products. (I wish somebody had told me that I didn't need them because I bought enough for a year!)

Ahh, and very important some bath spa products because you will need some pampering after the birth

Chandra · 29/11/2005 21:37

Did it take me a life time to write my message???

starlover · 29/11/2005 21:39

lol chandra... no i just typed really fast!

PruniStuffing · 29/11/2005 21:40

A baby sling is very very good if you can be ars*d because you can get on with stuff while the baby sleeps as opposed to having to do things one-handed whilst a small, grizzly baby gets on with the grizzling.

Honest. Don't believe all those people who'll tell you they're rubbish. I suspect those people may have cleaners and cooks.

bramblina · 29/11/2005 21:40

Socks, scratchmits, the hooded towels/ cuddlerobes are handy (3 is good), baby monitor, if money is tight I would say you could do without the baby bath (we could have) and if you get a 3 in 1 pram you could use the carrycot part instead of a moses basket. Changing mat. Muslin squares or cheap facecloths. Sponge. Nail clippers. Gripe water is good to have in (only use after 1 month though). Will think more.

Mercy · 29/11/2005 21:42

ooooh this takes me back! It's so exciting buying for your first

I think we pretty much had what starlover suggests (does crib = cot or moses basket?)

I would add

muslin cloths
changing mat (needed for 2+ years)
dummy - maybe

I'll rack me brain

busybusybee · 29/11/2005 21:42

Mothercare have a good list on the back of there catalogue - or the last one i saw did - I think it covers most occasions well

If you do not have a tumble drier i would definitely reccomend loads of vests and babygros - raid NCT sales and charity shops - as long as your baby has something CLEAN DRY and WARM to wear he or she will never know the difference. I would resist the temptation to have more than 2-3 "pretty" outfits for a baby under 6 months - unless you are out and about visiting you will probably be too tired to bother with the hassles of complicated tights, bootees dresses etc

HTH

snowfalls · 29/11/2005 21:42

And for yourself

earplugs and valium

misdee · 29/11/2005 21:43

i have a set of monitors you can have.

bramblina · 29/11/2005 21:43

Oh snowfalls, don't worry her! It's not that bad! At least for us it wasn't.

misdee · 29/11/2005 21:43

oh and a steam steraliser and bouncey chair.

Mercy · 29/11/2005 21:45

Actually what I would recommend if you can afford it (or a generous friend/relative) is a lambskin or sheepskin. They are fab!

QueenVictoria · 29/11/2005 21:49

Dont underestimate how much people will buy you - especially if its your first.

Starlovers list is pretty good.

A baby gym was a must with both of ours too.

Baby bath was a bit of a waste tbh but we had to for a certain amount of time because it suited for DDs oilatum treatment for eczma (a bath would have required more in it)

We didnt use mittens - found socks worked better as mittens.

muslin squares have been most useful this time round for lots of things but particularly feeding as i b/feed and bibs dont cut it and if DS pulled off i had something to mop up the leakage/spray!

Calpol/medised/teething gel/colic remedies (infacol was good for us) in readyness rather than getting after you need it??????

Baby change bag.

Musical Cot mobile was a god send for both of ours.

QueenVictoria · 29/11/2005 21:52

i second the nail clippers - an absolute MUST.

munz · 29/11/2005 22:03

bloody hell girls - I'd best get reading! lol - thanks for the info, keep the ideas coming.

rightly or wrongly DH want to have enough to get buy for the first month of so as we don't want to assume ppl will buy us things - I suspect we will be but i'd rather have too much than not enough - if that makes sence??

munz · 29/11/2005 22:09

ooh misdee - what moniters are they?

we've got a carry thingy, a play gym, the usual bathing products soap etc.. (one bottle of each) about 10 packs of wipes - went OTT on a BOGOF! lol. got the crib and pram. bottles steraliser pump etc- was planning on breast feeding/expressing if I can do - do u think it's worht buying for formual incase - or should I wait? - don't want to risk DH having to be sent to the shop u see! lol, i've got 70 nappies (dippy's and 20 reusables) is that enough disposables? - i'll be doing resuables from about 3/4 weeks hopefully - well might make it 4 after all visitors have left etc.

got a stock of washing powder in alread - surecare tabs - bogof in tesco! lol.

is a baby bath really nesecary? got baby gates (well will do from the army)

also got blankets/sheets muslins etc. a snow suit and coat (incase it's still really really cold as I suspect it will be here beg of march) a cot mobile. some dummies - DH not keen on them so i've only brought 4. some teddys.

I'm sure most of it is commercialised! lol.

starlover · 29/11/2005 22:13

baby bath is kind of useful because you don't have to use as much water... aside from that you probably could get away with not having one.

wherabouts are you? I have one i need to get rid of!
we onyl used it because we bathed ds in the sitting room as the bathroom was way too cold (we have no heating)

nappy wise you will probably be getting through around 7-8 a day

hotmama1 · 29/11/2005 22:15

I've started a thread asking for sling recommendations if you are interested in getting one - that is if anyone can be bothered to post!

snowfalls · 29/11/2005 22:15

When I was pregnant with DT'S, I bought 900 nappies altogether 400 in size newborn and the rest in the next size up, and what happened..........they were 2 months prem, so the nappies were useless for about 4 months

snowfalls · 29/11/2005 22:15

I thought I was so well prepared
