Does anybody know whether it's safe to have an injection for a filling whilst pregnant. I'm 7 weeks pregnant and due to have tooth re-filled today. I seem to remember having an injection before whilst pregnant but want to be sure it's ok.

I had one; the dentist gave me a different anaesthetic to the one he would normally give me, and he also used a different material to fill the tooth - I had to go back after I had dd to have it re-filled because it wasn't so hard wearing but was safer for the baby.

I have had dental treatment while pregnant. The anaesthetic was the same, but it did not have any adrenaline in it. I think the adrenaline is used to reduce bleeding, it's not necessarily harmful during pregnancy, but isn't strictly needed, so isn't used if possible. An added advantage of not having the adrenaline - for me - was that I wasn't shakey afterwards. For years I thought that my shakeyness after dental treatment was a result of fear, I didn't realise that it was connected to the adrenaline in the anaesthetic.

I've never had an amalgam filling during pregnancy, only a 'temporary dressing'. I don't know whether that's anything to do with the pregnancy, or just related to the treatment. After giving birth I was meant to go back and have the temprary replaced by amalgam.

Thanks Wigwambam.

That's very useful to know Prettycandles. I'm quite tempted not to have any injection just because I hate the numb feeling afterwards - as a child I never had injections for fillings - but at the same time am a bit nervous of the drill.
