Pregnant and very obese

Hi all,
I have just found out I am pregnant, I am 5 weeks. It was a total surprise, but I am very happy about it.

But- I am considered very obese with a BMI of 42. Like I said, this pregnancy is unplanned. I was two stone into losing weight in order to try and get pregnant. So please I don't need lots of judgement about getting pregnant- I am sure I will get enough of that from the doctors.

I am assuming I will have to have internal scans as the majority of my weight is on my belly- am I right?

Also- is there anyone else out there like me?! Or any positive stories of women of my size who have had fine pregnancies?

I am very healthy otherwise, normal blood pressure, never smoked, actually quite fit for my size and only 30, so there are a few things in my favour!

Thanks
Hx

i have always been quite big and they always go on about it but i have never needed an internal scan and i have had 3 totally healthy pregnancy's with no complications. you know the drill just dont lie on the sofa eating ice cream for 9 months and you will be fine... though it is sooo tempting. big congrats on the 2 stone.

hi there
I have BMI 41 and got the all clear today from my 12 week scan. No problems at all. The pictures are so clear!
Health is great and I don't need consultancy led care Grin.
I just wanted to add a positive story to the thread.

Thanks everyone for their great messages.

SupaDupa- that's great news that your scan went so well and that you don't need consultant care. I thought it was mandatory over 35 BMI?

Hello
Just joined mumsnet but wanted to reply to you. I have a bmi of 57 and will be 17 weeks tomorrow. My scans were fine, had one at 10wk1 (they thought I was further along) and the view was good, my second at 13wk5 they said was restricted but we got a great profile shot of bambino.
All my doctor said to me was that I was a high risk pregnancy which I already guessed (also got low thyroid and pcos) but she knew how long we'd been TTC and how hard I find it to lose weight. Both doctor and midwife have been very positive and supportive.
I do wish I'd lost some weight beforehand but at the time, I was very depressed and just couldn't concentrate on it. I was in counselling for binge eating as well.
Since finding out I was pregnant, I've stopped binging, am eating healthily and have gone off most sweet stuff (apart from plain mcflurries, my 1 weakness). I lost about 7lb in the first few weeks, not through trying to but just with a healthier diet and I've still kept it off.
Just starting to show now and I've got to go to see the anaesthetist clinic and maternal wellbeing clinic but apart from that just normal scans and midwife appointments. Should be having a GTT around 24-28 weeks but am feeling really well and, apart from heartburn and tiredness in the first trimester, I've felt really well.
Good luck with your pregnancy and I'll look out for your updates x

Hi you will prob have the diabetes test and with the internal scans I had to have one at 12 weeks cause they couldnt see much cause they said the fat on my tummy and Im only 12 and half stone size 14 so I think sometimes its due to belly fat or could be cause I not had enough water but if you do have them it will prob be before 12 weeks.

The internal scans dont hurt at all I got a bit panicy when first saw how long it was but not much goes in at all and it doesnt hurt so dont worry.

Also its fab you lost the 2 stone so it wont be too bad to put it back on during pregnancy.

Slimmers world ok when pregnant and another one personally I wouldnt worry about it too much and just enjoy it your going to put weight on anyway.

Only thing I have started doing is taking hour walks 3 times a week and tryed eat more fruit instead of choc but since doing that lost 3 pounds not trying to lose weight but I dont want to put on a huge amount as alread put on about 2 stone in 17 weeks.

Congratulations on the good newsxx

Congrats! Losing the 2 stone obviously got you into the conception zone! Something similar happened to me.

One thing my MV mentioned to me when talking about weight (I was worried as I put on loads with DD1 - but I had spent 9 months eating ice cream.... ) was that if you are very big they don't worry now if you don't put on any weight at all during pregnancy. You might find it useful to discuss with your MV.

Happy for you!!! cheer up it will be fine!!

ksaunders · 13/07/2011 16:40

Congratulations! You don't need to worry about 'slimming' or 'not slimming'. Just concentrate on eating healthily for you and your little one, and remember the old saying 'eating for two' is rubbish. Wishing you a happy and healthy 9 months!
