mc cabrio, But it depends on your car, need the seat to fit.

Awomancalledhorse · 05/07/2011 16:07

We're getting a Britax first class plus, which will go from birth-4 bargain at £100 & we've got a VW Passat.
Britax have a 'fit finder' on their website, so you can see what will fit in your car.

babyonbord · 05/07/2011 16:11

We got the britax baby safe plus but it's not very pretty I'm wondering whether to get the mamas and papas aton (i had the primo viaggio for my ds) probably a bit late now as i'm 39 weeks lol. I wanted one to match my ds car seat (a pallas in blue). I guess it's more important that baby is safe than what it looks like.

definitely is more important i agree. We have the pallas for ds2 and ds3 is in mc priori. Really rate them both tbh. Was surprised at the pallas much more comfy as a booster than the mc rodi.

babyonbord · 05/07/2011 16:36

i love the pallas, my son is sooo happy in it he doesn't even try and make ill advised bids for freedom which he does in his pram i wish they made one that was from birth that would solve all my problems lol.

Maxi Cosi Carbrifix

allthefires · 05/07/2011 19:48

The only thing that matters is it fits. We have brought maxi cosi as fits a large range of buggys i like too.

PrincessScrumpy · 05/07/2011 21:10

Maxi Cosi Carbrifix - I had one with dd1 and have bought a second so I'll have them for the twins (due sept). They fit on lots of pushchairs so depends on that and I have yet to find a car in which they don't fit - definitely check though.

Car seats are a total bugbear of mine. So much so that I bought one in America and carried it back (graco)
My problem is the harness, they are so easy for them to wiggle out if, or even just simply able to slip off the shoulder Angry
The seats in the USA have 5 point harnesses they close at the chest. It makes it so much safer, but I can't find any here Sad

thisisyesterday · 05/07/2011 21:42

over here you are not allowed chest clips because the law says that they must have only one buckle to undo in case of a crash (to allow quicker removal of the child)

if you ahve a child that is a houdini I think the 5 point plus looks like a great device that stops them getting out but without the chest clip

sorry for hijack OP!!

to answet your question, we had a maxi cosi infant carrier, but if i was buying again i would buy the Britax babysafe plus. because it's slightly bigger and has better crash test results

I would then get an extended rear-facing seat because they are much, much safer. we have a besafe izi combi and a britax 2 way elite

however, as previous posters have said, you need to check what seats will fit in your car.

soymama · 05/07/2011 21:50

Oops Blush may well be breaking some laws! Thanks for the link and the heads up! Smile

thisisyesterday · 05/07/2011 22:09

yeah i don't know how it all works legally, i know that they are not allowed to sell a seat with a chest clip... but they do seem to be freely available to buy over here, so i am not sure you are breaking the law if you use one...?

Tangle · 05/07/2011 22:40

If I'm reading this page correctly, to be legally sold in the UK a seat must conform to regulation EU R44/03 or R44/04 and must display a label to confirm this fact. It is legal to use a seat that doesn't conform to these more recent safety standards (04 being the most upto date), as long as the seat conforms to a British Standard or earlier version of R44 - however, I've found some of the other information on this site to be written in a way I disagree with so I'd check whether that is correct.

In general, I tend to refer any car seat questions I have to these ladies - I've contacted them a number of times over the 4+ years since DD1 was born and they've never failed to be incredibly helpful and extremely knowledgeable.

Going back to the original question, we bought a Recaro infant carrier when DD was born - which was great but quite narrow and by 7 months her shoulders were too wide. We then got a Britax 1st Class to keep her RF a little longer (which she hated) before discovering fully RF Grp 1 seats were legal in the UK - at which point we got a BeSafe IziKid, which she's just grown out of at just over 4.

Our first priority was very much what was safe in our car. Please make sure you buy a seat from a reputable store who will check the fit for you - my personal experience experience is that you're more likely to get a competent fitter at a small independent store than a multi-national chain that does not specialise in this field. If you have to buy on line, please get your seat checked - most county councils do free car seat checks at fire stations through the year, and a good retailer should be more than happy to check the fit for free. On line manufacturer fit-guides are a good starting point but they are known to be fallible, so please do check even if the manufacturer's website states it should all be fine.

nannyl · 05/07/2011 22:42

i was always gonna get the maxi cosi cabrio... until i read Junes which? report

and i have bought the Britax babysafe II SHR, which is even safer. It has a 5 point harness for a new born too, and is super safe with and without the base, which is important to me, as i have floor store things so although i have isofix i cant use any base with a foot (aka ANY group 0 base..... GRRR)

I got mine from mothercare sale, a complete bargain at

babyonbord · 06/07/2011 09:25

I think i'll keep the britax baby safe one, i liked the fact when we bought it that it was a bit bigger than other infant car seats, i found with ds1 that getting him in and out of the smaller ones was a real issue i just wanted it in pretty colours :( mind you i'd probably be able to get a cover for it.
