I'm expecting my first in September and need some advice - Does anyone have any recommendations regarding changing bags?

babyonbord Nothing wrong with it if you can afford it! Sadly, I'm a pauper! Grin

If you have more money to spend, Il Tutto have gorgeous ones. I bought the Mia in black when I had 2 in nappies. I have taken the lining out and used it as an overnight bag too.

i think my dh might have issues if i told him the exact cost of some of the things i've bought lol, he freaked a bit when i told him the playmat cost 75 quid until i pouted told him it was my money and reminded him that was why i worked and didn't he want his firstborn to have the best at which point he got quite happy about spending my wages on the baby, i also promised to buy him the new call of duty when it's released lol. But i know what you mean when i had my ds my ex didn't have the same kind of income my dh does and other than the pram my mum bought us everything was second hand or free.

I have a not so secret obsession with baby bags Grin Having said that I have recently had dd3, it was a running joke about what kind of bag I was going to get Blush I didn't get around to getting one before baby was born, and Mr W in a panic bought a Tesco £10 one, its bloody brilliant, lots of pockets, kept meaning to get a different one but absolutely no need. I also have used one of the other girls Peppa Pig rucksacks to stick nappy, wipes, bottle in when I've been running around.

i have been recommended the pacapod too. i am going to put my birthday money towards it(as it isn;t a cheap option). it has litle sections which come out for feeding and changing so you can seperate it (if that makes sense). i know it is a lot of money, but i like things with lots of pockets & compartments to help keep me organised (i need all the help i can get!) this is their website

Saffra · 05/07/2011 17:52

I have just bought a Pacapod. I was going to go for the leather one called Phoenix, but was put off by the weight (and also they didn't have it in stock in John Lewis at the time, and impatient me just wanted to get it bought!). So, ended up getting the lighter Napier instead:

I really like the pod system. As a lover of big bags, I know they aren't always practical as things get all mixed up inside, so the pods look like a good solution.

£100 for something that's going to stink of poo within a week? No ta!

allthefires · 05/07/2011 19:37

Skip hop duo . It was my 3rd and final one. Avent kit bag that was given to us was rubbish and the caboodle one too bulky. Free boots one very good for nursery.

silverangel · 05/07/2011 20:33

I'm getting the skip hop duo twiin one, in stripes, not too girly for oh and massive - clips on the back of a double buggy with enough room for double bottles / nappies etc. Its about £80. I've seen some gorgeous bags but they just wouldn't be big enough for twins.

allthefires · 05/07/2011 20:40

Good choice. I saw one cheap somewhere but cant remember where sorry!

vallinnapod · 05/07/2011 21:16

I second the OiOi recommendation. Got the Hobo one. Yes, it's very large but we are using all-in-one reusable nappies and TBH several spare ones of these plus an anticipated wet bag with a couple of dirties, some wipes and an outfit change and it is quite packed Blush. Originally bought a Skip Hop Dash but for this purpose it was too small (loved the faux Paul Smith stripe colour!)

mamaesi · 05/07/2011 21:22

changing bags are not needed and I hate the way they look.

i use a cheap changing mat that folds up. a large make-up type bag for nappies and wipes...then I chuck that inside a really fab large normal bag.

a very nice tote style or any large handbag will do. this way you are still fashionable and not so 'mummy'

mamaesi · 05/07/2011 21:24

everyone from primark to louis vuitton make large bags now.

find the best one!

NaturalOptimist · 05/07/2011 21:35

I've got the Gigi Storksak and it is brilliant with lots of pockets, a bottle holder, mini changing mat etc. It is £130 brand new but I got mine for a tenner off ebay.

GingerbreadGiraffe · 06/07/2011 07:30

mamaesi - my sentiments exactly :) There are so many cool options with normal bags.

I dislike the mummsy 'bag over the buggy' handles look.

I had an awful large one that I bought before I knew what I was doing pre DD. Used it once.

breatheslowly · 06/07/2011 07:55

I had a Pacapod, but I have now got a £10 beach bag instead with a separately bought changing mat and it is much better. I found that the Pacapod was way too heavy and didn't have enough space. This was because it is made up of multiple bags, so most of the space in the big bag is taken up with the little bags. And there wasn't enough space in the little feeding bag for a whole day's worth of milk and food. If I took DD out of her pram the weight of the Pacapod would make the pram fall over.

Pastabee · 06/07/2011 08:30

I have just bought the Radley changing bag. Reduced to £59 in the sale. A bit of a treat for me as I obviously know you can get cheaper bags.

Don't know if it's any good as LO isn't here yet but it looks like a normal bag and comes with changing mat and thermal bag. I really like it.

babyonbord · 06/07/2011 08:39

I think changing bags can be useful in that they are purposefully designed, i like that they come with built in bottle holders and you get a matching changing mat, also the ones i've bought lots of different pockets so you can put your phone and wallet and dummies in without losing them in the bottom of a handbag. I guess it's personal taste, i don't think changing bags are "mummy" some are really nice and fashionable. I love my yummy mummy one, i've even bought my mum one for her birthday after she complimented it, (as she is going to be looking after ds when i go back to work).

nicolamumof3 · 06/07/2011 09:32

I have three, for dc4 due any day now.

I have a babymel which i have from previous. Its fab as its soft slouch comfy to carry but also clips onto any pushchair handlebar which i love or buggies with two handles. Nice and plain dh would carry it no probs, i have the black quilted hearts.

I also have the boden one, and a pink lining satchel.

babyonbord · 06/07/2011 09:34

see a girl can never have too many changing bags lol

KaraJS · 06/07/2011 09:57

My nana bought me one from tesco direct £15 bless her, has pockets on side and front and has a changing mat and little clear bag for cream cotton wool etc inside

sparklytoes · 06/07/2011 14:30

I've just ordered the wallaboo changing bag - it should be here soon. I looked at loads and didn't want one that looked to plasticky - the wallaboo one looked a bit more funky and got fairly good reviews for the price. I'll see how I get on with it when it arrives Smile

OnionEyes · 06/07/2011 14:39

I have this bag but in plain black, wish I'd been able to get this cherry one, I love it. Looks great hanging from a red buggy, enough pockets for everything but not so many that you can't find things.

I like the Skip Hop Duo too, but I prefer mine because it has a flap over the top to keep out the rain and stop things falling out easily.

Pussinflatboots · 06/07/2011 15:27

I bought a tiny tillia (sp?) one. The zip broke after 4 mths, and the bottle insulator only fits narrow bottles, not tommee tippee ones for instance.
The free one from Boots is loads better.

ksaunders · 06/07/2011 16:01

I have a pink lining yummy mummy changing bag, not the cheapest but at £75 it was definitely worth it imo for good amount of room and pockets. To each their own, but worthwhile considering your own needs...
*Will you use disposable or reusable nappies (many cloth nappies take up more room in a bag than a disposable)
*Are you likely to go on day trips or be out best part of a day and therefore need to carry several nappies & plenty of wipes
*Will you need space to carry a bottle (if so, insulated bottle pockets can be useful if you might want to make up a bottle before going out to give to lo in 30 mins-1hr time)
*sometimes it's useful to carry a change of clothes in the earlier days in case of nappy leaks (tmi: my ds had explosive poo which sometimes went right up and out back of nappy - nice!)

  • when lo is a bit older I have had room for small toys to keep him occupied whilst having a coffee etc when out
  • what do you carry in your handbag and will you have separate handbag to change bag? I use change bag as my handbag so it needs to hold my purse, keys, phone and any other 'essential' junk I would carry in a handbag (tissues, make up....)

Hope this helps!
