Gwendoline - I'm not pregnant, and wouldn't touch Mr Whippy van ice cream with a bargepole. My (healthy) Nan had one, became violently ill and nearly died. Was traced back to ice cream machine not being cleaned properly, and all the dirt and bacteria being pumped through with the ice cream

The only things I didn't have while pregnant with any of my four DC were soft boiled/poached eggs (and my runny scrambled), my usual mooing steak - opted for medium instead and peanuts - two asthmatic children, one exzema, so advised against, and oysters.

With DD3, I ate shed loads of sushi. Here in Spain (and I'm sure it's the same in the UK) all sushi grade fish must, by law, be frozen before use which renders it safe for consumption pregnant or not. I probably ate a kilo of prawns a couple of times a week and I also ate nibbles of paté, pata negra and the odd bit of salami here and there. Also had a glass and a half ish of wine once a week.

Went off coffee with every pregnancy and it took a good two years before I could drink it again - but I can only drink proper coffee, instant now makes me want to hurl, so much so that if anyone's round and wants it they have to make it themselves.

Unless she's giving birth to a rare steak or some unpasteurized brie, this is the wrong thread. :)

I think the decision on what to eat during pregnancy is not so much to do with real risk, but perceived risk.

Most people who become pregnant again soon after a mc will know that the subsequent pregnancy carries a fair amount of anxiety with it. The OP has other stuff to cope with at the moment too. I should imagine it's much the same for anyone with a tendency towards anxiety, pregnancy related health issues, fertility issues etc.

So whereas somebody who is 'emotionally balanced' (for want of a better term) during their pregnancy will be able to logically assess the risks of eating a bit of pate or some runny egg and make their decision based on facts, a pregnant woman suffering from anxiety will be unable to eat the food without thinking of the worst case scenario. For example I ate some burgers last week that I wasn't sure were 100% well done. For several hours afterwards I was catastrophising and although my brain was running through the facts that they were safe - hot all the way through, cooked for longer than required by the instructions - I was still waiting for the food poisoning to kick in.

Sometimes the anxiety following eating something deemed 'risky' negates the pleasure obtained from eating it. I love runny eggs, but I don't love them enough to want to cope with the anxiety afterwards.

Peanuts!!!!! Mmmmm, peanut butter, peanut brittle and the ultimate peanut M and Ms. Hummus, hummmmmmmmmmmmus.

Due to sister with severe nut allergy no peanuts or sesame when pregnant or BF, pregnant first time 2008, BF 2 years, pregnant again due in August. Peanut products have acquired a gravitational pull on supermarket shelves.

Maybe formula is the way forward, think of it as a controlled experiment, one BF one FF while I eat M and Ms. Compare and contrast.

In France it is the norm for pregnant women to eat brie - friend of mine, 5 children, all born in France, she craved brie, all of them perfectly healthy.

MamaLaMoo (sorry if I got your name wrong)
I craved peanut M&Ms with my third child but didn't eat them at all, he had a nut allergy, the consultant said if I'd eaten them when pregnant and breast feeding he probably wouldn't have had an allergy. I could have slapped him.

Anyone worrying about peanuts in pregnancy should check the updated advice. it's based on a joint study between uk and israeli scientists, my neighbour and her sister in israel were involved in the study. my neighbour (avoided peanuts in pregnancy) has 3 kids, two with allergies. her sister, living in israel, has 5 kids, all without allergies. they give their kids peanut snacks there from under a year old. i got my neighbour to bring some back for me, they're a bit gross but worth it to avoid allergies and my kids love them.

I avoided everything I was supposed to while pregnant then found out AFTER baby was born that I had contracted salmonella from bean sprouts! No-one warns you about bean sprouts! Neither of us got ill from it, though. I must have a cast iron gut!
