Baby slings

I want to get a baby sling that I can cradle the baby in. I was thinking of a baba sling, but someone has recommended the closer sling. I know that there are reviews on here for this kind of stuff but I want it to do a specific job. I already have a baby bjorn, so I want something now that my baby can sleep in in a cradled position from birth. Any ideas/recommendations. thanks

I used a Wilkinet from birth.

PotteringAlong · 24/06/2011 12:56

look on the natural mamas website - sling advice a go go!

You can do a cradle carry with a stretchy wrap, like a Moby. Or with a ring sling, but i think that people find them a bit harder with newborns. We carried DD in a stretchy wrap from birth and liked it, although it took a while to get the hang of tying it. Video here: (no one i know).

I have the Close which is great for tinies, and for BF. I don't Luke the stretchy wrap type as you need 2 willing slaves to tie some of them. I also have the ergo which is fab when they're a bit older.

mothercare had the close sling half price the other day.... so check there if you go for that one!

personally i would get a moby wrap

valentinemum10 · 25/06/2011 00:42

wilkinet is good but a bit fussy with the long ties.

prolificwillybreeder · 25/06/2011 08:40

I checked mothercare online just now and it's £49 :( darn it! Must of missed it!

bum, it must've been old colours (think it was fig and something else) i guess they sold out quick

RitaMorgan · 25/06/2011 09:32

Close carrier is great, I never used it for a cradle hold though.

I tried the Babasling and found it a bit rubbish - it's quite hard to adjust, and I couldn't adjust it while it was on. Found a ring sling better.

I have found my baba sling to be one of my best baby buys ever, we have used it every day since ds was newborn, and now he is one I use it every day on the school run. He had awful silent reflux and it was the only way to settle him. I also find it really comfortable to wear.

RockChick1984 · 25/06/2011 12:01

I love my babasling, DS falls fast asleep in it whenever I carry him in the 'sleeping tiger' hold - didn't like the other cradle type way of wearing it! He's nearly 4 months old now and loves the 'little joey' hold while out and about because he can see what's going on! Only downside is not being able to adjust the size whilst wearing it but once I got it to a comfortable size I've never had to mess with it again so not really a disadvantage!

Have a look at this website, it has a lot of good ideas and recommendations

We used a home made wrap (moby-style) around the house, and a mei-tai when out and about, from about 2 weeks after he was born (it was summer, and I found the wrap too warm to wear out)

I didn't ever get the hang of slings because they pulled on one shoulder too much, but we're still using the mei-tai 10 months later (although I switch to a back carry these days - DH still carries him on the front though)

I never got the hang of feeding in either of them though.

LoopyLoopsBettyBoops · 25/06/2011 18:03

I have:

Baba sling
Mobi wrap
Baby Bjorn

Each have their uses.

The Baba sling is the least useful really. The babby isn't held very snugly to your body and it is hard to adjust, however it is really easy to put on and take off. This one lives on my car ready for quick nips into shops.

The Mobi wrap is my favourite. It's very versatile, can be used with tiny babies and heavy toddlers in a variety of positions and baby can be lovely and snuggly. Definitely the best for dancing. However, it is a bit of a pain to put on and take off, and putting it on outside can be very tricky indeed.

The Baby Bjorn is DH's favourite, but I never got on with it at all. Average to put on and take off, baby held nice and firmly, no messing around. A good one for dads I think.

LoopyLoopsBettyBoops · 25/06/2011 18:04

Ugh, baby, I am not from Netmums, honest! Blush

ChunkyPickle · 25/06/2011 18:20

Loopy - yes, my DP never got the hang of a wrap at all, but show him the mei-tai with straps to tie round rather than a bit of fabric and he was well away

(I didn't get to carry the baby when we were out together for months because he wanted to do it)

Bumperlicioso · 25/06/2011 18:33

I have a cream Close baby carrier going for sale if any one is interested. I preferred a basic wrap and used the Kari Me, but the Close is good for starting off. Didn't manage the cradle carry in any sling but used the tummy-tummy upright one from birth.

Now dd2 is bigger I am loving my homemade Mei tai.

Pussinflatboots · 25/06/2011 19:13

I had high hopes for the Sleepy Wrap, but just didn't get on with it Sad
Got a cheap version of baby bjorn which is comfier and which dd loves (infantino flip, I think).

joyful2day · 28/06/2011 18:40

Thanks everyone. I'm gonna get DH to take a look at all of your suggestions over the weekend. Trawl the net. I think you've saved us a lot of leg work. I love the UTube of the dad wrapping his little one up in a sling it's so cute.

Yeah - great Youtube of baby wrap - it's been on the news I think. Here's a couple of useful links for finding a suitable sling. First one is a group on facebook with lot's of people talking about slings: www.facebook.com/slingmeet

This one allows will help you narrow down your search by colour, price or brand :
www.pramsupermarket.com/baby-carriers

Hope that helps.
Best
Daniel

Moby wrap for me all the way! Loved it, very versatile and I found relatively easy to put on. Picked one up eBay for a tenner!
