Did you? And if you did, when and how much??
I abstained first and second time round but am thinking a wee glass now and again might be ok....
Wait till 12 weeks???? Or wait till the birth??

When I talked to GP and MW before going on holiday to France at 18 weeks, I was told to have a 'small glass of red wine with dinner'!

Which I did. I rarely drink more than a glass anyway, so continued to do so a couple times a week. Will do the same this time round, though don't feel like drinking atm.

I'm not drinking as I wouldn't give a newborn alcohol so not giving it to my unborn... I can imagine it being hard if alcohol is something that you're craving but personally so far not having any hasn't been an issue at all.

PIMSoclock · 24/06/2011 22:20

I'm not sure that's a fair example H007, I wouldn't give a newborn diet coke and a cheese burger either, but I wouldn't last a full preg without one.
I respect ur opinion to abstain just not really convinced that's 'i wouldn't give it to a new born' is a reasoned argument.
If that's the case, I'll crack open the breast milk now Grin

Manns brown ale was my tipple of choice during pregnancy, both times. Prob no more than a bottle a month though, just didn't fancy it that much. And the odd glass of wine (not counting the full bottle of red I drank the night before I found out ds2 was on his way Blush).

Crosshair · 24/06/2011 22:27

Diet coke and a cheese burger arnt drugs tbf to H007.

H007 · 25/06/2011 09:40

pimms sorry you feel like that but it is just my opinion am not trying to force it on anyone else. However I can't think of any justified reason for drinking alcohol when pregnant.

The master of one of of Ireland's major maternity hospitals said on the radio that one or 2 units, once or twice a week, after 13 weeks is the limit he would recommend sticking to. I can't remember his name or which hospital Hmm, but that's what I stick to when pg of bfing.

Flossie69 · 25/06/2011 10:02

During my first pregnancy, I did have a glass of red wine once or twice a week, and a bit more when we went on holiday. Towards the end of pregnancy, I developed pre-eclampsia, and then as a complication of this had HELLP syndrome, which affects the liver. As a result, DS was born at 32 weeks. Now I don't know if the two were linked, but I always told myself if I was ever pregnant again, I wouldn't touch a drop. So when I fell pregnant with DD, I stopped drinking as soon as I knew.

Because I always knew this is what I intened to do, I did not find it too difficult, but there were times I was tempted. On the plus side, I didn't put on any weight while pregnant, so dropped 10kg as soon as I had her, though this was not all down to not drinking. And since then, I am much less tolerant to alcohol, and am finding myself drinking a lot less, so all good.

As long as you do not feel pressured either way, and are sure of the risks and benefits, I am sure that having the odd unit of alcohol occassionally is fine, but I am very happy with the desicion I made - but thats not to say I don't still enjoy the odd glass (or two) of wine at the weekend Wink now I'm not pregnant!

SpringchickenGoldBrass · 25/06/2011 10:11

Everyone should do what's right for them. Small amounts of alcohol are extremely, extremely unlikely to do any damage and this zero-tolerance attitude started with right-wing foetus-worshippers who hate women; it's about making women incubators whose behaviour must be controlled.
If you go off alcohol, or if you decide for yourself that the risk is not one you are prepared to take, fair enough, do what suits you.
I drank a lot in the first trimester, due to not actually knowing I was PG. My DS is on the Gifted and Talented list at school, so no damage done.

Isthreetoomany · 25/06/2011 10:21

I think it's up to the individual. I'm on my 3rd pregnancy, and not really drank through any of them. Have made a rare exception at weddings for the odd glass of champagne.
But I generally don't feel like drinking alcohol when pregnant anway. If I was craving alcohol I think I might have the odd glass at the weekend, but then not sure I could stick to just the one so probably easier for me to avoid it altogether!

FirstTimeMummyToBe · 25/06/2011 12:18

Reading this thread has made me want to drink haha i am 18+3 and have had 1 drink at 16 weeks and it made me feel so much more relaxed whilst out and everyone else was drinking. :)

I am going out with friends tonight to see a band and considering havin 1 but will see how i cope without first.

also sick of everyone saying just have 1 when i am content with soft drinks :(

chocolateyclur · 25/06/2011 12:30

I'm not drinking, but thanks to a beer craving I'm on the alcohol free stuff. It's a personal choice - but apparently abstaining til 12 weeks is best.

Saffra · 25/06/2011 17:27

Agree that it's a personal choice - and I personally have a limit of 1-2 units, up to a max of twice a week from the 2nd trimester onwards. But, I don't have this regularly just when I fancy (which turns out not to be as much as I thought). As far as I'm concerned, I have read into it and feel informed about risk etc, and am comfortable with my decision.

Saffra · 25/06/2011 17:29

Oh, and I quite often have Becks Blue, which is pretty nice. Sometimes you want a 'grown up' tasting drink, rather than something sweet like J2O, which I've never been into.
